Association of volatile organic compounds co-exposure with bone health indicators and potential mediators.

Limited evidence was found in the associations of volatile organic compound (VOC) exposure with bone health indicators. This study aimed to explore the associations of individual and combined metabolites of VOCs (mVOCs) in urine, a representative of the internal exposure level of VOCs, with bone mineral density (BMD), osteoporosis (OP) and fracture, and potential mediators. Data of the National Health Examination and Nutrition Survey 2005-2006 and 2013-2014 was used. Multiple linear and logistic regression modeling were performed to analyze the associations of individual mVOC with bone health

The immune factors have complex causal regulation effects on bone mineral density.

Recent evidence has gradually recognized that the immune and skeletal systems are two closely correlated systems, but the specific immune factors on bone mineral density (BMD) are largely unknown. Based on the summary-level data of genome-wide association studies (GWASs), we performed a series of analyses including two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to test potential causal links between 731 immune traits [including median fluorescence intensities (MFIs), absolute cell (AC) counts, relative cell (RC) counts, and morphological parameters (MP)] and BMD. After false discovery rate (

Rhythm Perception, Speaking Rate Entrainment, and Conversational Quality: A Mediated Model.

PURPOSE: Acoustic-prosodic entrainment, defined as the tendency for individuals to modify their speech behaviors to more closely align with the behaviors of their conversation partner, plays an important role in successful interaction. From a mechanistic perspective, acoustic-prosodic entrainment is, by its very nature, a rhythmic activity. Accordingly, it is highly plausible that an individual's rhythm perception abilities play a role in their ability to successfully entrain. Here, we examine the impact of rhythm perception in speaking rate entrainment and subsequent conversational quality.

The relevancy of massive health education in the Brazilian prison system: The course "health care for people deprived of freedom" and its impacts.

INTRODUCTION: Brazil has one of the largest prison populations globally, with over 682,000 imprisoned people. Prison health is a public health emergency as it presents increasingly aggravating disease rates, mainly sexually transmitted infections (STI). And this problem already affects both developed and developing nations. Therefore, when thinking about intervention strategies to improve this scenario in Brazil, the course "Health Care for People Deprived of Freedom" (ASPPL), aimed at prison health, was developed. This course was implemented in the Virtual Learning Environment of the Brazilia

cPLA2 activation contributes to lysosomal defects leading to impairment of autophagy after spinal cord injury.

The autophagy-lysosomal pathway plays an essential role in cellular homeostasis as well as a protective function against a variety of diseases including neurodegeneration. Conversely, inhibition of autophagy, for example due to lysosomal dysfunction, can lead to pathological accumulation of dysfunctional autophagosomes and consequent neuronal cell death. We previously reported that autophagy is inhibited and contributes to neuronal cell death following spinal cord injury (SCI). In this study, we examined lysosomal function and explored the mechanism of lysosomal defects following SCI. Our data

Chronic conditions as predictors of later life disability employment exit: a gendered analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Increasing life expectancy has led governments to implement reforms aimed at delaying retirement. Chronic conditions are an important barrier to this given their association with pain, functional limitations, depression and ultimately lower life expectancy. Chronic diseases are gendered in terms of these characteristics, as well as their population prevalence. I examined the extent to which gender moderates the extent to which different chronic conditions lead to disability employment exit, the proportion of exits they account for and key mediators in this process. METHODS: Data f

Burns During Pregnancy: Implications for Maternal-Perinatal Providers and Guidelines for Practice.

IMPORTANCE: When a major burn is suffered during pregnancy, the obstetric provider is challenged to respond on an evidence basis because personal experience usually is lacking. Currently, there is a paucity of publications to inform the obstetrician, guide practice, and impact early critical decision making. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to summarize the available information on early management of burns during pregnancy and to identify components of best practices for optimal outcome. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The PubMed database was searched for relevant titles and abstracts involving

The relationship between sensory sensitivity, food fussiness and food preferences in children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Heightened sensitivity to sensory information has been associated with food fussiness in both atypical and typical development. Despite food fussiness and sensory dysfunction being reported as common concerns for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, the relationship that exists between them, and whether they differ between disorders, has yet to be established. The current study aimed to examine sensory sensitivity as a predictor of food fussiness in three different neurodevelopmental disorders, whilst controlling for comorbidity amongst these disorders. Ninety-eight caregivers of childr

Relation between Arterial Stiffness and Markers of Inflammation and Hemostasis - Data from the Population-based Gutenberg Health Study.

The relation between inflammation, hemostasis and arterial stiffness is of pathophysiological relevance for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Data investigating this interplay using stiffness index (SI) by digital photoplethysmography are not available yet. Therefore, sex-specific relation between SI and inflammatory and hemostatic biomarkers was investigated within 13,724 subjects from the population-based Gutenberg Health Study. C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell count (WBCC), neopterin, interleukin-18, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA), fibrinogen and hematoc

Effect of vitamin B12 and folic acid supplementation on biomarkers of endothelial function and inflammation among elderly individuals with hyperhomocysteinemia.

B-vitamin trials failed to demonstrate beneficial effects on cardiovascular outcomes, but hyperhomocysteinemia still stands out as an independent cardiovascular risk factor, particularly in elderly individuals. B-vitamins may influence early vascular dysfunction, such as endothelial dysfunction, or may have adverse effects, for example on inflammation. We investigated the effect of B-vitamins on endothelial function and inflammation within an interventional study. This study was conducted within the framework of the B-PROOF trial, which included 2919 hyperhomocysteinemic elderly individuals, w

Reducing the impact of influenza-associated secondary pneumococcal infections.

