Prefrontal cortical network connections: key site of vulnerability in stress and schizophrenia.

The symptoms of schizophrenia involve profound dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). PFC networks create our "mental sketch pad", and PFC dysfunction contributes to symptoms such as cognitive deficits, thought disorder, delusions and hallucinations. Neuropathological studies of schizophrenia have shown marked loss of dendritic spines in deep layer III, the sublayer where PFC microcircuits reside. The microcircuits consist of recurrent excitatory pyramidal cell networks that interconnect on spines, and excite each other via NMDA receptor signaling. The pyramidal cell persistent firing is

Self-other relations in social development and autism: multiple roles for mirror neurons and other brain bases.

Mirror neuron system dysfunction may underlie a self-other matching impairment, which has previously been suggested to account for autism. Embodied Cognition Theory, which proposes that action provides a foundation for cognition has lent further credence to these ideas. The hypotheses of a self-other matching deficit and impaired mirror neuron function in autism have now been well supported by studies employing a range of methodologies. However, underlying mechanisms require further exploration to explain how mirror neurons may be involved in attentional and mentalizing processes. Impairments

Neuroimaging and pain: a window on the autonomic nervous system.

Pain is one of the most common experiences of humans. Neuroimaging techniques can visualize the main brain areas involved in pain modulation, the pain matrix. It is noteworthy that many of the brain areas forming the pain matrix are also involved in modulating autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity that in turn plays a major role in determining the best adaptive response to the pain experience. The tight connection between the pain system and ANS is also evident from neuroanatomical studies indicating that the lamina 1 neurons receive both painful and visceral stimuli from all visceral organs

Effects of motor imagery on motor cortical output topography in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: The motor impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD) could partly reflect a failure to activate processes of motor imagery. OBJECTIVE: To verify any selective changes of motor output during motor imagery, lateralized to the hemisphere contralateral to the clinically affected side of hemiparkinsonian patients. METHODS: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to map the cortical representations of the contralateral abductor digiti minimi muscle (ADM) during rest, contraction, and motor imagery in a group of patients with hemi-PD and in a group of healthy volunteers. Seven pati

Spatial performance of unilateral vestibular defective patients in nonvisual versus visual navigation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of unilateral vestibular neurotomy on humans ability to perform navigation tasks. These tasks provided self-motion feedback by way of either locomotor activity only (nonvisual navigation or "locomotor task") or visual motion cues only (visually simulated navigation or "visual task"). After exploration of an environment in which 4 locations were marked by different objects, subjects attempted to navigate to those locations either by reproducing the same paths as those followed during exploration, by reversing routes, or by making spatial

Oral care for the homebound and institutionalized.

Most patients who are homebound or in LTC facilities have multiple health problems that require the cooperation of many different types of providers. Dentists have a specific role in this process because they can improve the quality of life for the elderly by keeping them free of oral infection, restoring their dentition so they can enjoy eating, and restoring facial esthetics. It should be apparent that dental care for these patients is a complicated process. There are many considerations in prescribing the type of treatment needed by each patient. These include the patient's life span, medic

Hormonal influences in developmental learning disabilities.

Developmental language and learning disabilities in children can take many different forms and can result from a variety of causes. Research to date has focused primarily on specific disabilities in learning, which are characterized by a significant delay or disorder in one aspect of learning against a background of otherwise normal development. Learning disabilities affecting language and/or reading acquisition (developmental dysphasia and dyslexia) have been studied most thoroughly. Verbal learning disabilities occur more frequently in boys than in girls, and there is a higher than expected

Neuropeptides in human memory and learning processes.

The neuropeptides vasopressin, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), and beta-endorphin seem to have important effects on memory and learning. Animal studies attempting to demonstrate these effects are difficult to interpret because of the complexity of behavior that is described as "learning" and the impossibility of assessing verbal learning in animals. This article therefore reviews some of the animal literature on neuropeptides and learning, but focuses primarily upon studies in humans, both in normal volunteers and in patients with neurological disorders. Vasopressin enhances learning under some co

Clinical and cost-effectiveness of parenting intervention for mothers experiencing psychosocial stress: insights from the early closure of the Mellow Babies RCT.

BACKGROUND: Problems in children's early social and emotional development are likely to have major long-term consequences for the individual and society: maternal emotional well-being is associated with better outcomes. Interventions designed to improve both maternal mental health and the mother-child relationship are thus likely to benefit both maternal health and child development. OBJECTIVES: To establish the clinical and cost-effectiveness of the Mellow Babies parenting intervention for women experiencing psychosocial stress and their 6- to 18-month-old babies. Family Physicians' Perspectives on Providing Living Kidney Donor Care.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Living kidney donors (LKDs) perceive gaps in care along their donation journeys, such as poor coordination and communication between providers. Better integration of their primary care providers (PCPs) in their donation journey can help address these gaps. We captured the perspectives of Canadian PCPs to understand the challenges they perceive when caring for LKDs and their recommendations to address them. STUDY DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive design. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Semistructured in-depth interviews with 19 family physicians conducted until data saturation.

