Fundamental pharmacological expressions on ocular exposure to capsaicin, the principal constituent in pepper sprays.

Eye irritation assessment is compulsory to anticipate health risks in military personnel exposed to riot control agents such as capsaicin, the principal constituent of oleoresin capsicum, or pepper sprays. The present work investigates certain fundamental yet unaddressed pharmacological manifestations on ocular exposure to capsaicin. Ocular pharmacology of capsaicin was studied using acute eye irritation (AEI), bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay, corneal fluorescein staining and indirect ophthalmoscopy studies, transcorneal permeation, Schirmer tear secretion test, nerve cond

Clinical characterization and genetic analysis of Korean patients with X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1.

Mutations in the gap junction protein beta 1 gene (GJB1) cause X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 (CMTX1). CMTX1 is representative of the intermediate type of CMT, having both demyelinating and axonal neuropathic features. We analyzed the clinical and genetic characterization of 128 patients with CMTX1 from 63 unrelated families. Genetic analysis revealed a total of 43 mutations including 6 novel mutations. Ten mutations were found from two or more unrelated families. p.V95M was most frequently observed. The frequency of CMTX1 was 9.6% of total Korean CMT family and was 14.8% when cal

Structural and Functional Abnormalities of the Neuromuscular Junction in the Trembler-J Homozygote Mouse Model of Congenital Hypomyelinating Neuropathy.

Mutations in peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) result in the most common form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, CMT1A. This hereditary peripheral neuropathy is characterized by dysmyelination of peripheral nerves, reduced nerve conduction velocity, and muscle weakness. APMP22 point mutation in L16P (leucine 16 to proline) underlies a form of human CMT1A as well as the Trembler-J mouse model of CMT1A. Homozygote Trembler-J mice (Tr(J)) die early postnatally, fail to make peripheral myelin, and, therefore, are more similar to patients with congenital hypomyelinating neuropathy than those

Abnormal brain activation in excoriation (skin-picking) disorder: evidence from an executive planning fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Excoriation (skin-picking) disorder (SPD) is a relatively common psychiatric condition whose neurobiological basis is unknown. AIMS: To probe the function of fronto-striatal circuitry in SPD. METHOD: Eighteen participants with SPD and 15 matched healthy controls undertook an executive planning task (Tower of London) during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Activation during planning was compared between groups using region of interest and whole-brain permutation cluster approaches. RESULTS: The SPD group exhibited significant functional underactivation in a cluster e

Does delayed facial involvement implicate a pattern of "descending reversible paralysis" in Fisher syndrome?

OBJECTIVE: Delayed facial palsy (DFP) has often been described during the recovery stage of Fisher syndrome (FS), but the implications of DFP in FS pathophysiology have not been reported previously. The aim of this study was to identify the incidence and clinical course of DFP in FS, and to determine its clinical/pathophysiological implications in FS. METHODS: About 71 FS patients were enrolled from seven university-based hospitals in Korea. DFP was defined with respect to new development of unilateral or bilateral facial palsies with delayed onset after either the nadir or improvement of ini

Rutin ameliorates diabetic neuropathy by lowering plasma glucose and decreasing oxidative stress via Nrf2 signaling pathway in rats.

Rutin exhibits antidiabetic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes rutin an attractive candidate for diabetic complications. The present study was designed to investigate the potential effect of rutin on diabetic neuropathy. After induction of diabetic neuropathy, rutin (5mg/kg, 25mg/kg and 50mg/kg) were daily given to the diabetic rats for 2 weeks. At the end of rutin administration, rutin produced a significant inhibition of mechanical hyperalgesia, thermal hyperalgesia and cold allodynia, as well as partial restoration of nerve conduction velocities in diabetic rats. Synergistic lithium chloride and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor delivery for peripheral nerve repair in a rodent sciatic nerve injury model.

BACKGROUND: Restoring peripheral nerve function after long gap peripheral nerve damage is challenging. Lithium chloride has demonstrated neuroprotective qualities and therefore shows great potential therapeutic benefit for some neurodegenerative diseases. This study examined the synergistic combination of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor and lithium chloride and its effect on peripheral nerve regeneration in a rat sciatic nerve injury model. METHODS: Polycaprolactone conduits with glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor-loaded double-walled microspheres and local injections of

Functional properties of tooth pulp neurons responding to thermal stimulation.

The response properties of tooth pulp neurons that respond to noxious thermal stimulation of the dental pulp have been not well-studied. The present study was designed to characterize the response properties of tooth pulp neurons to noxious thermal stimulation of the dental pulp. Experiments were conducted on 25 male ferrets, and heat stimulation was applied by a computer-controlled thermode. Only 15% of tooth pulp neurons (n = 39) responded to noxious thermal stimulation of the teeth. Tooth pulp neurons were found in both the superficial and deep nuclear regions of the subnucleus caudalis (Vc

Skin temperature changes following sciatic nerve injury in rats.