When administered prophylactically, we show that the Toll-like receptor-2 (TLR-2) agonist PEG-Pam2Cys (pegylated-S-(2,3-bis(palmitoyloxy)propyl)cysteine) not only mediates potent anti-viral activity against influenza virus but also reduces the impact of secondary infections with Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) by reducing (i) pulmonary viral and bacterial burdens, (ii) the levels of proinflammatory cytokines that normally accompany influenza and S. pneumoniae secondary infections and (iii) the vascular permeability of the pulmonary tract that can allow bacterial invasion of the blo

Effects of intravascular volume replacement on lung and kidney function and damage in nonseptic experimental lung injury.

BACKGROUND: Intravascular volume replacement is often required in the presence of increased pulmonary capillary leakage, for example in patients with volutrauma with major hemorrhage. In the present study, the effects of Ringer's acetate (RA), gelatin-polysuccinate (GEL), and a modern hydroxyethyl starch (HES, 6% 130/0.42) on lung and kidney function and damage were compared in a two-hit model of acute lung injury. The authors hypothesized that GEL and HES, compared to RA: (1) reduced lung histological damage, (2) impaired kidney morphology and function. METHODS: Acute lung injury was induced

Is fatty acid intake a predictor of arterial stiffness and blood pressure in men? Evidence from the Caerphilly Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Arterial stiffness is an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and all-cause mortality and may be differentially affected by dietary fatty acid (FA) intake. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between FA consumption and arterial stiffness and blood pressure in a community-based population. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Caerphilly Prospective Study recruited 2398 men, aged 45-59 years, who were followed up at 5-year intervals for a mean of 17.8-years (n 787). A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire estimated intakes of total

Association of IRF5 polymorphisms with susceptibility to hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in children.

INTRODUCTION: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a hyperinflammatory syndrome and has a varied genetic background. The polymorphism of interferon regulatory factor 5 gene (IRF5) was reported to be associated with susceptibility to macrophage activation syndrome. IRF5 acts as a master transcription factor in the activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. We assessed associations of IRF5 gene polymorphisms with susceptibility to secondary HLH. METHODS: Three IRF5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs729302, rs2004640, and rs2280714) were genotyped using TaqMan assays in 82 secondary HLH p

The contact allergen nickel triggers a unique inflammatory and proangiogenic gene expression pattern via activation of NF-kappaB and hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha.

Nickel compounds are prime inducers of contact allergy reactions in humans. To identify the signal transduction pathways mediating the cellular responses to nickel and to elucidate their hierarchy, we performed Affymetrix gene profiling using human primary endothelial cells, which strongly respond to nickel stimulation. Overall, we found 258 significantly modulated transcripts, comprising 140 up-regulated and 118 down-regulated genes. The bulk of those genes were identified as targets of two distinct signaling cascades, the IKK2/NF-kappaB pathway and a proangiogenic pathway mediated by HIF-1al

Endothelial mediators and association with chronic graft-versus-host disease in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a retrospective single-center study.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a potentially curative treatment for hematological malignancies. However, it is often complicated by chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD), a leading cause of late non-relapse morbidity and mortality. Early identification of patients at risk is therefore critical, yet reliable biomarkers are still lacking. In this study, we evaluated serum endothelial mediator profiles collected 1 year after allo-HSCT and their association with subsequent cGVHD development. Serum samples taken 1 year post-transplant from 82 transplanted pati

Immune cells mediated the causal relationship between gut microbiota and carpal tunnel syndrome: A Mendelian randomization study.

Studies have shown that carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is associated with inflammation and immunity. Additionally, recent research indicates that the gut microbiota can influence the development and progression of immune and inflammatory responses. We aim to investigate the causal impact of gut microbiota on CTS and identify potential immune cell mediators. We made use of the summary statistics of 412 gut microbiota (from 7738 individuals), 731 immune cells (from 3757 individuals), and CTS (FinnGen consortium), from the extensive genome-wide association studies to date. To determine the causal l

Transcriptomic signatures of classical monocytes reveal pro-inflammatory modules and heterogeneity in polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA) is a childhood-onset autoimmune disease. Immune cells contribute to persistent inflammation observed in pJIA. Despite the crucial role of monocytes in arthritis, the precise involvement of classical monocytes in the pathogenesis of pJIA remains uncertain. Here, we aimed to uncover the transcriptomic patterns of classical monocytes in pJIA, focusing on their involvement in disease mechanism and heterogeneity. METHODS: A total of 17 healthy subjects and 18 premenopausal women with pJIA according to ILAR criteria were included. Cla

Childhood maltreatment and substance use risk: A moderated mediation model of autonomic reactivity and distress tolerance.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The link between child maltreatment (CM) and substance use (SU) in young adulthood is established. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) division of the autonomic nervous system may mediate this link. However, less is known on the indirect link between CM and SU via SNS functioning. Due to individual variability in the link between SNS functioning and SU risk, we aimed to examine the moderating role of distress tolerance (DT). METHODS: A longitudinal sample of 118 young adults (YAs) from a low socioeconomic status background were assessed twice (between 9 and 12 months apart).
