Joint association of sleep duration and physical activity with constipation: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep duration and physical activity (PA) may play a pivotal role in gastrointestinal functions. It remains unclear how they function in constipation. This study aims to assess the independent and combined associations of sleep duration and PA with the risk of constipation, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2010. METHODS: A total of 5590 (unweighted data) participants were included in the analysis. Sleep duration was categorised as insufficient (<7 hours/d), sufficient (7-8h/d), and excessive (>8 hours/d). Physical activity was conv

Chemo-physical loading of exosomes on porous titanium for improved soft tissue integration.

Establishing a durable soft tissue seal around dental implants is critical for preventing peri-implantitis, yet efficient loading of exosomes onto titanium surfaces remains challenging. Here, a dual-functional coating was developed on anodized porous titanium combining stem cell-derived exosomes with cefotaxime sodium via a chemo-physical loading strategy. Porous titanium surfaces exhibited 27% of pores equal/larger than 150 nm at 150 V along with enhanced hydrophilicity. Exosomes loaded via chemo-physical approach achieved the highest loading (30.8 μg/cm2), 2.6-fold higher than chemical graft

Beyond 'Walk Walk Walk': Barriers and facilitators of physical activity in individuals with claudication.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with claudication have significantly reduced capacity for walking, which leads to worsening prognosis and decline in overall health status. Basic walking advice is usually provided to individuals with claudication during their routine clinic visits, which has very limited efficacy, resulting in little or no change in physical activity behaviour. OBJECTIVE: This study explored barriers and facilitators to physical activity (PA) in individuals with claudication, using the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) and the Socioecological Model (SEM) for behavioural diagnosis. METHODS

Validation of the General Practice Physical Activity Questionnaire after severe COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a risk factor for severe COVID-19 and often worsens after hospitalisation. Clinicians need quick, accurate assessments to target interventions. We aimed to assess the validity of the General Practice Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPPAQ) in adults recovering 1 year after COVID-19 hospitalisation. METHODS: Post-hospitalisation for COVID-19, adults attended a 1-year-visit and completed the GPPAQ Physical Activity Index (PAI-4 active), 14-day wrist-worn accelerometry (moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) active) and other health outcomes. Validity was e

Development of a Realistic Physical Phantom for Laparoscopic and Robotic-Assisted Sacrocolpopexy Training and Associated.

OBJECTIVE: Robotic-assisted sacrocolpopexy is the gold standard for treating advanced pelvic organ prolapse, but its most critical step, presacral dissection, carries a significant risk of vascular and ureteral injury. Traditional training relies heavily on intraoperative exposure, yet no simulator currently provides an anatomically realistic, reusable, and cost-effective platform for practicing this high-risk procedure. METHOD: To address this gap, we developed a modular phantom designed for training in laparoscopic and robotic sacrocolpopexy procedures. A hierarchical task analysis was cond

Exploring obstacles to physical activity in inflammatory bowel disease: insights from a survey.

BACKGROUND: Regular physical activity is recommended in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and improves fatigue, psychological well-being and quality of life. However, many patients remain insufficiently active, and barriers to exercise are incompletely understood. This study aimed to explore patient-reported obstacles to physical activity and to assess awareness of and interest in Adapted Physical Activity (APA) programs for IBD. METHODS: A national cross-sectional survey was conducted from June to October 2021 among adults with IBD (≥18 years), recruited through a French patient association's

Physical restraint in the intensive care units: a narrative review of current practices and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Physical restraint remains common in the intensive care unit (ICU), but it is increasingly questioned following recent high‑quality evidence, particularly the R2D2‑ICU trial, which challenges the assumption that reducing restraint inherently improves short‑term neurological outcomes. MAIN BODY: Epidemiological data reveal significant variability in the prevalence of restraint use, which is influenced by a complex interplay of patient characteristics, caregiver factors, and systemic elements. The evidence on its effectiveness for mainly preventing the pulling out of tubes is questi

Preliminary effects of ayahuasca on mental and physical health: A systematic review of prospective studies.

Ayahuasca is a psychedelic plant brew that has been used in Central and South America for centuries. Recently, there has been an increase in "drug tourism" to places where ayahuasca is legally available as well as increased scientific interest in its potential mental and physical health benefits. Despite a growing body of research over the last decade, no studies to date have systematically synthesized the long-term health effects of ayahuasca. Thus, we conducted a systematic review of prospective ayahuasca studies that reported long-term health outcomes. A total of 18 studies were included in

Physical exercise training to increase cardiorespiratory fitness in people with spinal cord injury.

RATIONALE: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a key determinant of health, independence, and quality of life for people with spinal cord injury (SCI). It is therefore important to know whether, and to what extent, physical exercise training increases CRF in people with SCI. OBJECTIVES: To assess the short- (< 6 weeks) and long-term (> 6 weeks) effects (benefits and harms) of physical exercise training for improving CRF compared with no intervention in people with SCI. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE and three other databases to 9 December 2025, and six clinical trials registries

The relationship between physical activity and social anxiety in adolescents: a cross-lagged study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety (SA) is highly prevalent among adolescents and is closely linked to psychological wellbeing and social adjustment. Physical activity (PA) has been identified as an important protective factor; however, most existing studies rely on cross-sectional designs and focus on unidirectional effects, overlooking potential bidirectional dynamics between PA and SA. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether PA and SA exhibit stable bidirectional longitudinal associations in adolescents and to test their temporal stability and measurement invariance across three waves. MET
