Glaucoma causes the degeneration of the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons, inducing a tissue reshaping that affects both the retina and the optic nerve head. Glaucoma care especially focuses on reducing intraocular pressure, a significant risk factor for progressive damage to the optic nerve. The use of natural treatments, such as herbs, vitamins, and minerals, is becoming increasingly popular today. While plants are a rich source of novel biologically active compounds, only a small percentage of them have been phytochemically examined and evaluated for their medicinal potential. I

This metabolite dataset was collected from transgenic murine retinal ganglion cells (RGC) expressing bacterial channelrhodopsin labeled with fluorescent protein. Mice were subjected to optic nerve crush (ONC) with subsequent RGC stimulation of channelrhodopsin with blue light (promoting regeneration) or non-stimulation (control). ONC induces retinal ganglion cell degeneration over time with progressive loss of axons. In transgenic bacterial channelrhodopsin expressing RGC cells, light stimulation promotes regeneration of ONC axons. Genetically matched wild-type uninjured optic nerves were anal

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic heterotopic ossification is an acquired serious complication described in patients with central nervous system disorders and defined by bone formation in non-osseous tissue.
CASE SUMMARY: We present an unusual case of a 13-yr-old boy presenting with hip pain and severe gait impairment 5 mo after the diagnosis of hemiplegia following a spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage. Computed tomography revealed bilateral heterotopic ossification of both the paretic and the non-paretic limbs, with entrapment of the sciatic nerve. The choice of surgical or nonsurgical management of

Brain diseases, including brain tumors, neurodegenerative disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, and traumatic brain injuries, are among the major disorders influencing human health, currently with no effective therapy. Due to the low regeneration capacity of neurons, insufficient secretion of neurotrophic factors, and the aggravation of ischemia and hypoxia after nerve injury, irreversible loss of functional neurons and nerve tissue damage occurs. This damage is difficult to repair and regenerate the central nervous system after injury. Neural stem cells (NSCs) are pluripotent stem cells that o

Characteristic features of osteoarthritis (OA) are joint pain and cartilage degeneration. The degeneration is caused by excess induction of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and the pain is caused by nerve growth factor (NGF)-dependent nerve invasion into synovial tissue in addition to nociceptive pain by prostaglandin (PG)E2. The objective of this study was to clarify the suppressive mechanism of PGE2 on the regulation of MMPs and NGF by focusing on mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and their endogenous phosphatase, dual-specificity phosphatase (DUSP)-1 in human synovial fibroblasts. The mammalian adrenal gland is composed of two main components; the catecholaminergic neural crest-derived medulla, found in the center of the gland, and the mesoderm-derived cortex producing steroidogenic hormones. The medulla is composed of neuroendocrine chromaffin cells with oxygen-sensing properties and is dependent on tissue interactions with the overlying cortex, both during development and in adulthood. Other relevant organs include the Zuckerkandl organ containing extra-adrenal chromaffin cells, and carotid oxygen-sensing bodies containing glomus cells. Chromaffin and glomus cells rev

An isolated third nerve palsy presenting as the primary manifestation of a lymphoma is rare, with only few cases having been described. The present study reports an unusual case of a healthy 67-year old male diagnosed with isolated right oculomotor nerve palsy (ONP), who was found to have an underlying B cell lymphoma. The patient's medical records were accessed upon consent. A thorough physical examination, including stroke and infections work-ups were performed. A chest computerized tomography (CT), brain magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography (PET) scans and a mediastin

In moderately or morbidly obese patients, bariatric surgery has been proven to be an effective therapeutic approach to control body weight and comorbidities. Surgery-mediated modulation of brain function via modified postoperative secretion of gut peptides and vagal nerve stimulation was identified as an underlying mechanism in weight loss and improvement of weight-related diseases. Increased basal and postprandial plasma levels of gastrointestinal hormones like glucagon-like peptide 1 and peptide YY that act on specific areas of the hypothalamus to reduce food intake, either directly or media

Varicella- zoster virus infection is an intriguing medical entity that involves many medical specialties including infectious diseases, immunology, dermatology, and neurology. It can affect patients from early childhood to old age. Its treatment requires expertise in pain management and psychological support. While varicella is caused by acute viremia, herpes zoster occurs after the dormant viral infection, involving the cranial nerve or sensory root ganglia, is re-activated and spreads orthodromically from the ganglion, via the sensory nerve root, to the innervated target tissue (skin, cornea

