Effect of minimally invasive radioguided parathyroidectomy on efficacy, length of stay, and costs in the management of primary hyperparathyroidism.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the first 20 patients who underwent minimally invasive radioguided parathyroidectomies (MIRPs) performed at the authors' institution with 20 similar patients who underwent a more conventional surgical approach for primary hyperparathyroidism. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: The technique of parathyroidectomy has traditionally involved a bilateral exploration of the neck with the intent of visualizing four parathyroid glands and resecting enlarged parathyroid glands. Parathyroid scanning using radioisotopes has evolved and now can localize adenomas in 80% to 90% of patients. MIR

Design Preferences for Mental Health Apps Among Nondigitally Native Adults With Chronic Pain: Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: On a population level, mental health apps are accessible and effective. However, nondigitally native adults with chronic pain are a large and growing population who have been neglected during the development process of these interventions. Although technology use is rapidly growing among this population, their engagement with mobile health-related apps is lagging because usability is often not optimized for their needs and preferences. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify design preferences and determinants of engagement with mental health apps by nondigitally native adults who

Usability and User Experience of a Digital Platform Prototype (Healthy Bone) to Promote Pharmacological and Nonpharmacological Treatment in Patients With Osteoporosis: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis-related fractures significantly impact older adults, often leading to disability and even premature death. While pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions are widely recommended for managing osteoporosis, adherence to these interventions remains low. To address this challenge, we developed the Healthy Bone digital platform (desktop, mobile app, and smart TV internet-based) for use in clinical settings to improve disease management and treatment adherence. It integrates a multimedia health-related behavioral change program with a patient monitoring and manage

A Novel Clinician-Orchestrated Virtual Reality Platform for Distraction During Pediatric Intravenous Procedures in Children With Hemophilia: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Needles are frequently required for routine medical procedures. Children with severe hemophilia require intensive intravenous (IV) therapy to treat and prevent life-threatening bleeding and undergo hundreds of IV procedures. Fear of needle-related procedures may lead to avoidance of future health care and poor clinical outcomes. Virtual reality (VR) is a promising distraction technique during procedures, but barriers to commercially available VR platforms for pediatric health care purposes have prevented widespread use. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that we could create a VR platform

Radiographic and clinical evaluation of free-hand placement of C-2 pedicle screws. Clinical article.

OBJECT: Stabilization of the cervical spine can be challenging when instrumentation involves the axis. Fixation with C1-2 transarticular screws combined with posterior wiring and bone graft placement has yielded excellent fusion rates, but the technique is technically demanding and places the vertebral arteries (VAs) at risk. Placement of screws in the pars interarticularis of C-2 as described by Harms and Melcher has allowed rigid fixation with greater ease and theoretically decreases the risk to the VA. However, fluoroscopy is suggested to avoid penetration laterally, medially, and superiorl

Eloquent noneloquence: redefinition of cortical eloquence based on outcomes of superficial cerebral cavernous malformation resection.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral cavernous malformations (CMs) are pathological lesions that cause discrete cortical disruption with hemorrhage, and their transcortical resections can cause additional iatrogenic disruption. The analysis of microsurgically treated CMs might identify areas of "eloquent noneloquence," or cortex that is associated with unexpected deficits when injured or transgressed. METHODS: Patients from a consecutive microsurgical series of superficial cerebral CMs who presented to the authors' center over a 13-year period were retrospectively analyzed. Neurological outcomes were measured

Nonenhancing motor eloquent gliomas: navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation oncobiological signature.

OBJECTIVE: Preoperative grading of nonenhancing motor eloquent gliomas is hampered by a lack of specific imaging surrogates. Tumor grading is crucial for the informed consent discussion before tumor resection. In this paper, the authors hypothesized that navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS)-derived metrics could provide significant information to distinguish between high- and low-grade motor eloquent gliomas that present as nonenhancing tumors and therefore contribute to improving patient counseling, timing of treatment, preoperative planning, and intraoperative strategies. Feasibility of Establishing Community Living Labs (CoLLabs) to Improve Access to Prostate Health Resources, Education, Amenities, and Community Health: Protocol for a Pragmatic Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, nearly 60,000 prostate cancer (CaP) cases were reported among Black men, who face an estimated lifetime risk of approximately 1 in 6, compared with 1 in 8 among White men. The disproportionate burden of CaP in Black men has been attributed to a combination of health-system factors, variations in care processes, and individual- or patient-level determinants. Addressing these multilevel contributors will require innovative strategies to advance prostate health equity. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we discuss the protocol for assessing the feasibility of establishing a Community

Usability Across 3 mHealth Problem-Solving Training Interventions for Diverse Neurodevelopmental and Neurological Populations: Multicase Usability Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: mHealth (mobile health) interventions that integrate psychoeducation with structured problem-solving training (PST) hold strong potential for improving self-management of chronic conditions. Evaluating the usability of these interventions requires assessing technological, pedagogical, and sociocultural fit. However, most usability evaluations remain narrowly technocentric, focusing on interface-level metrics while neglecting pedagogical coherence, cultural responsiveness, and patient learning needs. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study aimed to characterize usability challenges and f

Respiration-Induced Displacements of Abdominal Aortic Branches-An MRI Study.

Introduction: The endovascular surgical approach provides a minimally invasive treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms with less perioperative morbidity. This technique depends heavily on imaging to diagnose, plan surgical treatment, conduct the surgical procedure, and follow-up with patients. Image fusion technique was proposed to decrease radiation and injected contrast exposure; however, the accuracy of image fusion still needs to be improved. One of the major causes of this inaccuracy is the displacement of visceral arteries during respiration. Objective: To analyze the physiological respi

Exploring the Barriers to and Facilitators of Using Virtual Reality Relaxation for Patients With Psychiatric Problems: Qualitative Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Stress is a key transdiagnostic factor in the onset and recurrence of psychiatric disorders. Virtual reality (VR) in mental health care, particularly virtual natural environments, shows promising results in promoting relaxation, as evidenced by tools such as VRelax. While initial studies have demonstrated the efficacy of VRelax, further implementation in routine mental health care requires a systematic exploration of its use by patients. Understanding these perspectives can help tailor VR tools to meet the needs of users better and enhance their effectiveness in clinical settings.