The Heart´s rhythm 'n' blues: Sex differences in circadian variation patterns of vagal activity vary by depressive symptoms in predominantly healthy employees.

INTRODUCTION: Successful regulation of emotional states is positively associated to mental health, while difficulties in regulating emotions are negatively associated to overall mental health and in particular associated with anxiety or depression symptoms. A key structure associated to socio-emotional regulatory processes is the central autonomic network. Activity in this structure is associated to vagal activity can be indexed noninvasively and simply by measures of peripheral cardiac autonomic modulations such as heart rate variability. Vagal activity exhibits a circadian variation pattern,

Age at onset and pattern of neuropsychological impairment in mild early-stage Alzheimer disease. A study of a community-based population.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of age at onset on neuropsychological functioning in a group of patients with probable Alzheimer disease (AD) and, within this group, to scrutinize further those patients with mild early-onset disease as it was hypothesized that within this group specific patterns of cognitive impairment could be identified that correlated with neuropathological staging of the disease. DESIGN: Each patient underwent an extensive neuropsychological test battery to examine a wide range of cognitive processes to provide information to identify subtypes of dementia. SETTING: Th

Porcine cardiac blood - Salvia miltiorrhiza root alleviates cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury by inhibiting oxidative stress induced apoptosis through PI3K/AKT/Bcl-2/Bax signaling pathway.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. mixed with porcine cardiac blood (PCB-DS) is mainly employed for the treatment of brain ischemia-induced mental disturbances, palpitations and phlegm confusion based on the traditional principle of Menghe medical sect. PCB is the guide to DS and enhances the effect of DS. However, the potential mechanism of PCB-DS preventing cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CIRI) from the perspective of oxidative stress induced cell apoptosis remains unknown. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the pharmacological activity and molecular mechanism of P

Accelerated Epigenetic and Inflammatory Aging and Intrinsic Capacity.

IMPORTANCE: Extending the health span requires shifting from disease-centered to preventive, function-oriented medicine. To support healthy longevity, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed intrinsic capacity (IC), a composite of physical and mental capacities an individual can mobilize; however, molecular drivers of age-related IC decline remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To investigate cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of accelerated epigenetic and inflammatory aging with global IC and, secondarily, to examine domain-specific IC, sex differences, and interactions betwe

State of Ohio Adversity and Resilience (SOAR) study protocol: a comprehensive, multimodal, family-based, longitudinal observational investigation of risk and resilience in mental health and substance use disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Deaths related to drug overdose and suicide in the USA have increased 500% and 35%, respectively, over the last two decades. The human and economic costs to society associated with these 'deaths of despair' are immense. Great efforts and substantial investments have been made in treatment and prevention, yet these efforts have not abated these increasing trajectories of deaths over time. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated and highlighted these problems. Notably, some geographical areas (eg, Appalachia, farmland) and some communities (eg, low-income persons, 'essential workers'

Group antenatal care positively transforms the care experience: Results of an effectiveness trial in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: We developed and tested a Centering-based group antenatal (ANC) model in Malawi, integrating health promotion for HIV prevention and mental health. We present effectiveness data and examine congruence with only the Group ANC theory of change model, which identifies key processes as supportive relationships, empowered partners in learning and care, and meaningful services, leading to better ANC experiences and outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial at seven clinics in Blantyre District, Malawi, comparing outcomes for 1887 pregnant women randomly

[The so-called body-mind problem].

THE PROBLEM: Even psychosomatic researchers seem to want to avoid the so-called body-mind problem, which is actually a mind-brain problem. In line with Beckermann (2008), the first the four possible positions on the mind-brain problem are presented. The debate over the past 100 years has revolved around the question of whether mental events are ontologically independent of brain physiology or whether they are in fact entirely determined by it. Such a physicalism approach based on properties (i.e., mental characteristics or phenomena are physical or can be completely reduced to physical charact

Chronobiology in 1975.

UNLABELLED: A spectrum of rhythms with several frequencies importantly characterizes not only the central nervous system but also the neuroendocrines and endocrines, other structures and organs, beyond the level of the cell to subcellular structures; it has a wide bearing since chronobiologic methods and facts relate to both basic research and its bearing on major problems of our day. Perhaps most important, computer analysis of data series allows study of temporal structure, progressive and rhythmic variations in life processes and in their responses to environment and drugs. By such methods
