Repetitive behaviours in typically developing 2-year-olds.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive behaviours are an essential part of the diagnosis of autism but are also commonly seen in typically developing children. The current study investigated the frequency and factor structure of repetitive behaviours in a large community sample of 2-year-olds. METHODS: A new measure, the Repetitive Behaviour Questionnaire (RBQ-2) was completed by 679 parents. RESULTS: The RBQ-2 had good psychometric properties. A four-factor model provided the best fit for the data, accounting for 51% of the variance, and suggested 4 sub-scales: unusual sensory interests, repetitive motor m

Screening children with asthma for psychosocial adjustment problems: a tool for health care professionals.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a brief questionnaire for health care professionals to use in screening children with asthma for psychosocial adjustment problems. METHOD: The initial version of the Childhood Asthma Resiliency Questionnaire (CARQ) listed 85 items focusing on self-esteem, medical fears, peer relationships, family relations, stress, and depression. The number of items was reduced after focus groups and pilot testing. In pilot tests, 100 children with asthma completed the CARQ. Parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Another sample of 73 children with mild asthma was also ob

Familial truncus arteriosus: a possible autosomal-recessive trait.

Truncus arteriosus is a relatively uncommon congenital malformation. It accounts for approximately 1% of congenital heart diseases. The defect occurs sporadically but 22q11 deletion is frequently noted in such patients with conotruncal defects. We studied six cases of TA in four closely related families. Analysis of karyotypes in these cases was normal. Family 1 has one affected male infant who was born in 1998. Family 2 has two affected children (one male and one female) who were born in 1989 and 1995, respectively. They have four other normal children. Family 3 has two affected children (one

Clear plastic cups: a childhood choking hazard.

The disposable plastic beverage cup is not usually regarded as hazardous to young children. Certain varieties of these products however, are manufactured from a brittle, clear plastic that easily cracks and fragments. While most conscientious parents keep their children safe from peanuts, balloons, and other known choking hazards, a child can surreptitiously bite a cup edge and aspirate the fragment. We report two cases of foreign body aspiration involving clear plastic cups that went undetected one of which remained 21 months following a negative rigid bronchoscopy. Diagnostic difficulties ar

The Inter-Regional Epidemiological Study of Childhood Cancer (IRESCC): case control study of children with bone and soft tissue sarcomas.

The Inter-Regional Epidemiological Study of Childhood Cancer included 43 cases of soft tissue and 30 cases of bone sarcomas, together with their 146 matched controls. Analysis of a wide range of aetiological factors revealed few risk factors relating to events during the index pregnancy, the earlier medical experiences of the case child, or parental medical, occupational and smoking history. Associations which did emerge included: lower birth weight in children with Ewing's tumour, an excess of mothers of children with soft tissue sarcoma with symptoms of toxaemia in pregnancy; and more childr

The effect of private attitudes on public policy. Prenatal screening for neural tube defects as a prototype.

The quantitative use of patients' attitudes in medicine has thus far been limited to decisions involving either treatment alternatives or the use or nonuse of a particular diagnostic test. Preference theory has not been applied either to the use of screening tests or to the development of large-scale health-related public policy decisions. In this paper we have, in a prototypical fashion, analyzed the effect patient attitudes have on a public policy decision faced by many countries today--whether or not to institute a screening program for neural tube defects. We have assessed the attitudes of

Mixed-Methods Evaluation of the HealthyWEY E-Learning Toolkit for Promoting Healthy Weight in the Early Years.

Despite being well-positioned to promote healthy lifestyles in young children, early years practitioners often face barriers to supporting child weight management. This mixed-methods study aimed to assess the preliminary effectiveness and acceptability of an e-learning toolkit (HealthyWEY) designed to upskill and support multi-agency professionals to promote healthy weight in early childhood. A total of 54 health visitors/community nursery nurses, 38 children's centre staff and 17 other health professionals engaged with the HealthyWEY e-learning, which drew on self-determination theory and con

Interplay between long-term vulnerability and new risk: Young adolescent and maternal mental health immediately before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: We examine whether there has been an increase in young adolescent and maternal mental health problems from pre- to post-onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Children aged 11-12 years and their mothers participating in a UK population-based birth cohort (Wirral Child Health and Development Study) provided mental health data between December 2019 and March 2020, and again 3 months after lockdown, 89% (N = 202) of 226 assessed pre-COVID-19. Emotional and behavioural problems were assessed by self- and maternal reports, and long-term vulnerability by maternal report of prior child

Prenatal alcohol and cocaine exposure: influences on cognition, speech, language, and hearing.

UNLABELLED: This paper reviews research on the consequences of prenatal exposure to alcohol and cocaine on children's speech, language, hearing, and cognitive development. The review shows that cognitive impairment, learning disabilities, and behavioral disorders are the central nervous system manifestations of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), and cranio-facial abnormalities are also present. Delays in language acquisition, as well as receptive and expressive language deficits, are commonly reported. The cranio-facial abnormalities of FAS, which sometimes include cleft palate, make the child pron

Does expectant fathers' attachment style or depressive mood relate to their embodied mentalizing capacity of their 12-month-old infant?

Parental embodied mentalizing is about how parents show with their body that they hold in mind their infants' mind. The main study's aim was to explore what influences fathers' embodied mentalizing. A random sample of 200 fathers and their 12-month-old infants were drawn from a large longitudinal, population-based dataset, the "Little in Norway (LiN)" study. Fathers' partner related attachment style was assessed at enrollment, symptoms of depression were measured four times during pregnancy and at 12 months postpartum, as was also parenting stress. Videotaped father-infant interactions were co

Traumatic birth experiences and maternal caregiving behaviors and attitudes in black and white women.

PURPOSE: This longitudinal investigation examined the association between traumatic birth experiences (measured via self-report and clinician-report) and caregiving behaviors and attitudes and any race-related differences in these associations. METHODS: Subjective childbirth trauma was measured via a three-item questionnaire at 12 weeks postpartum. Medical childbirth factors were extracted from the electronic health record. Maternal caregiving behaviors and attitudes were assessed via comprehensive questionnaires (i.e., mother-infant bonding and parenting stress) and observation ratings (i.e.,

Network analysis of parental involvement, parent-child relationships, emotional and behavioral problems, and social media addiction in adolescents.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which parental involvement, parent-child relationships, emotional and behavioral problems, and social media addiction may interact in complex ways. This study aims to explore the network structure of these factors to identify key domains and their interconnections. A total of 668 adolescents participated in this study, with data collected in October 2024 through surveys. The Parental Involvement Scale, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Parent-Child Closeness Scale, and Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) were used to a

Neighborhood Social Disorganization in Early Adolescence and Substance Use Trajectories into Young Adulthood: The Moderating Role of Effortful Control and Parental Substance Use.

Adolescents living in socially disorganized neighborhoods may consume substances more frequently. Although some evidence suggests that such potential neighborhood influences persist into young adulthood, findings remain inconsistent. More research is needed that includes different indicators of neighborhood social disorganization, substance use outcomes, and family- and individual-level moderating factors. To address these gaps, this study examined the associations between three indicators of neighborhood social disorganization—social fragmentation, socioeconomic deprivation, and disorder—in e

Postpartum depression and maternal-infant bonding: the mediating role of mentalizing and parenting self-efficacy.

BACKGROUND: The accumulated evidence suggested that postpartum depression was mainly associated with maternal-infant bonding. However, this link needed to be further explained by potential mediating factors. This study aimed to investigate the impact of postpartum depression on maternal-infant bonding, examining the mediating roles of mentalizing and parenting self-efficacy. METHODS: A sample of 390 postpartum women was recruited from a maternity hospital around four weeks postpartum. A multiple mediating analysis was conducted to investigate how mentalizing and parenting self-efficacy affecte

Recalled parental behavior of women and men with social anxiety disorder - The importance of the father-child relationship.

There is limited clarity in the research regarding sex-specific differences in Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). To address this gap, the current study focuses on examining sex-specific differences in sociodemographic factors and clinical impairment, as well as parenting behavior. The sample consisted of 425 women (39.0 ± 14.3 years) and 283 men (43.0 ± 14.0 years), all SCID-diagnosed with SAD. Both groups were compared regarding SAD symptom severity (Social Phobia Inventory; SPIN), comorbidities, current partnerhip, level of education and clinical impairment (suicidal thoughts, psychotherapeutic

Patients with anorexia nervosa perceive higher emotional connectedness to their parents than bulimia nervosa patients independent of objective family factors.

BACKGROUND: Psychological constructs of individual autonomy (IA) and emotional connectedness (EC) differ between patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN); however, it is unclear whether objective family factors modulate these associations. METHODS: In a cohort of 445 participants from the FamFINED study (FAMily Factors INvolved in Eating Disorders) with eating disorders (EDs) diagnosed as AN (n = 232) or BN (n = 213), we assessed objective psychosocial family factors as well as the IA and EC constructs using the self-rated Subjective Family Image Test (SFIT) questionnaire.

Child reward neurocircuitry and parental substance use history: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Substance use research has focused on family history of alcohol use disorders but less on other addictions in biological family members. We examined how parental substance use history relates to reward system functioning, specifically nucleus accumbens (NAcc) and putamen activation at age 9-10 in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. This research hopes to address limitations in prior literature by focusing analyses on a large, substance-naïve sample. METHOD: We included ABCD participants with valid Monetary Incentive Delay task fMRI Baseline data and parent sub

Correlates of nonmedical use of prescription opioids among a cohort of adolescents in Ontario, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Mortality and morbidity rates related to prescription opioid analgesics have been rising in North America and may be a gateway to the nonmedical use of prescription opioids (NUPO). The purpose of this study was to explore correlates of NUPO in the adolescent population given the scarce literature in this area. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 10,163 middle- and high-school students (15.1 ± 1.8 years old; 57.0% female; 55.6% White ethnic background) in Ontario were derived from the 2017 Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey. Potential correlates of NUPO in the past year in
