COVID-19 Pandemic-Related Sleep and Mental Health Disparities among Students at a Hispanic and Minority-Serving Institution.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted nearly all sectors of our population, including college students, who continue to share disproportionate rate of disparities. In this study, we aimed to identity key sleep health characteristics, including markers for obstructive sleep apnea, as well as its relation to mental health, physical health, and academic performance. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design with online survey dissemination was used. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were conducted among a predominantly minority population. RESU

Health literacy of Dutch adults: a cross sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Relatively little knowledge is available to date about health literacy among the general population in Europe. It is important to gain insights into health literacy competences among the general population, as this might contribute to more effective health promotion and help clarify socio-economic disparities in health. This paper is part of the European Health Literacy Survey (HLS-EU). It aims to add to the body of theoretical knowledge about health literacy by measuring perceived difficulties with health information in various domains of health, looking at a number of competences

Incarceration as a Health Determinant for Sexual Orientation and Gender Minority Persons.

Incarceration is considerably more prevalent among sexual and gender minority persons (SGM) than among the general population. Once behind bars, they are at the greatest risk for health-related harms. Although a growing number of studies have assessed health disparities produced by mass incarceration, scholars are yet to systematically assess the health consequences of incarceration on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. We invite public health scholars to study the effects of incarceration on health in the SGM population and provide a roadmap to aid these research efforts. Fi

Engaging diverse underserved communities to bridge the mammography divide.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer screening continues to be underutilized by the population in general, but is particularly underutilized by traditionally underserved minority populations. Two of the most at risk female minority groups are American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) and Latinas. American Indian women have the poorest recorded 5-year cancer survival rates of any ethnic group while breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer mortality among Latina women. Breast cancer screening rates for both minority groups are near or at the lowest among all racial/ethnic groups. As with other health

Young adults with a 22q11.2 microdeletion and the cost of aging with complexity in a population-based context.

PURPOSE: Information about the impact on the adult health care system is limited for complex rare pediatric diseases, despite their increasing collective prevalence that has paralleled advances in clinical care of children. Within a population-based health care context, we examined costs and multimorbidity in adults with an exemplar of contemporary genetic diagnostics. METHODS: We estimated direct health care costs over an 18-year period for adults with molecularly confirmed 22q11.2 microdeletion (cases) and matched controls (total 60,459 person-years of data) by linking the case cohort to he

Oral health access and self-reported outcomes in patients with chronic intestinal failure requiring home intravenous support.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic intestinal failure (CIF) may be predisposed to poor oral health outcomes. This study explored the self-reported oral health status, function, and psychological impacts of oral health of adult patients with CIF, their access to dental care, and how these compare with the broader population. METHODS: All patients >18 years old receiving home intravenous therapies for CIF were invited to complete a self-reported questionnaire providing information on oral health status and access to oral health services. Collateral information was provided by treating clinicians

Initial report of the osteogenesis imperfecta adult natural history initiative.

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of the natural history of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) in adulthood should improve health care for patients with this rare condition. METHODS: The Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation established the Adult Natural History Initiative (ANHI) in 2010 to give voice to the health concerns of the adult OI community and to begin to address existing knowledge gaps for this condition. Using a web-based platform, 959 adults with self-reported OI, representing a wide range of self-reported disease severity, reported symptoms and health conditions, estimated the impact of

Does child abuse predict a population segment with large economic burden?

OBJECTIVES: The enormous societal and individual consequences of mental health disorders and detrimental health behaviours in the general population are of paramount concern. Many argue that 'prevention is the best cure', pushing for the implementation of early (preventive) interventions. Key questions regarding early interventions include which population segment to target for screenings and what information these screenings should focus on. In line with previous efforts, this study aimed to identify which population segment holds the majority (≥ 80 %) of different economically costly outcome

Editorial: 3rd Special Issue on behavior change, health, and health disparities.

This Special Issue of Preventive Medicine (PM) is the 3rd that we have organized on behavior change, health, and health disparities. This is a topic of critical importance to improving U.S. population health. There is broad scientific consensus that personal behaviors such as cigarette smoking, other substance abuse, and physical inactivity/obesity are among the most important modifiable causes of chronic disease and its adverse impacts on population health. Hence, effectively promoting health-related behavior change needs to be a key component of health care research and policy. There is also

Co-occurring conditions and racial-ethnic disparities: Medicaid enrolled adults on the autism spectrum.

Evidence suggests that autistic adults have higher odds of developing several co-occurring conditions, but less is known about disparities by race and ethnicity in this population. Using 2008-2012 Medicaid Analytic eXtract (MAX) data, we (i) identify the prevalence of co-occurring conditions among the population of autistic adult Medicaid beneficiaries compared to a matched sample of those without an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis, (ii) conduct logistic regression to estimate odds ratios for these health conditions predicted by an autism diagnosis, and (iii) estimate odds of having t

Common mental health conditions among navy divers: A brief report.

INTRODUCTION: A recent article reported on common mental health conditions among recreational scuba divers, and observed that the prevalence mirrored national population figures. This raised the question of the extent to which this might also be the case among professional divers. No data on commercial divers could be located; this paper presents the situation among navy divers. METHODS: Mental health survey data from 132 South African Navy divers were reviewed to describe the 12-month prevalence of common mood, anxiety, and alcohol misuse disorders. RESULTS: Prevalence of common mood and an

Optimising geographical accessibility to primary health care: a geospatial analysis of community health posts and community health workers in Niger.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the contribution of community health posts and community health workers (CHWs) to geographical accessibility of primary healthcare (PHC) services at community level and strategies for optimising geographical accessibility to these services. METHODS: Using a complete georeferenced census of community health posts and CHWs in Niger and other high-resolution spatial datasets, we modelled travel times to community health posts and CHWs between 2000 and 2013, accounting for training, commodities and maximum population capacity. We estimated additional CHWs needed

[Difficulties accessing abortion in legal termination contexts: high school students' narratives in a rural community in Mexico].

In this article, we analyze beliefs and practices among young high school students who seek out or consider the possibility of terminating a pregnancy. We selected students from a public school located in a rural, peasant community in México City, México. This is a constructivist ethnographic study based on in-depth interviews with 15 sexually-active women aged between 18 and 24 years. The interviews were recorded with participants' authorization and informed consent. Results indicate that social stigmas persist which affect the dignity of women who have chosen to have an abortion. However, Ca
