Neurophysiological differentiation of Boder's dyslexia subtypes using harmonised quantitative EEG cross-spectra.

Developmental dyslexia is a heterogeneous disorder classically divided into distinct subtypes. Elena Boder's, 1973 model conceptualised reading and spelling as functions of distributed, interactive neural networks that require a dynamic interplay between visual-gestalt and analytic-auditory processes. Disruption of this interplay produces three main dyslexic subtypes-dysphonetic (DD), dyseidetic (DYD), and mixed (MD). These subtypes have also been described in Italian speakers, and recent research suggests they correspond to specific neurophysiological patterns. In this study, we analysed quan

Memory representations are flexibly adapted to orthographic systems: A comparison of English and Hebrew.

Across languages, speech unfolds in the same temporal order, constrained by the forward flow of time. But the way phonology is spatially mapped onto orthography is language-specific, ranging from left-to-right, right-to-left, and top-to-bottom, among others. While the direction of writing systems influences how known words are visually processed, it is unclear whether it influences learning and memory for novel orthographic regularities. The present study tested English and Hebrew speakers on an orthographic word-referent mapping task in their native orthographies (written left-to-right and ri

Professional Development in Phonological Awareness for Early Childhood Educators in Low-Income, Urban Classrooms: A Pilot Study Examining Dosage Effects.

Providing high-quality literacy instruction in early childhood may positively affect the long-term outcomes of children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Previous research has shown that educators are generally lacking in their own phonological awareness knowledge and skills which could negatively impact the provision of effective instruction in code-focused early literacy skills. The purposes of this pilot study were to examine the effects of differing dosages of professional development in phonological awareness on early childhood educators' (ECEs) own phonological awareness skills and instruc

Atypical function of auditory sensory gating in children with developmental dyslexia: Investigating its relationship with cognitive abilities.

Impairments of auditory processing are among frequent findings in dyslexia. However, it is unclear how auditory signals are gated from brainstem to higher central processing stages in these individuals. The present study was done to investigate auditory sensory gating in children with developmental dyslexia (DD), and to determine whether sensory gating correlates with performance on behavioural tasks. Auditory sensory gating at P50, N1 and P2 waves was evaluated in two groups including 20 children with DD and 19 children with typical reading development (TRD). Behavioural tests were used to ev

Anxiety and coping strategies among dyslexics in Ethiopia.

Individuals with dyslexia have been shown to have an increased risk for developing internalizing problems. Various studies have revealed the powerful role that culture plays in determining the type of anxiety and coping strategies adopted by various groups of individuals. However, compared to the vast number of studies conducted in individualistic cultures, knowledge on collectivistic cultures with respect to this issue is still limited. This study examined anxiety and coping strategies of children with and without dyslexia in Ethiopia, where the majority of its cultural dimensions could be re

Chromosome-level genome assembly of Babesia caballi reveals diversity of multigene families among Babesia species.

BACKGROUND: Babesia caballi is an intraerythrocytic parasite from the phylum Apicomplexa, capable of infecting equids and causing equine piroplasmosis. However, since there is limited genome information available on B. caballi, molecular mechanisms involved in host specificity and pathogenicity of this species have not been fully elucidated yet. RESULTS: Genomic DNA from a B. caballi subclone was purified and sequenced using both Illumina and Nanopore technologies. The resulting assembled sequence consisted of nine contigs with a size of 12.9 Mbp, rendering a total of 5,910 protein-coding gen

Cognitive workload affects ocular accommodation and pupillary response.

SIGNIFICANCE: Cognitive involvement in reading causes variations in the tonus of autonomic nerve system. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of short-term cognitive load on accommodation and pupils' absolute values and temporal variability in test persons performing three different types of tasks. PURPOSE: We aimed to show how cognitive tasks of different type and difficulty level affect accommodation and pupil behavior during a short time interval. METHODS: Participants (n = 58; mean age 16.4 years, SD = 0.56) performed reading from a 10-inch LCD screen placed at 40 cm distance.

Evaluating the Quality and Readability of Online Resources on Unspecified Kidney Donation.

