The Effects of Personality, Anxiety and Depression on the Attentional Processing of Emotional Faces.

Individual differences in emotional information processing may be explained by attentional biases related to personality traits and affective symptoms. The present study examined how personality, anxiety, and depression symptoms relate to visual attention toward emotional facial expressions. Participants (N = 103) from a non-clinical student sample completed the Big Five Personality Inventory (BFI) and Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL-25), followed by an eye-tracking task assessing attention to paired neutral and emotional faces. Attentional processing was assessed using initial orienting (time

An analysis of the relationship of selected personality traits on perceived stress in patients undergoing ablation for atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the correlation between selected personality traits and the level of perceived stress in patients undergoing catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. These arrhythmias are among the most common cardiac rhythm disorders. Previous research suggests that psychological factors such as stress and personality traits may correlate their development and clinical course. Understanding these relationships may improve the effectiveness of patient care, particularly in terms of psychological support during the perioperat

Bimonthly mood-suicidal ideation dynamics in bipolar spectrum disorders: A dynamic structural equation modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs) experience a high burden of suicidal ideation (SI). Mania and depression are established correlates of suicidal ideation in BSDs, and externalizing traits (aggression, hostility, and impulsivity) are elevated in BSDs and linked to suicidal thinking and behavior more broadly. We tested temporal within-person mood-SI coupling and whether externalizing traits moderate these dynamics. METHODS: Participants were 434 adults with BSDs from the Prechter Longitudinal Study who completed bimonthly assessments over multiple years. Dynamic st

A modeling study to define guidelines for antigen screening in schools and workplaces to mitigate COVID-19 outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: In-person interaction offers invaluable benefits to people. To guarantee safe in-person activities during a COVID-19 outbreak, effective identification of infectious individuals is essential. In this study, we aim to analyze the impact of screening with antigen tests in schools and workplaces on identifying COVID-19 infections. METHODS: We assess the effectiveness of various screening test strategies with antigen tests in schools and workplaces through quantitative simulations. The primary outcome of our analyses is the proportion of infected individuals identified. The transmissi

Preanesthesia Teleconsultation via Voice Call Without Videoconferencing: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Teleconsultation, especially via voice call without videoconferencing, became widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic. The French High Council of Public Health prioritized cancer treatment to ensure continuity during the pandemic. Recently, French authorities prohibited teleconsultation via voice call without videoconferencing and reverted to a video format. This retrospective study assessed the efficiency of preanesthesia teleconsultation via voice call without videoconferencing by comparing ambulatory surgery failure rates for breast cancer surgery based on the type of preanesth

What's strength centrality got to do with it? Examining the stability of central symptoms across symptom ensembles and time in idiographic networks.

Network analysis is a popular method researchers use to characterize the structure of psychopathology and inform personalized treatments. Typically, applied researchers, based on network theory, interpret symptoms with the highest strength centrality as most important to network structure and represent amenable treatment targets. This study examines the stability of strength centrality in idiographic networks in a sample of participants with eating disorders (N = 26, 90-day assessment, M = 356.00 observations per person) and a second sample of participants with social anxiety disorder (N = 42,

Development and validation of the Women Autonomy Scale for measuring psychosocial freedom from conventional gender roles.

BACKGROUND: The concepts of masculinity and femininity have historically shaped gender roles, leading to inequality and gender-based discrimination. Women's autonomy, defined as the ability to make independent choices across various life domains, remains inadequately measured by existing scales. This study addresses this gap by developing and validating the Women Autonomy Scale (WAS). METHODS: The development and validation of the WAS involved four phases with a total of 2,252 adult women from Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan. These phases included exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirm

Psychosocial and personal predisposing factors of frostbite injury and associated amputation: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To date, systematic reviews of frostbite injuries predominantly focus on the treatment of frostbite, which narrows the scope of prevention and disregards the impact of frostbite-related predisposing factors. Comprehensively synthesizing relevant evidence to understand the psychosocial and personal predisposing factors to frostbite injury and related amputation would provide new insight into frostbite injury prevention. This review investigated the psychosocial and personal predisposing factors of frostbite injury and associated amputation. METHODS: Databases, including Embase, PubM

Frameworks describing the transition to open labour employment for persons with mild and moderate intellectual disability: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Persons with mild and moderate intellectual disability (MMID) have the right to participate in all aspects of society and be afforded equal opportunities to realise their full potential. However, it is a challenge for persons with MMID to find and maintain employment due to many different barriers. Currently, there is no contextually relevant framework in South Africa that considers the unique employment support needs and accommodation of persons with MMID, which can guide and inform the transition to employment interventions, strategies and national policy directives. METHODS A

Development and Functionality of a Parsimonious Digital Food Frequency Questionnaire for a Clinical Intervention among an Indigenous Population.

Nutrition-related chronic diseases are a major problem among Indigenous populations. Appropriate dietary intake assessment tools are needed for nutritional surveillance and intervention; however, tools designed to measure the habitual dietary intake of Indigenous persons are largely lacking. We developed a digital food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to measure habitual consumption among Australian Aboriginal adults and support personalized nutrition counseling. The primary contributors to energy, select nutrients, and inter-person variation (83 food groups) were identified from nationally repre

Knowledge and stigma of latent tuberculosis infection in Brazil: implications for tuberculosis prevention strategies.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) elimination requires treatment of millions of persons with latent M. tuberculosis infection (LTBI). LTBI treatment acceptance depends on population-wide TB knowledge and low stigma, but limited data are available on the relationship between stigma and knowledge. We assessed knowledge of TB disease and LTBI throughout Brazil and examined their association with TB stigma and incidence. METHODS: We performed a nationwide survey with multi-stage probability design through AmericasBarometer from April-May 2017; the sample was representative of Brazil at regional and n

Loneliness and the rate of motor decline in old age: the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a community-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Being alone, as measured by less frequent social interactions, has been reported to be associated with a more rapid rate of motor decline in older persons. We tested the hypothesis that feeling alone is associated with the rate of motor decline in community-dwelling older persons. METHODS: At baseline, loneliness was assessed with a 5-item scale in 985 persons without dementia participating in the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a longitudinal community-based cohort study. Annual detailed assessment of 9 measures of muscle strength and 9 motor performances were summarized in a comp