Upon peripheral nerve injury, specific molecular events, including increases in the expression of selected neurotrophic factors, are initiated to prepare the tissue for regeneration. However, the mechanisms underlying these events and the nature of the cells involved are poorly understood. We used the injury-induced upregulation of glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) expression as a tool to gain insights into these processes. We found that both myelinating and nonmyelinating Schwann cells are responsible for the dramatic increase in GDNF expression after injury. We also demonstrate t

A seven-year-old shar-pei dog was referred because of severe lumbosacral pain and faecal incontinence of 20 days' duration. Neurological examination was characterised by plegic tail, absence of perineal reflex, dilated anus, perineum and tail analgesia, and severe lumbosacral pain. The neurological clinical signs were suggestive of a selective lesion involving sacral and caudal spinal cord segments and/or related nerve roots. A magnetic resonance imaging of lumbosacral spine was performed and was suggestive of an intradural lesion. Primary or secondary neoplasia was considered as the most prob

INTRODUCTION: Changes in subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT) in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients may result in altered dynamics; consequently, quantification of these dynamics might support objective diagnosis of CTS.
METHODS: We measured and compared longitudinal excursion of the flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus tendons, the median nerve, and the SSCT between the most and least affected hands of 51 CTS patients during extension-to-fist motion.
RESULTS: Median nerve and flexor digitorum superficialis tendon excursions in the most affected hands were smaller than in the leas

Ganglion cysts (ganglia) are benign lesions of the soft tissue arising in the periarticular space. We present a 54-year-old woman with a 5-month history of headache and weakness of the tongue with deviation to the left side who had a rare extraneural intradural bilobate ganglion cyst of the atlanto-occipital joint compressing the hypoglossal nerve. An MRI showed a bilobate cystic lesion in the premedullary cistern on the left side at the level of the hypoglossal canal. This lesion was removed using a lateral suboccipital approach in the semi-sitting position with removal of the C1 hemiarch. Th

A domestic ferret was submitted for sterilisation because of right testis enlargement. Oestradiol and cortisol concentrations were within normal physiological ranges, but testosterone was below and progesterone above normal. Microscopically, the right testis, with the exception of a small part of the epididymis, was replaced with neoplastic tissue. The tumour was composed of streams and bundles of closely packed spindle to ovoid cells forming whorls around collagen and capillaries, and separated by a collagenous matrix. In some areas, cells were loosely arranged and separated by a pale myxomat

Intra-abdominal fat accumulation is involved in development of the metabolic syndrome, which is associated with insulin and leptin resistance. We show here that ectopic expression of very low levels of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in epididymal fat (Epi) reverses both insulin and leptin resistance. UCP1 expression in Epi improved glucose tolerance and decreased food intake in both diet-induced and genetically obese mouse models. In contrast, UCP1 expression in Epi of leptin-receptor mutant mice did not alter food intake, though it significantly decreased blood glucose and insulin levels. Thus,

Neurotrophic and growth factors are major subgroups of polypeptides that are synthesized naturally and characterized by the following effects: neuronal differentiation, survey of nerve cell functional integrity, protection against degeneration and lesions, which maintain nerve cells alive. Neurotrophic and growth factors increase the resistance of neuronal tissue to the noxious influence such as hypoxia, exitotoxicity, trauma, stress injury, hypoglycemia, etc. Neurotrophic and growth factors are important in the synaptic plastivcity, activity of learning and cognitive proecesses, regulation of

In a nerve crush model of denervation, we examined muscle matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression, localization and activity. In normal muscle, MMP mRNA levels were low, and immunohistochemically MMPs were distributed around the muscle fibre with MMPs-3, -7 and -9 also staining at the neuromuscular junction. Seven days after nerve crush, muscle MMP immunoreactivity, especially MMP-12 and MMP-14, became irregularly distributed. At 20 days reinnervation of the muscle was observed, and some restitution of the normal pattern of immunoreactivity was noted concomitant with a higher level of MMP mR
