Prediction of knee loads during activities of daily living using custom instrumented insoles and machine learning.

Medial joint contact force, knee adduction moment, and knee flexion moment are key mechanical risk factors of knee osteoarthritis, yet calculating these knee loads traditionally requires time-intensive procedures with a gait laboratory. Integrating wearable technologies, such as instrumented insoles, with neural networks offers a promising avenue for rapid and accessible estimation of these variables in clinical environments. This study aimed to estimate knee loads during walking, running, sit-to-stand, and stand-to-sit activities using a recurrent neural network model trained on wearable sens

Subtype classification of gastric spindle cell tumors in whole slide images.

AIMS: Accurate cancer subtype classification is critical due to variations in tumor progression and prognosis. Traditionally, pathologists classified subtypes manually by examining pathological slides under the microscope. To address increasing workloads, this study aimed to classify gastric spindle cell tumor (GSCT) subtypes-gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), leiomyomas, and schwannomas-using a convoluted neural network applied to whole-slide images (WSIs). To date, no automated pipeline has been proposed for classifying GSCTs into GIST, leiomyoma, and schwannoma from hematoxylin and eos

Lightweight Transfer Learning Models for Multi-Class Brain Tumor Classification: Glioma, Meningioma, Pituitary Tumors, and No Tumor MRI Screening.

Glioma, pituitary tumors, and meningiomas constitute the major types of primary brain tumors. The challenge in achieving a definitive diagnosis stem from the brain's complex structure, limited accessibility for precise imaging, and the resemblance between different types of tumors. An alternative and promising solution is the application of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically through deep learning models. We developed multiple lightweight deep learning models ResNet-18 (both pretrained on ImageNet and trained from scratch), ResNet-34, ResNet-50, and a custom CNN to classify glioma, meni

Improved Transfer Learning for Detecting Upper-Limb Movement Intention Using Mechanical Sensors in an Exoskeletal Rehabilitation System.

The objective of this study was to propose a novel strategy for detecting upper-limb motion intentions from mechanical sensor signals using deep and heterogeneous transfer learning techniques. Three sensor types, surface electromyography (sEMG), force-sensitive resistors (FSRs), and inertial measurement units (IMUs), were combined to capture biometric signals during arm-up, hold, and arm-down movements. To distinguish motion intentions, deep learning models were constructed using the CIFAR-ResNet18 and CIFAR-MobileNetV2 architectures. The input features of the source models were sEMG, FSR, and

HDE-Array: Development and Validation of a New Dry Electrode Array Design to Acquire HD-sEMG for Hand Position Estimation.

This paper aims to introduce HDE-Array (High-Density Electrode Array), a novel dry electrode array for acquiring High-Density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) for hand position estimation through RPC-Net (Recursive Prosthetic Control Network), a neural network defined in a previous study. We aim to demonstrate the hypothesis that the position estimates returned by RPC-Net using HD-sEMG signals acquired with HDE-Array are as accurate as those obtained from signals acquired with gel electrodes. We compared the results, in terms of precision of hand position estimation by RPC-Net, using signals

Explaining deep learning models for age-related gait classification based on acceleration time series.

BACKGROUND: Gait analysis holds significant importance in monitoring daily health, particularly among older adults. Advancements in sensor technology enable the capture of movement in real-life environments and generate big data. Machine learning, notably deep learning (DL), shows promise to use these big data in gait analysis. However, the inherent black-box nature of these models poses challenges for their clinical application. This study aims to enhance transparency in DL-based gait classification for aged-related gait patterns using Explainable Artificial Intelligence, such as SHapley Addi

Neural network-assisted humanisation of COVID-19 hamster transcriptomic data reveals matching severity states in human disease.

BACKGROUND: Translating findings from animal models to human disease is essential for dissecting disease mechanisms, developing and testing precise therapeutic strategies. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted this need, particularly for models showing disease severity-dependent immune responses. METHODS: Single-cell transcriptomics (scRNAseq) is well poised to reveal similarities and differences between species at the molecular and cellular level with unprecedented resolution. However, computational methods enabling detailed matching are still scarce. Here, we prov

Augmenting Blood Test and Periodontal Examination Data with Generative Adversarial Networks for Enhanced Dementia Risk Prediction.

This study investigates the effectiveness of data augmentation to improve dementia risk prediction using deep neural networks (DNNs). Previous research has shown that basic blood test data were cost-effective and crucial in predicting cognitive function, as indicated by mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scores. However, creating models that can accommodate various conditions is a significant challenge due to constraints related to blood test and MMSE results, such as high costs, limited sample size, and missing data from specific tests not conducted in certain facilities. Periodontal examin

ArcheD, a residual neural network for prediction of cerebrospinal fluid amyloid-beta from amyloid PET images.

Detection and measurement of amyloid-beta (Aβ) in the brain is a key factor for early identification and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We aimed to develop a deep learning model to predict Aβ cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentration directly from amyloid PET images, independent of tracers, brain reference regions or preselected regions of interest. We used 1870 Aβ PET images and CSF measurements to train and validate a convolutional neural network ("ArcheD"). We evaluated the ArcheD performance in relation to episodic memory and the standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) of cortical Aβ.

ABR-Attention: An Attention-Based Model for Precisely Localizing Auditory Brainstem Response.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is an evoked potential in the brainstem's neural centers in response to sound stimuli. Clinically, characteristic waves, especially Wave V latency, extracted from ABR can objectively indicate auditory loss and diagnose diseases. Several methods have been developed for the extraction of characteristic waves. To ensure the effectiveness of the method, most of the methods are time-consuming and rely on the heavy workloads of clinicians. To reduce the workload of clinicians, automated extraction methods have been developed. However, the above methods also have lim

Predicting maternal risk level using machine learning models.

BACKGROUND: Maternal morbidity and mortality remain critical health concerns globally. As a result, reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) is part of goal 3 in the global sustainable development goals (SDGs), and previously, it was an important indicator in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Therefore, identifying high-risk groups during pregnancy is crucial for decision-makers and medical practitioners to mitigate mortality and morbidity. However, the availability of accurate predictive models for maternal mortality and maternal health risks is challenging. Compared with traditiona
