Efficacy of leprosy vaccines across the globe: A systematic review & meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Background & objectives Although multi-drug therapy has decreased the burden of disease, leprosy is yet to be eliminated. Accelerating progress requires optimal use of existing tools, advanced diagnostic tests, newer drugs, and vaccines. The search for a vaccine with therapeutic and preventive potential is ongoing, but evidence on effectiveness and safety is lacking. This systematic review and meta-analysis will evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy, immunogenicity, and safety of leprosy vaccines in humans. Methods In June 2024, three databases were systematically searched with updated se

A systematic review of thromboelastography utilization in vascular and endovascular surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Thromboelastography (TEG) is diagnostic modality that analyzes real-time blood coagulation parameters. Clinically, TEG primarily allows for directed blood component resuscitation among patients with acute blood loss and coagulopathy. The utilization of TEG has been widely adopted in among other surgical specialties; however, its use in vascular surgery is less prominent. We aimed to provide an up-to-date review of TEG utilization in vascular and endovascular surgery. METHODS: Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a literature

Recent updates in diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis with emphasis on nucleic acid amplification tests.

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal tuberculosis (TB) is a common epitome of extrapulmonary TB (EPTB), wherein peritoneal and intestinal TB are the most prevalent forms. Diagnosis of abdominal TB is a daunting challenge owing to variable anatomical locations, paucibacillary nature of specimens and atypical clinical presentations that mimic other abdominal diseases, such as Crohn's disease and malignancies. In this review, we made a comprehensive study on the diagnosis of abdominal TB. AREA COVERED: Various modalities employed for abdominal TB diagnosis include clinical features, imaging, bacteriological

Unilateral Laryngoscopic Findings Associated With Response to Gabapentin in Patients With Chronic Cough.

IMPORTANCE: Chronic cough is a debilitating, often multifactorial problem. Vagal neuropathy has been proposed as a cause for a fraction of these cases. There are certain features that support the clinical diagnosis of vagal neuropathy. It is hypothesized that patients with neurogenic cough who have vocal fold motion asymmetry (VFMA) on laryngoscopy will be more likely to respond to gabapentin. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between the history, physical and videostroboscopic examinations, and clinical response to gabapentin. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In a retrospective cohor

Interaction training for conversational partners of children with cerebral palsy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that children with cerebral palsy have difficulties acquiring communication skills and that conversation with familiar partners follows restricted patterns, which are characterized by high levels of partner control and children's responsivity. Speech and language therapy often includes training for conversational partners to help to them recognize children's communicative signals and to create opportunities for children to take a more equal and independent role in conversation. However, the effectiveness of this indirect therapy has not been demonstrated reliably

[Continual epidural therapy in lumbosciatic syndrome. Personal experience].

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the effects of associating several currently used drugs: local anesthetics, corticosteroids, morphine hydrochloride and clonidine administered using continual epidural in lumbosciatic back pain. The association of an opiate and a solution of local anesthetic through infusion increases the analgesic effect and allows smaller quantities of both drugs to be used. The addition of another drug, like clonidine, may allow the dose of the single drugs to be reduced even further, thus resulting in fewer dose-dependent side effects. We

'Don't say "fis" say "fish" ', 'I said "fis"': Ethical Considerations in Therapy to Change Child Speech.

BACKGROUND: Historically, assessment of child speech has focused on transcription and analysis of speech sound production with no exploration of the child's own perception of his or her speech. This article explores the possibility that whilst children with speech 'difficulties' may be aware that 'talking to people' is problematic, they may not be aware that the reason for their communication difficulty is that their speech is unclear. Similarly, in a therapy context, the child's own appreciation of the purpose and progress of therapy has not been explored. Given the current concern for child

Breathing carcinogens: PM2.5 air pollution and lung cancer in never-smokers, a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer in never-smokers (LCINS) disproportionately affects women and younger individuals, and its incidence has increased over recent decades. Environmental respiratory hazards, such as particulate matter ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5), are associated with lung cancer incidence and mortality, but the mechanisms by which PM2.5 increases lung cancer susceptibility remain incompletely understood. This review summarizes the current evidence linking PM2.5 exposure to LCINS and identifies priorities for future research. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE
