[Sensory demyelinating polyneuropathology as a manifestation of paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis associated to adenocarcinoma of the prostate].

INTRODUCTION: Different neurological disorders affecting different levels of the nervous system, both central and peripheral, are included among the paraneoplastic symptomologies of cancers, although their incidence is not well defined and varies according to the type of tumour. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 73 year old male patient who was admitted with a suspected polyneuropathy that had been developing for one month. The diagnosis was confirmed by electromyography. The only probable aetiology found in the course of a specific exploration was an adenocarcinoma of the prostate, with a

Time trends in cancer incidence and mortality in central Italy.

Time trends in cancer incidence and mortality represent an essential tool for monitoring the changes in population lifestyle and in the environmental risks and the effectiveness of the health system on cancer control in a specific area. During 1985-1997 82 506 malignant tumours were diagnosed in the Tuscany Cancer Registry, central Italy (about 1 200 000 inhabitants) and 54 979 cancer deaths registered in the period 1985-1999 by the Regional Mortality Registry were analysed. A statistically significant decrease in incidence was evidenced for stomach and gallbladder in both sexes, and for oesop

The vesical calculus.

Bladder calculi account for 5% of urinary calculi and usually occur because of foreign bodies, obstruction, or infection. Males with prostate disease or previous prostate surgery and women who undergo anti-incontinence surgery are at higher risk for developing bladder calculi. Patients with SCI with indwelling Foley catheters are at high risk for developing stones. There appears to be a significant association between bladder calculi and the formation of malignant bladder tumors in these patients. Transplant recipients are not at increased risk for developing vesical calculi in the absence of

Long-Term Oncologic Outcomes of Neoadjuvant Tumor-Directed Immunotherapy (PROSTVAC) Before Radical Prostatectomy for Localized Prostate Cancer: A Secondary Analysis of a Neoadjuvant Trial.

BACKGROUND: Biochemical recurrence (BCR) following radical prostatectomy (RP) occurs in 20%-40% of patients with localized prostate cancer. Neoadjuvant PROSTVAC has been shown to enhance T-cell infiltration into the tumor immune microenvironment, but whether these immunologic changes translate into improved long-term oncologic outcomes remains unknown. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This secondary analysis evaluated 26 patients from a Phase II neoadjuvant PROSTVAC trial who underwent RP. Patients received recombinant vaccinia-PSA-TRICOM priming followed by three fowlpox-PSA-TRICOM boosts before surger

A multicentric, single arm, open-label, phase I/II study evaluating PSMA targeted radionuclide therapy in adult patients with metastatic clear cell renal cancer (PRadR).

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in managing metastatic clear cell renal carcinoma (mccRCC) through antiangiogenic tyrosine kinase inhibitors and immunotherapy, there remains a demand for novel treatments for patients experiencing progression despite the use of these medications. There is currently no established standard treatment for patients receiving third therapy line. Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA) whose high expression has been demonstrated in metastatic aggressive prostate adenocarcinoma is also highly expressed in neovessels of various solid tumors including renal cell carc

THE PROFILE AND UROLOGICAL SERVICE NEEDS OF OUTPATIENTS ATTENDING A TERTIARY CENTRE IN WESTERN KENYA.

BACKGROUND: Urological service needs cut across varied ages and related conditions. The outpatient attendance is a reflection of the common conditions constituting the urological burden of a given population (1). The urological burden in turn has implications on access to care and treatment (2) since it will determine the skills needed, mode of treatment, amount of time and other resources required to meet these needs. There is, therefore, a need to have a local data base on the profile of our urological patients and their needs with regard to modes of treatment. This study strives to and meet

Mediastinal lymph node uptake in patients with prostate carcinoma on F18-choline PET/CT.

SUMMARY: Fluorine-18-methyl-choline (F18-choline) PET/computed tomography (CT) is routinely performed in our hospital for patients with significantly increased or rapidly increasing prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels to detect and localize recurrent prostate carcinoma. We observed uptake of this PET tracer in mediastinal lymph nodes in a significant number of patients. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of this finding and to determine whether it is correlated with tumour and nontumour-related aspects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 48 consecutive men (mean age: 65.6 yea

Primary carcinoid tumors of the urinary bladder and prostatic urethra: a clinicopathologic study of 6 cases.

Primary carcinoid tumors of the urinary bladder are exceedingly rare. Although they have been considered to be potentially malignant neuroendocrine neoplasms, some previously reported cases were associated with a carcinoma component that might have altered the outcome. Only 8 histologically well-documented cases of pure carcinoid tumors of the bladder and 1 of the prostatic urethra have been reported in the literature. In this study, we describe 6 additional primary pure carcinoid tumors arising in the bladder (5 cases) or prostatic urethra (1 case). Patients (4 male, 2 female) ranged in age f

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for radiation induced proctopathy in men treated for prostate cancer.

PURPOSE: Radiation proctitis is a common complication following external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy for prostate cancer. While 95% percent of radiation induced proctitis is temporary and self-limiting, up to 5% of patients experience toxicities that are refractory to conservative management. Hyperbaric oxygen has a well-defined role in treating chronic wounds, osteomyelitis, hemorrhagic cystitis and necrotizing fasciitis. We reviewed our experience with hyperbaric oxygen therapy for radiation induced proctitis in patients undergoing radiation treatment for prostate cancer. MATER
