Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and risk for psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders in siblings.

BACKGROUND: Probands with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk for several psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. The risk of these disorders among the siblings of probands has not been thoroughly assessed in a population-based cohort. METHODS: Every child born in Finland in 1991-2005 and diagnosed with ADHD in 1995-2011 were identified from national registers. Each case was matched with four controls on sex, place, and date of birth. The full siblings of the cases and controls were born in 1981-2007 and diagnosed in 1981-2013. In total, 7369 cases with

Imaging and Genetic Approaches to Inform Biomarkers for Anxiety Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders, and PSTD.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problem in the world and also claim the highest health care cost among various neuropsychiatric disorders. Anxiety disorders have a chronic and recurrent course and cause significantly negative impacts on patients' social, personal, and occupational functioning as well as quality of life. Despite their high prevalence rates, anxiety disorders have often been under-diagnosed or misdiagnosed, and consequently under-treated. Even with the correct diagnosis, anxiety disorders are known to be difficult to treat successfully. In order to implement

[PSYCHODERMATOLOGY].

Psychodermatologic disorders are conditions involving an interaction between the mind and the skin. Correlation between psychiatric and dermatological disorders is a highly complex relation considering etiology, diagnostic procedures and treatment. There are three major groups of psychodermatological disorders: psychosomatic (psychophysiologic) disorders, primary psychiatric disorders and secondary psychiatric disorders. Psychosomatic disorders are dermatological diseases which can be exacerbated or worsened by emotional stress, but are not caused directly by stress. Emotional stress can exace

Meta-analysis of the relations of anxiety sensitivity to the depressive and anxiety disorders.

There is a substantial literature relating the personality trait anxiety sensitivity (AS; tendency to fear anxiety-related sensations) and its lower order dimensions to the mood and anxiety (i.e., internalizing) disorders. However, particularly given the disorders' high comorbidity rates, it remains unclear whether AS is broadly related to these disorders or if it shows a pattern of differential relations. Meta-analyses of the concurrent relations of AS with the internalizing disorders were conducted based on 117 studies and 792 effect sizes. Mean Anxiety Sensitivity Index scores by diagnostic

The Role of the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis in Perinatal Depression: Novel Insights for Treatment.

Perinatal depression, a prevalent mood disorder complicating pregnancy and childbirth, poses significant threats to maternal health and neonatal development. While psychotherapy and antidepressants constitute current standard treatments, their clinical application faces substantial limitations during pregnancy and lactation, including safety concerns, treatment resistance, and poor adherence rates. These therapeutic constraints have spurred growing interest in novel gut-brain axis (GBA)-targeted interventions. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota communicates with the brain throu

Successful treatment for serious depression with suicidal risk in a heart transplant patient.

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder is related to unfavourable outcomes in patients with severe comorbidities. In transplant patients, major depression is associated with worse clinical outcomes. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 55-year-old man with a heart transplant due to heart failure of ischaemic origin. Six months after the transplant he developed depressed mood, anhedonia and suicidal ideation with a score of 20/27 on the PHQ-9 depression screening scale. After receiving mirtazapine 30 mg/night for a week and persisting with a high suicide risk, it was decided to administer ke

[Briquet syndrome in patients with fibromyalgia].

Fibromyalgia is a disorder of the pain perception, which may, but need not be associated with depression. Modern science does not allow to put an equal sign between the two diseases. However, at least in some people, can be seen as a variant of depression, fibromyalgia. Studies indicate that 50-80 per cent, people with fibromyalgia can recognize depression. The article discusses the current state of knowledge on the role of physical activity, psychosomatic health treatments, physical therapy, relaxation techniques and education for patients with fibromyalgia. The best results, combine differen

Improvements in symptoms following neuronavigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in severe and enduring anorexia nervosa: findings from two case studies.

BACKGROUND: Advances in the treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN) are most likely to arise from targeted, brain-directed treatments, such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). We describe findings from two individuals with treatment-resistant AN who received 19-20 sessions of neuronavigated, high frequency rTMS, applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. METHOD: Within-session measures assessed changes pre-rTMS, post-rTMS in subjective eating disorder (ED) experiences. Weight, ED symptoms and mood were assessed pre-treatment, post-treatment and at 1 month follow-up. R

Interleukin-1β is associated with depressive episode in major depression but not in bipolar disorder.

Our work was sought to investigate possible changes in peripheral levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) according to the diagnosis of major depression (MD) and bipolar disorder (BD) and in different mood episodes. This is a cross-sectional nested in a population-based study comparing 240 young adults (80 controls, 80 MD and 80 BD), balanced for age and gender. Serum levels of IL-1β were significantly higher in MD when compared to control or BD subjects. In addition, when divided by current mood episode, MD subjects in current depression presented higher IL-1β levels than controls. No differences in

Primitive reflexes in cerebrovascular disease: a community study of older people with stroke and carotid stenosis.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of primitive reflexes (frontal release signs) in elderly community residents with cerebrovascular disease and to examine their relationship with neuropsychological and mood-related variables. METHODS: Three groups of 25 people over 65 with anterior circulation stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and a control group were assessed using measures of generalized cognitive impairment, frontal lobe dysfunction, frontal release signs and mood-related variables. Predictors of cerebrovascular disease were examined further in stroke and TIA groups. RESULTS:

Correlations between life course trauma on perinatal outcomes of women on community supervision - a retrospective cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Women on probation (community supervision) report high rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and ongoing trauma, yet little research has examined how trauma across the life course relates to perinatal outcomes during community supervision. This study examined associations between lifetime trauma and perinatal violence, infant separation, and postpartum mood symptoms among women who experienced pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum while on probation. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional secondary analysis from N = 60 women in South-Central Texas who had a pregnancy with

The Chinese version of the immediate mood scaler (IMS): a study evaluating its validity, reliability, and responsiveness in patients with MDD in China.

