Cardiac rehabilitation in patients with reduced left ventricular function in Germany: insights from the multicentre MEDIAN Heart Failure Registry.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) causes reduced functional capacity, impaired quality of life, and frequent rehospitalisation. Although guidelines recommend cardiac rehabilitation (CardRehab), referral rates remain low. The MEDIAN Heart Failure Registry evaluated short- and midterm outcomes of inpatient CardRehab in routine practice. METHODS: A prospective multicentre registry included 808 patients with clinically stable HFrEF (LVEF ≤ 40%) undergoing inpatient cardiac rehabilitation across 17 German centres (2019-2020). Clinical outcomes-6-min walk test, bicycl

Adverse childhood experiences and sarcopenia: a prospective study embedded in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), known to increase lifelong health risks, have recently been linked to frailty. This study examined whether ACEs predict the onset and progression of sarcopenia, a core component of the frailty phenotype. METHODS: We analysed 23 476 participants aged 45-85 years in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging with 3-year follow-up (49.5% female; mean age 62.1 ± 9.9). Eight ACEs were assessed using validated retrospective instruments. Associations between ACE count and incident sarcopenia (revised European Working groups on Sarcopenia in Older Peopl

Unravelling the biological nexus of smoking and postpartum depression: a meta-analysis and functional genomics approach.

PURPOSE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a prevalent psychological condition among birthing women. While several psycho-socio-economic and neurobiological factors influence its development, its relationship with smoking behavior and nicotine addiction remains largely inconclusive. METHODS: In this combinatorial study, we first evaluate the relationship between smoking and depressive behaviors in postpartum women using data extracted from pertinent primary epidemiological studies. Additionally, to discern the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying this association, we identified common ge

Post-radiotherapy xerostomia and quality of life in head and neck cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Radiotherapy for head and neck cancer frequently results in radiation-induced xerostomia, a chronic symptom that can persist long-term and compromise oral function and survivorship. METHODS: A cross-sectional, non-interventional survey was conducted using a mixed recruitment approach (department-based and nationwide online dissemination). Xerostomia prevalence, symptom characteristics, coping strategies, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) were assessed using a study-specific xerostomia questionnaire and the validated OHIP-G14 instrument. Overall, 253 questionnaires were

Can table tennis protect the aging brain? A systematic review and meta-analysis in neurodegenerative diseases.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Table tennis (TT) is an increasingly investigated intervention for supporting cognitive, motor, and psychosocial functions in older adults with neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and dementia. However, evidence remains fragmented, and the effect sizes and reliability of TT-based programs remain unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic search of four databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus) was conducted through June 30, 2025. Ten studies met inclusion criteria, with five eli

Evaluating an early Interdisciplinary Multimodal Assessment for Patients at Risk of Developing Chronic Pain: Results of a Multicentre RCT in Germany.

INTRODUCTION: Patients at risk of developing chronic pain are often significantly impaired in their daily, social and work activities. An early interdisciplinary multimodal assessment (IMA) includes a systematically integrated view of medical, psychosocial and functional factors to direct patients to need-based treatment services. This multicentre, randomised, controlled trial examined the effects of an IMA on preventing chronic pain and improving care for adult patients. METHODS: The intervention group (IG) received an IMA in accordance with standardised guidelines. The control group (CG) wa

Improvements in health-related quality of life in patients with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia after exagamglogene autotemcel.

Transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (TDT) can have negative impacts on a patient's health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Exagamglogene autotemcel (exa-cel) is a one-time, ex vivo CRISPR-Cas9 gene-edited cell therapy for TDT shown in a phase 3 clinical trial to result in transfusion independence in most participants. Here, we describe changes in patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures after exa-cel infusion in 54 participants (adults, n = 35; adolescents, n = 19), who had ≥16 months of follow-up. In adults, PRO measures included the EuroQol Quality of Life Scale-5 dimensions-5 levels of sever

Beyond Scars: Development and Validation of a Four-Dimensional Body Image Score for Women with Breast and Gynecological Cancers - A Tunisian Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Body image disturbances in breast and gynecological cancer survivors involve complex interrelationships between physical changes, sexuality, and self-esteem. Existing tools inadequately capture these multidimensional, cancer-specific concerns. This study developed and validated a Four-Dimensional Body Image Score for women with breast and gynecological Cancers (4D-BISC). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted (March-April 2025) across six Tunisian healthcare facilities. Women presenting with gynecological or breast cancers were included. Is there a superiority between arthrocentesis and stabilizing occlusal splint for the treatment of anterior disc displacement with reduction and intermittent block and anterior disc displacement without reduction in TMJ? Randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior displacement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc is a disorder in which the articular disc is dislocated from its correct position relative to the mandibular condyle and mandibular fossa. Traditionally, the initial treatment of disc displacements involves various conservative measures, including the use of a stabilizing interocclusal splint. However, in cases where there is associated limited mouth opening, as in the case of anterior disc displacement with reduction and intermittent block (ADDwRIB), and anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDw/oR), arthro

Mapping the neurodevelopmental predictors of psychopathology.

Neuroimaging research has uncovered a multitude of neural abnormalities associated with psychopathology, but few prediction-based studies have been conducted during adolescence, and even fewer used neurobiological features that were extracted across multiple neuroimaging modalities. This gap in the literature is critical, as deriving accurate brain-based models of psychopathology is an essential step towards understanding key neural mechanisms and identifying high-risk individuals. As such, we trained adaptive tree-boosting algorithms on multimodal neuroimaging features from the Lifespan Human

Outcomes 1 year after a first episode of psychosis in migrants to the Republic of Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Migration is a robust risk factor for developing a psychotic disorder, yet there is a paucity of research on the outcomes of migrants who develop a psychotic disorder. Identifying sub-groups within FEP cohorts who have a poorer outcome, could assist in the development and delivery of more targeted interventions. AIMS: There is a paucity of research on the outcomes of migrants who develop a psychotic disorder. This study aimed to evaluate a broad range of outcomes for those with a FEP who migrated to the Republic of Ireland, including: (i) symptomatic; (ii) functional; (iii) hospit

Experiences that matter in bipolar disorder: a qualitative study using the capability, comfort and calm framework.

BACKGROUND: When assessing the value of an intervention in bipolar disorder, researchers and clinicians often focus on metrics that quantify improvements to core diagnostic symptoms (e.g., mania). Providers often overlook or misunderstand the impact of treatment on life quality and function. We wanted to better characterize the shared experiences and obstacles of bipolar disorder within the United States from the patient's perspective. METHODS: We recruited 24 individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder and six caretakers supporting someone with the condition. Participants were involved in tr

Education for patients with limb loss or absence: Aging, overuse concerns, and patient treatment knowledge gaps.

The goals of vascular composite allotransplantation (VCA) for hand are to maximize functional status and psychosocial wellbeing and to improve quality of life. Candidates are carefully vetted by transplant programs through an extensive evaluation process to exclude those patients with contraindications and to select those that are most likely to attain functional or quality of life benefit from transplant. Patient choice for any treatment, however, requires that candidates be able to understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives before choosing to proceed. This study aimed to understand pat

The methylome in females with adolescent Conduct Disorder: Neural pathomechanisms and environmental risk factors.

Conduct Disorder (CD) is an impairing psychiatric disorder of childhood and adolescence characterized by aggressive and dissocial behavior. Environmental factors such as maternal smoking during pregnancy, socio-economic status, trauma, or early life stress are associated with CD. Although the number of females with CD is rising in Western societies, CD is under-researched in female cohorts. We aimed at exploring the epigenetic signature of females with CD and its relation to psychosocial and environmental risk factors. We performed HpaII sensitive genome-wide methylation sequencing of 49 CD gi
