Optimizing Concussion Care Seeking: Using Machine Learning to Predict Delayed Concussion Reporting.

BACKGROUND: Early medical attention after concussion may minimize symptom duration and burden; however, many concussions are undiagnosed or have a delay in diagnosis after injury. Many concussion symptoms (eg, headache, dizziness) are not visible, meaning that early identification is often contingent on individuals reporting their injury to medical staff. A fundamental understanding of the types and levels of factors that explain when concussions are reported can help identify promising directions for intervention. PURPOSE: To identify individual and institutional factors that predict immedia

Deep learning application of vertebral compression fracture detection using mask R-CNN.

Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) of the thoracolumbar spine are commonly caused by osteoporosis or result from traumatic events. Early diagnosis of vertebral compression fractures can prevent further damage to patients. When assessing these fractures, plain radiographs are used as the primary diagnostic modality. In this study, we developed a deep learning based fracture detection model that could be used as a tool for primary care in the orthopedic department. We constructed a VCF dataset using 487 lateral radiographs, which included 598 fractures in the L1-T11 vertebra. For detecting V

Riemannian manifold-based disentangled representation learning for multi-site functional connectivity analysis.

Functional connectivity (FC), derived from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), has been widely used to characterize brain abnormalities in disorders. FC is usually defined as a correlation matrix that is a symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrix lying on the Riemannian manifold. Recently, a number of learning-based methods have been proposed for FC analysis, while the geometric properties of Riemannian manifold have not yet been fully explored in previous studies. Also, most existing methods are designed to target one imaging site of fMRI data, which may result in l

Novel machine learning approach toward classification model of HIV-1 integrase inhibitors.

HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus-1) has been causing severe pandemics by attacking the immune system of its host. Left untreated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), where death is inevitable due to opportunistic diseases. Therefore, discovering new antiviral drugs against HIV-1 is crucial. This study aimed to explore a novel machine learning approach to classify compounds that inhibit HIV-1 integrase and screen the dataset of repurposing compounds. The present study had two main stages: selecting the best type of fingerprint or molecular descriptor using the Wilcoxon

ECG Abnormality Detection Using MIMIC-IV-ECG Data Via Supervised Contrastive Learning.

Electrocardiogram data provide a tremendous opportunity for the detection of various types of cardiac arrhythmia. Recent advancement in ubiquitous wearable devices with incorporated ECG sensors offers an opportunity for a real-time monitoring system for detecting abnormalities in ECG data. Nevertheless, access to a comprehensive labeled dataset can be expensive and not feasible. As a result, there is a need for a pretraining framework with a minimal amount of labeled data that generates a morphology-aware embedding space. Contrastive learning is a commonly used approach for creating these regu

Verbal paired associates learning lateralizes left hippocampal sclerosis in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Left hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is associated with verbal-specific memory impairment. This association is well established for word list learning tasks, and there is some evidence that this may also be relevant to verbal paired associates learning (PAL), though the evidence is limited. We aimed to evaluate the utility of verbal PAL as a marker for left HS, compare this with word list learning, and derive cutoff scores to facilitate clinical application. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) and PAL scores obtained from 116 surgically naïve tem

Predicting executive functioning from walking features in Parkinson's disease using machine learning.

Parkinson's disease is characterized by motor and cognitive deficits. While previous work suggests a relationship between both, direct empirical evidence is scarce or inconclusive. Therefore, we examined the relationship between walking features and executive functioning in patients with Parkinson's disease using state-of-the-art machine learning approaches. A dataset of 103 geriatric Parkinson inpatients, who performed four walking conditions with varying difficulty levels depending on single task walking and additional motor and cognitive demands, was analyzed. Walking features were quantifi

m6ACali: machine learning-powered calibration for accurate m6A detection in MeRIP-Seq.

We present m6ACali, a novel machine-learning framework aimed at enhancing the accuracy of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) epitranscriptome profiling by reducing the impact of non-specific antibody enrichment in MeRIP-Seq. The calibration model serves as a genomic feature-based classifier that refines the identification of m6A sites, distinguishing those genuinely present from those that can be detected in in-vitro transcribed (IVT) control experiments. We find that m6ACali effectively identifies non-specific binding peaks reported by exomePeak2 and MACS2 in novel MeRIP-Seq datasets without the need f

Dorsal hippocampal astrocytes mediate the development of heroin withdrawal-enhanced fear learning.

There is a significant co-occurrence of opioid use disorder (OUD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in clinical populations. However, the neurobiological mechanisms linking chronic opioid use, withdrawal, and the development of PTSD are poorly understood. Our previous research has shown that proinflammatory cytokines, expressed primarily by astrocytes in the dorsal hippocampus (DH), play a role in the development of heroin withdrawal-enhanced fear learning (HW-EFL), an animal model of PTSD-OUD comorbidity. Given the role of astrocytes in memory, fear learning, and opioid use, our exper