BACKGROUND: It is important to timely capture the fluctuation of the symptoms related to major depressive disorder (MDD). However, most conventionally used assessment tools for MDD symptoms are not designed for real-time assessment. The Immediate Mood Scaler (IMS) is suitable for the real-time evaluation of the mood of patients with MDD. METHODS: The original IMS was translated into Chinese and back-translated. At baseline, data from 368 patients with MDD, including demographic information and scores on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and IM

Vicarious heterosexism-based stress induces alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis craving and negative affect among sexual minority young adults: An experimental study.

PURPOSE: Sexual minority young adults are at increased risk for hazardous drinking and alcohol use disorder compared to heterosexual adults. Heterosexism-based stressors contribute and often explain inequities in alcohol outcomes. However, the extant research primarily relies on correlational designs, and often neglects the importance of alcohol craving, despite its foundational role in addiction. Leveraging a novel experimental mood induction paradigm, this study examined the effects of exposure to vicarious heterosexism-based stress on alcohol craving and negative affect among sexual minorit

Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled long-term maintenance study of aripiprazole in children with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates the long-term efficacy of aripiprazole compared to placebo in children with bipolar disorders. METHOD: Outpatients aged 4 to 9 years meeting DSM-IV criteria for a bipolar disorder (I, II, not otherwise specified, cyclothymia) were eligible to receive up to 16 weeks of open-label treatment with aripiprazole (phase 1). Patients were randomized into the 72-week double-blind phase of the study once they met a priori response criteria for stabilization (phase 2). During phase 2, patients either remained on their current aripiprazole regimen or began a double-blind

Infections, Inflammation, and Psychiatric Illness: Review of Postmortem Evidence.

While there is an abundance of epidemiological evidence implicating infectious agents in the etiology of severe mental illnesses, postmortem studies have not yet detected an increased incidence of microbial nucleic acid or proteins in the brains of people with mental illness. Nevertheless, abnormally expressed immune and inflammatory markers have consistently been found in the postmortem brain of patients with schizophrenia and mood disorders. Some of these abnormalities may be the result of an infection in utero or early in life that not only impacted the developing immune system but also the

Psychological and Psychiatric Comorbidities in Youth with Serious Physical Illness.

An estimated one in six children in the United States suffers from a mental disorder, including mood, anxiety, or behavioral disorders. This rate is even higher in children with chronic medical illness. This manuscript provides a concise review of the symptoms that comprise mental conditions often observed in children with chronic illness or at the end of life. It further provides some guidance to help clinicians distinguish normative from pathological presentations. Evidence-based psychotherapy interventions, potentially applicable to the acute inpatient setting, are briefly summarized. Broad

Atomoxetine Reduced Binge/Purge Symptoms in a Case of Anorexia Nervosa Binge/Purge Type.

Psychopharmacologic treatments for eating disorders (EDs) remain unclear, particularly for anorexia nervosa. As in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, a dopaminergic mechanism has been implicated in EDs, prompting our use of atomoxetine in an 18-year-old woman with anorexia nervosa, binge/purge type. Atomoxetine is a highly selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor with nonaddictive properties and limited effects of appetite suppression. Doses followed those used in a previous trial of atomoxetine in the treatment of binge ED, and response was assessed over 4 months, with significant i

Parkinson Disease.

Parkinson disease is a common neurodegenerative disorder that causes progressive motor and nonmotor disability. It is diagnosed clinically and requires a detailed history and neurologic examination to exclude alternative diagnoses. Although disease-modifying therapies do not exist for Parkinson disease, effective symptomatic therapies, including dopaminergic medications and surgery, allow patients to maintain good quality of life for many years. Nonmotor symptoms, including mood, cognitive, sleep, autonomic, and gastrointestinal symptoms, should be managed by a multidisciplinary team of clinic

Misdiagnoses of Epilepsy as Ekbom Syndrome, Mood Instability, and Nocturnal Visual Hallucinations.

Epileptic seizures may be misdiagnosed if they manifest as psychiatric symptoms. We report three female patients with no preexisting history of epilepsy that were unsuccessfully treated as primary psychiatric disorder: one patient was initially diagnosed with somatization and Ekbom syndrome; the second was referred to psychiatrist due to mood instability and visual hallucinations; and the third one was referred for anxiety and hallucinations related to sleep. A carefully taken medical history clarified diagnoses of epilepsy. None of the patients responded to medications aimed at treating psych

Psoriasis and comorbid diseases: Epidemiology.

Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the skin that is increasingly being recognized as a systemic inflammatory disorder. Psoriatic arthritis is a well-known comorbidity of psoriasis. A rapidly expanding body of literature in various populations and settings supports additional associations between psoriasis and cardiometabolic diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, kidney disease, malignancy, infection, and mood disorders. The pathogenesis of comorbid disease in patients with psoriasis remains unknown; however, shared inflammatory pathways, cellular mediators, genetic susceptibi