BACKGROUND: Unspecified kidney donation (UKD) refers to transplantation from donors unrelated and unknown to the recipient. UKD has contributed to the expansion of the live donor pool in several countries. The United Kingdom Transplant Community has set maximizing UKDs as a priority. The Internet raises awareness and potentially influences the decision-making regarding UKD. This is the first study assessing the quality and readability of online material on UKD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Google was searched for the terms "kidney donation" and one of "unspecified," "altruistic," "non-directed," "a

Altered brain network topology during speech tracking in developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is often accompanied by altered phonological processing of speech. Underlying neural changes have typically been characterized in terms of stimulus- and/or task-related responses within individual brain regions or their functional connectivity. Less is known about potential changes in the more global functional organization of brain networks. Here we recorded electroencephalography (EEG) in typical and dyslexic readers while they listened to (a) a random sequence of syllables and (b) a series of tri-syllabic real words. The network topology of the phase synchronization o

Repeated series learning revisited with a novel prediction on the reduced effect of item frequency in dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia, a difficulty with acquiring fluent reading, has also been characterized by reduced short-term memory (STM) capacity, which is often operationalized with span tasks. The low performance of individuals with dyslexia (IDDs) in such tasks is commonly attributed to poor phonological memory. However, we suggest an alternative explanation based on the observation that many times the items that are used in spans tasks are high-frequency items (e.g., digit words). We suggest that IDDs do not enjoy the benefit of item frequency to the same extent as controls, and thus their perfo

Representations of conceptual information during automatic and active semantic access.

When we read a word or see an object, conceptual meaning is automatically accessed. However, previous research investigating non-perceptual sensitivity to semantic class has employed active tasks. In this fMRI study, we tested whether conceptual representations in regions constituting the semantic network are invoked during passive semantic access and whether these representations are modulated by the need to access deeper knowledge. Seventeen healthy subjects performed a semantically active typicality judgment task and a semantically passive phonetic decision task, in both the written and the

Remediation of a phonological representation deficit in Chinese children with dyslexia: A comparison between metalinguistic training and working memory training.

A form-preparation task in the language production field was adopted to examine output phonological representations in Chinese dyslexia and their susceptibility to training. Forty-one Chinese children with dyslexia (7-11 years old) and 36 chronological age controls completed this task. The controls demonstrated a marginally significant syllable facilitation effect (d = -0.13), indicating their use of syllable-sized phonological representations during speech production, while the group with dyslexia showed a significantly different pattern (d = 0.04), opposite to the direction of a facilitation

Developmental dyslexia and creativity: A meta-analysis.

Despite difficulties in reading and writing, some research suggests that dyslexia may be related to higher levels of creativity. However, this pattern is not consistently observed. The current research sought to ascertain whether individuals with clinically diagnosed dyslexia exhibit higher creativity than controls through a meta-analysis. Fourteen studies that assessed the creativity of 397 individuals with clinically diagnosed dyslexia and 453 controls were reviewed. Random-effects meta-analysis revealed an overall non-significant difference in creativity scores between those with dyslexia a

Language-Specific Effects in Response to Spelling Intervention in Italian and in English as an Additional Language.

According to a language-integrated view of spelling development, learning to spell involves the same language-learning skills across alphabetic systems. A prediction based on this view is that the same spelling training should be equally effective for learning to spell in a shallow (Italian, native language) or an opaque (English, additional language) orthography. We tested this prediction by teaching 6- to 9-year-old Italian children to use multiletter spelling units to spell words in Italian and English. The children were trained on the spelling of Italian words containing orthographic diffi

The rise and fall of rapid occipito-temporal sensitivity to letters: Transient specialization through elementary school.

Letters, foundational units of alphabetic writing systems, are quintessential to human culture. The ability to read, indispensable to perform in today's society, necessitates a reorganization of visual cortex for fast letter recognition, but the developmental course of this process has not yet been characterized. Here, we show the emergence of visual sensitivity to letters across five electroencephalography measurements from kindergarten and throughout elementary school and relate this development to emerging reading skills. We examined the visual N1, the electrophysiological correlate of vent

Dyslexia knowledge, perceived preparedness, and professional development needs of in-service educators.

The purpose of this study was to investigate New Jersey educators' dyslexia knowledge and misconceptions, professional development perceptions and needs, and perceived preparedness regarding teaching students with dyslexia. A second purpose was to investigate what factors predicted New Jersey educators' knowledge about dyslexia. A total of 705 in-service educators completed a survey about their dyslexia knowledge, perceived preparedness, and professional development perceptions. Participants had accurate overall knowledge about dyslexia, but some prevailing misconceptions were still present. T