In the clinical setting, skin temperature is both easily evaluated and useful in assessments of sympathetic dysfunction. The present study purposed to observe the serial skin temperature changes of both hindlimbs following several types of sciatic nerve injury (complete transection and ligation model [CTL], crush injury model [CRI], and chronic constriction injury model [CCI]) in Sprague-Dawley rats and, further, to delineate the possible mechanisms through various evaluation methods. The temperature differences between the intact and injured areas (ΔT) on the plantar surface and toes varied a

Minimal epicondylectomy improves neurologic deficits in moderate to severe cubital tunnel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of minimal medial epicondylectomy for cubital tunnel syndrome included patients with mild disease, making it difficult to determine how much this procedure improved sensory and motor impairments in patients with moderate to severe disease. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked if minimal epicondylectomy improved sensory and motor impairments in patients with moderate to severe cubital tunnel syndrome. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 25 patients treated with minimal medial epicondylectomy for advanced cubital tunnel syndrome involving motor weakness between January 20

Early demyelination of primary A-fibers induces a rapid-onset of neuropathic pain in rat.

Some types of peripheral neuropathic pain are associated with damage to myelin rather than to axons of primary sensory neurons. It is extremely important to develop selective demyelination animal models for understanding neuropathic pain caused by demyelination. We induced a rapid-onset and reversible demyelination of peripheral A-fibers and neuropathic pain behaviors in adult rats by a single injection of cobra venom into the sciatic nerve. The relation between A-fiber demyelination and the abnormal pain behaviors was investigated using this model. Microfilament recordings revealed that cobra

Tardy palsy of descending branch of posterior interosseous nerve: sequela to plate osteosynthesis of forearm bones.

We report a case of tardy paralysis of the descending branch of the posterior interosseous nerve as a consequence of plate osteosynthesis for fracture of both bone forearms. The patient had been operated on 23 years earlier and palsy occurred after a gap of 19 years. The most probable antecedent cause of the palsy was the use of a high-profile implant. The patient was treated by removal of the plate and tendon transfer.

[Signal evaluation of continuous vagal nerve stimulation for recurrent laryngeal nerve protection in thyroid surgery].

INTRODUCTION: Newly developed vagal stimulation probes permit continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve during thyroid resection. A complete signal loss indicates an interrupted nerve conductance. There are no other criteria so far which may serve as warning criteria for imminent nerve function impairment. METHODS: The vagal stimulation probe V3 was used in 50 patients with thyroid resection (96 nerves at risk) and recorded during the complete operation (V3, adhesive tube electrode, bipolar needle electrode; Fa. Inomed, Teningen, Germany). The signal parameter

Cutaneous silent periods in the assessment of mild cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

STUDY DESIGN: Clinical, neuroradiologic, and neurophysiologic description of 21 patients with compressive cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CCSM). OBJECTIVE: To describe the utility of cutaneous silent periods (CSPs) for functional evaluation of mild CCSM. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Electroneurography, electromyography, and somatosensory and motor evoked potentials (SEPs, MEPs) are routinely used for comprehensive functional neurophysiological evaluation of CCSM. CSPs have been reported in various intramedullary spinal cord lesions, however, they have not been systematically studied in mild

Multimodality-evoked potential study of anti-aquaporin-4 antibody-positive and -negative multiple sclerosis patients.

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is claimed to be a distinct disease entity from multiple sclerosis (MS) because of its strong association with NMO-IgG/anti-AQP4 antibody; however, the in vivo role of the antibody remains unknown. Therefore, we aimed to clarify whether the presence of anti-AQP4 antibody is associated with any abnormalities in multimodality-evoked potentials in 111 patients with relapsing-remitting or relapsing-progressive MS, including the opticospinal form of MS, 18 of whom were seropositive for anti-AQP4 antibody. More patients with anti-AQP4 antibody showed a lack of the P100 com

Development of animal model for vasculatic neuropathy: Induction by ischemic-reperfusion in the rat femoral artery.

Ischemic-reperfusion (I/R) is common in various pathological conditions like diabetic complication, complex regional pain syndrome type II (CRPS II), necrotizing vascular occlusive disease and trauma. We have developed an animal model of ischemic-reperfusion injury induced nociceptive sensory neuropathy in rats. The model was validated after 2, 4 and 6h of ischemia followed by prolonged reperfusion. The sensory behavioral assessment revealed thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia in paw and in tail which expressed the peripheral and central neuropathic pain respectively. We observed a decrease in
