Twenty-four-week hospital-based progressive resistance training on functional recovery in female patients post total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: After total knee arthroplasty (TKA) surgery, a decline in muscle strength is associated with a decrease in function. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effect of a further 24 weeks of hospital-based resistance training under supervision, and precise dose on knee functional recovery and daily activities for female TKA patients. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients who underwent unilateral primary TKA were allocated into either resistance training (RT) (n = 14) or control (CON) (n = 15) groups. All patients were assessed, with an isokinetic dynamometer, for hip and knee flexor an

Functional Capacity Evaluation in Upper Limb Reduction Deficiency and Amputation: Development and Pilot Testing.

Purpose To develop and pilot test a functional capacity evaluation (FCE) for individuals with upper limb absence (ULA) due to reduction deficiency or amputation, and to examine the relationship between FCE results and presence of musculoskeletal complaints (MSC). Method Five tests (overhead lifting, overhead working, repetitive reaching, fingertip dexterity, and handgrip strength) were selected and adapted if necessary. The newly developed FCE, called FCE-One-Handed (FCE-OH), was pilot tested in 20 adults individuals with ULA, and 20 matched controls. MSC were assessed via a questionnaire. Res

Habitual exercise correlates with exercise performance in patients with conotruncal abnormalities.

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), particularly maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), has been used to assess the outcome for patients with palliated congenital heart disease (CHD). Small studies correlating VO2max with noninvasive imaging measures of ventricular function have led to the hypothesis that VO2max reflects cardiac performance. In other settings, physical training is associated with increased VO2max. The authors hypothesized that habitual exercise correlates with VO2max to a greater degree than ventricular function in a relatively healthy cohort of patients with palliated CHD.

Bracing of stable shaft fractures of the ulna.

In the laboratory an ulnar osteotomy was performed in 10 cadaveric specimens, which included 5 distal-third junctions and 5 middle-third junctions. The interosseous membrane was left intact. Each specimen was rotated through full pronation and full supination. Displacement less than half shaft width was considered stable. The interosseous membrane was subsequently released 2 cm proximal and 2 cm distal to the osteotomy. Repeated pronation and supination range of motion documented gross displacement greater than half of the width of the shaft and was diagnosed as unstable. To evaluate this hypo

Estimating within-stride metabolic cost from stride-average data using autoencoders and expander networks.

INTRODUCTION: Biomechanical changes due to aging increase the oxygen consumption of walking by over 30%. When this is coupled with reduced oxygen uptake capacity, the ability to sustain walking becomes compromised. This reduced physical activity and mobility can lead to further physical degeneration and mortality. Unfortunately, the underlying reasons for the increased metabolic cost are still inadequately understood. While motion capture systems can measure signals with high temporal resolution, it is impossible to directly characterize the fluctuation of metabolic cost throughout the gait cy

RNAi of Mannosidase-Ia in the Colorado potato beetle and changes in the midgut and peritrophic membrane.

BACKGROUND: In addition to its role in the digestive system, the peritrophic membrane (PM) provides a physical barrier protecting the intestine from abrasion and against pathogens. Because of its sensitivity to RNA interference (RNAi), the notorious pest insect, the Colorado potato beetle (CPB, Leptinotarsa decemlineata), has become a model insect for functional studies. Previously, RNAi-mediated silencing of Mannosidase-Ia (ManIa), a key enzyme in the transition from high-mannose glycan moieties to paucimannose N-glycans, was shown to disrupt the transition from larva to pupa and the metamorp

Minimally invasive versus conventional sternotomy for Mitral valve repair: protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial (UK Mini Mitral).

INTRODUCTION: Numbers of patients undergoing mitral valve repair (MVr) surgery for severe mitral regurgitation have grown and will continue to rise. MVr is routinely performed via median sternotomy; however, there is a move towards less invasive surgical approaches. There is debate within the clinical and National Health Service (NHS) commissioning community about widespread adoption of minimally invasive MVr surgery in the absence of robust research evidence; implementation requires investment in staff and infrastructure. The UK Mini Mitral trial will provide definitive evidence comparing patie

Axillary artery injury from humeral neck fracture: a rare but disabling traumatic event.

Axillary artery injury from blunt trauma to the shoulder is uncommon. Fracture of the neck of the humerus is a rare cause of injury to the axillary artery. Four cases of axillary artery thrombosis from humeral neck fracture are reported. Each of the first 2 patients presented with a pulseless and acutely ischemic limb after a trivial fall. A repair of the axillary artery with saphenous vein interposition graft was performed in the first patient. The extremity was salvaged, but a residual radial and ulnar neurologic deficit persisted. The second patient presented with a pulseless insensate uppe

Modular hip exoskeleton improves walking function and reduces sedentary time in community-dwelling older adults.

BACKGROUND: Despite the benefits of physical activity for healthy physical and cognitive aging, 35% of adults over the age of 75 in the United States are inactive. Robotic exoskeleton-based exercise studies have shown benefits in improving walking function, but most are conducted in clinical settings with a neurologically impaired population. Emerging technology is starting to enable easy-to-use, lightweight, wearable robots, but their impact in the otherwise healthy older adult population remains mostly unknown. For the first time, this study investigates the feasibility and efficacy of using
