IL-17A[G197G]-Association between NOx and gestational age in a South African birth cohort.

Interleukin (IL-)17A, plays a role in pathogenic defence, but is implicated in chronic inflammatory diseases, and has recently been associated with variable pregnancy outcomes. We investigated the role of maternal IL-17-[G197A]-specific effects of third-trimester IL-17 mRNA expression, NOx exposure levels and other variables on gestational age, in the Mother and Child in the Environment (MACE) birth cohort in South Africa. A total of 327 participants were genotyped for IL-17-[G197A] by polymerase chain reaction restriction-fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Quantitative real-time PCR was

Emission Standards, Public Transit, and Infant Health.

Transit buses are an integral part of urban life. They reduce externalities generated from private vehicles and increase geographic mobility. However, unlike most private vehicles in the United States, they use diesel fuel and emit higher amounts of toxic pollutants. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency set emission standards for transit buses starting in 1988 that have been continually updated, but their public health and economic impacts are unclear due to scarce emissions data. I construct a novel panel dataset for the New York City (NYC) Transit bus fleet between 1990 and 2009 and exam

PTSD SYMPTOMS ACROSS PREGNANCY AND EARLY POSTPARTUM AMONG WOMEN WITH LIFETIME PTSD DIAGNOSIS.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about trajectories of PTSD symptoms across the peripartum period in women with trauma histories, specifically those who met lifetime PTSD diagnoses prior to pregnancy. The present study seeks to identify factors that influence PTSD symptom load across pregnancy and early postpartum, and study its impact on postpartum adaptation. METHOD: The current study is a secondary analysis on pregnant women with a Lifetime PTSD diagnosis (N = 319) derived from a larger community sample who were interviewed twice across pregnancy (28 and 35 weeks) and again at 6 weeks postpartu

Missouri Mothers and Their Children: A Family Study of the Effects of Genetics and the Prenatal Environment.

The Missouri Mothers and Their Children Study (MO-MATCH) was specifically designed to critically investigate prenatal environmental influences on child attention problems and associated learning and cognitive deficits. The project began as a pilot study in 2004 and was formally launched in 2008. Participants in the study were initially identified via the Department of Vital Statistics birth record (BR) database. Interview and lab-based data were obtained from: (1) mothers of Missouri-born children (born 1998-2005), who smoked during one pregnancy but not during another pregnancy; (2) biologica

Forceps birth delivery, allergic sensitisation and asthma: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Studies indicate an increased risk of allergies among children born by caesarean section, possibly because immune development is altered by avoiding exposure to maternal vaginal flora. It is unknown if other obstetric interventions are associated with allergies. OBJECTIVE: To assess associations between delivery with forceps assistance and development of atopy and asthma. METHODS: In a population-based cohort of 1037 individuals born in 1972/73, atopy was assessed by skin-prick tests for common allergens at ages 13 and 32 years. A history of asthma was obtained at the same ages.

Maternal treatment with picrotoxin in late pregnancy improved female sexual behavior but did not alter male sexual behavior of offspring.

Previous studies from our laboratory investigated the effects of picrotoxin (PT), a γ-aminobutyric acid receptor antagonist administered during several perinatal periods, on the sexual behavior of male and female rats. We observed that the time of perinatal exposure to PT is critical to determine either facilitation or impairment of sexual behavior. The present study evaluated the effects of prenatal administration of a single dose of PT on gestation day 18 of dams (the first critical period of male brain sexual differentiation) on sexual behavior of male and female offspring. Thus, female Wis

Nicotine replacement therapy during pregnancy and infantile colic in the offspring.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations between use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and smoking during pregnancy and infantile colic in the offspring. METHODS: We used data from maternal interviews (from pregnancy and at 6 months post partum) from the Danish National Birth Cohort (1996-2002). We included 63 128 live-born singletons with complete information on nicotine exposure during pregnancy and infantile colic symptoms as recorded at 6 months of age. RESULTS: A total of 46 660 infants (73.9%) were unexposed to nicotine during pregnancy; 207 (0.3%) were exposed to NRT, 15 016 (23

Antenatal maternal stress alters functional brain responses in adult offspring during conditioned fear.

Antenatal maternal stress has been shown in rodent models and in humans to result in altered behavioral and neuroendocrine responses, yet little is known about its effects on functional brain activation. Pregnant female rats received a daily foot-shock stress or sham-stress two days after testing plug-positive and continuing for the duration of their pregnancy. Adult male offspring (age 14 weeks) with and without prior maternal stress (MS) were exposed to an auditory fear conditioning (CF) paradigm. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was assessed during recall of the tone cue in the nonsedated, nonteth

Household chemicals, persistent wheezing and lung function: effect modification by atopy?

