[Functional outcome after transmandibular resection and primary chemoradiation in advanced oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the functional outcome after transmandibular resection and reconstruction via a radial forearm flap (TMR+RFF) compared to primary chemoradiotherapy (pCRT) in advanced oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). METHODS: The study compared 50 OPSCC patients treated with TMR+RFF to 50 OPSCC patients receiving pCRT. The time taken to swallow water served as the primary endpoint. The Saxon test, maxillomandibular distance, Mallampati score, ratio of height to weight, nasal penetration, tracheostomy/gastral tube requirement, and four validated ques

Recommendations for postoperative radiotherapy in head & neck squamous cell carcinoma in the presence of flaps: A GORTEC internationally-reviewed HNCIG-endorsed consensus.

INTRODUCTION: Head and neck reconstructive surgery using a flap is increasingly common. Best practices and outcomes for postoperative radiotherapy (poRT) with flaps have not been specified. We aimed to provide consensus recommendations to assist clinical decision-making highlighting areas of uncertainty in the presence of flaps. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Radiation, medical, and surgical oncologists were assembled from GORTEC and internationally with the Head and Neck Cancer International Group (HNCIG). The consensus-building approach covered 59 topics across four domains: (1) identification of po

Utility of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccination in Management of HPV-associated Cutaneous Lesions.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced cutaneous disease is a common complaint for patients presenting for dermatology evaluation. Infection by HPV is the major etiologic factor in the development of cutaneous warts, epidermodysplasia verruciformis, and possibly a subset of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. Carcinoma of the genitourinary tract, most notably cervical carcinoma, is the most severe manifestation of infection with specific serotypes of HPV. For this reason, the HPV immunization (Gardasil) was developed in 2006 and upgraded in 2018 to a nonavalent formulation that includes serotypes 6

[Secondary Maxillofacial Revision Reconstruction Using Custom-Made Artificial Bone Following Resection of Primary Intraosseous Mandibular Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Microvascularized Fibula Flap Reconstruction].

The basic treatment for oral cancer is radical tumor resection and reconstruction, which alters the maxillofacial morphology and causes dysfunction. Reconstructive surgery can be performed with bone and soft tissue transplantation, but it is invasive and good morphological repair is difficult. Custom-made artificial bone(CT-BoneTM)consisting of calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite was newly authorized for clinical use in April 2018. It enables precise, minimally invasive maxillofacial bone reconstruction. Here, we report favorable facial morphological improvement using CT-BoneTM in a patient with

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid associated with papillary thyroid carcinoma and Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

INTRODUCTION: We report the first case of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the thyroid gland coexisting with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis and discuss various theories concerning the histogenesis of SCC of the thyroid gland and the optimal treatment strategy. CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old woman presented with an anterior neck mass measuring 4cm on clinical examination. Imaging showed a suspicious thyroid nodule invading the trachea. Total thyroidectomy with bilateral central lymph node resection was performed. Histological examination revealed tall cell variant of

High-risk mucosal HPV types associated with squamous cell carcinoma on the nose tip in an immunocompetent young man.

The oncogenic role of high-risk HPV in anogenital, head and neck, and cervical cancer is well recognized, but not in skin cancer in the general population. Some authors have demonstrated their appearance mainly on the hands and feet, particularly in the area of the nail bed, which could be due to contamination with HPV types from anogenital regions. Here, we describe a case of genital HPV associated with SCC on the nose tip in an immunocompetent young man, which was confirmed by histopathological findings and in situ hybridization. The importance of this report is to highlight the potential ro

Diagnosis and Diagnostic Imaging of Anal Canal Cancer.

Anal canal cancer is an uncommon malignancy but one that is often curable with optimal therapy. Owing to its unique location, histology, risk factors, and usual presentation, a careful diagnostic approach is warranted. This approach includes an excellent history and physical examination, including digital rectal examination, laboratory data, and comprehensive imaging. Anal cancer staging and formulation of a treatment plan depends on accurate imaging data. Modern radiographic techniques have improved staging quality and accuracy, and a thorough knowledge of anal anatomy is paramount to the opt

Cytokeratin7 expression in histologic and cytologic specimens of cystic neck metastasis from HPV positive squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil: A case report.

The majority of cystic squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the neck have been shown to be metastatic tumors from tonsillar SCCs associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR HPV). Recent studies have demonstrated cytokeratin (CK)7 involvement in the development of HPV positive SCC, but no report has been issued on its simultaneous expression in primary tonsillar and metastatic tumor with cystic change. We present a case of HPV positive tonsillar SCC of a 42-year-old male that initially manifested as a cystic neck mass expressing CK7, CK19, and p16 in primary and metastatic tumors. Immunohi

An update of the WCRF/AICR systematic literature review on esophageal and gastric cancers and citrus fruits intake.

PURPOSE: The 2007 World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research expert report concluded that foods containing vitamin C probably protect against esophageal cancer and fruits probably protect against gastric cancer. Most of the previous evidence was from case-control studies, which may be affected by recall and selection biases. More recently, several cohort studies have examined these associations. We conducted a systematic literature review of prospective studies on citrus fruits intake and risk of esophageal and gastric cancers. METHODS: PubMed was searched for studies p

EVIDENCE OF EPSTEIN-BARR VIRUS ASSOCIATION WITH HEAD AND NECK CANCERS: A REVIEW.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is ubiquitous: over 90% of the adult population is infected with this virus. EBV is capable of infecting both B lymphocytes and epithelial cells throughout the body including the head and neck region. Transmission occurs mainly by exchange of saliva. The infection is asymptomatic or mild in children but, in adolescents and young adults, it causes infectious mononucleosis, a self-limiting disease characterized by lethargy, sore throat, fever and lymphadenopathy. Once established, the virus often remains latent and people become lifelong carriers without experiencing dis

Incidence patterns and temporal trends of invasive nonmelanotic vulvar tumors in Germany 1999-2011. A population-based cancer registry analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Time trends on the incidence and characteristics of invasive vulvar cancer in Germany have so far been studied in few local population- and hospital based tumor registries. We aimed to provide an overview on recent developments of vulvar cancer in Germany, using population-based cancer registry data. METHODS: We analyzed the data on vulvar cancer of eight population-based German cancer registries for the period 1999-2011. ICD-10 codes and ICD-O-3 morphology codes were used to select site and histologic types. The annual percentage change was calculated on age-adjusted incidence ra

A 3 dimensional assessment of the depth of tumor invasion in microinvasive tongue squamous cell carcinoma--A case series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of the depth of tumor invasion (DI) in microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma (MISCC) of the tongue is critical to prognosis. An arithmetic model is generated to determine a reliable method of measurement of DI and correlate this with the local recurrence. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Tumor thickness (TT) and DI were measured in tissue sections of 14 cases of MISCC of the tongue, by manual ocular micrometer and digital image analysis at four reference points (A, B, C, and D). The comparison of TT and DI with relevant clinicopathologic parameters was assessed using Mann