The aims of the present study were to assess the effects of maternal use of domestic chemicals during pregnancy on wheezing and lung function in children aged </=8.5 yrs and to explore the potential modifying effect of atopy. In the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a cohort study, a maternal composite household chemical exposure (CHCE) score was derived. Wheezing phenotypes from birth to age 7 yrs were assigned on the basis of reported wheeze. Lung function (forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV(1)), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced midexpiratory flow between 25 and 75

Lung responses to ultrasound-guided fetal treatments with corticosteroids in preterm lambs.

Maternal corticosteroid treatments augment lung function in the human preterm infant. However, not all fetuses respond, the response requires > or = 48 h of exposure, and multiple maternal doses expose the mother to potential risks. To evaluate the potential of direct fetal therapy, we used ultrasound to direct fetal intramuscular or intravascular injections of corticosteroids or saline in sheep and subsequently delivered the preterm lambs at 128 days gestational age to assess postnatal lung function. Relative to saline-injected controls, 0.5 or 2 mg/kg betamethasone given as a single intramus

Gestational and familial risk factors for childhood astrocytoma: results of a case-control study.

Gestational and familial risk factors were investigated for their association with astrocytoma, the most frequently occurring brain tumor in children. A case-control study of 163 matched pairs was performed. Cases under 15 years of age at diagnosis in 1980-1986 were identified through the tumor registries of 8 hospitals in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Controls were selected by random digit dialing and were matched to cases for age, race, and telephone area code and exchange. Maternal antinausea medications increased the risk of childhood astrocytoma [OR (odds ratio) = 2.0, P = 0.04]

Neurological repercussions of neonatal nicotine exposure: A review.

Smoking during pregnancy is hazardous to both the mother and the foetus, according to a substantial amount of recorded data. Exposure to nicotine and other compounds in cigarette smoke increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by two to five times during pregnancy. Serotonergic abnormalities have been discovered in SIDS infants in the zone of the medulla oblongata, which is known to control cardio-respiratory function. SIDS establishes a connection between depression, learning difficulties and behavioural disorders. Prenatal nicotine intake during the second trimester affects t

Bayesian inference of nonylphenol exposure for assessing human dietary risk.

Nonylphenols (NPs) are endocrine-disrupting compounds commonly found in the environment and a number of food products. In this study, we constructed a probabilistic risk framework incorporating a Bayesian inference of exposure level in foodstuffs in conjunction with effect analysis of reproduction and renal disease. Our objective was to contrast the risk of dietary exposure to NPs among individuals in various age groups, with a particular focus on fertile females. In this study, seafood presented relatively high NP concentrations; however, seafood accounts for only a small proportion of the to

Infants of Mothers with Cocaine Use: Review of Clinical and Medico-Legal Aspects.

Illicit drug use is a global problem that also affects pregnant women. Substance use and alcohol abuse during pregnancy may have various harmful consequences for both mothers and foetuses. Intrauterine exposure to illicit substances can be investigated through maternal reports and toxicological tests on mothers' and/or newborns' samples. While the negative effects of alcohol and opioid use on pregnancy, the foetus, and/or newborn are well established, the effects of cocaine use remain controversial. We performed a review of the literature to evaluate the current state of knowledge of the effec

Transgenerational tobacco smoke exposure and childhood cancer: an observational study.

AIM: Although tobacco smoke is an established risk factor for adult cancer, studies of the association between parental smoking and childhood cancer have produced inconsistent results. To investigate the transgenerational relationship between pre-natal and post-natal tobacco smoke exposure from the grandmother's pregnancies until after the post-natal period and childhood cancer. METHODS: Exposure to tobacco smoke was recorded for three generations. Data were collected through personal interviews using the paediatric environmental history, and were compared among 128 children with cancer and 1

Violence exposure and the association between young African American mothers' discipline and child problem behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Children of adolescent mothers are at increased risk of violence exposure and behavior problems, which have been linked to mothers' disciplinary practices. This study examines how the effect of young African American mothers' discipline on their preschool-age children's externalizing and internalizing behavior varies by mother and child violence exposure. METHODS: A sample of 230 African American mothers who gave birth as adolescents and their 3- to 6-year-old children were recruited from community-based day care and primary health care sites in the Washington, DC, metropolitan reg

Radiation procedures performed on U.S. women during pregnancy: findings from two 1980 surveys.

The 1980 National Natality Survey (NNS) and 1980 National Fetal Mortality Survey (NFMS) provide a unique opportunity to examine variation in exposure to radiation during pregnancy for mothers of live-born and stillborn infants. Maternal race, age, education, and marital status in both surveys and low birth weight in the 1980 NNS are characteristics used to examine exposure rates for X-ray, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, shortwave, and microwave radiation examinations and treatments. About 15 percent of mothers of live infants and 23 percent of mothers who experienced stillbirths (fetal deaths o
