Hair root versus red cell individual phenotype in Sardinian heterozygotes for G6PD deficiency (Mediterranean type).

G6PD activity was assayed in 20 Sardinian heterozygotes for G6PD deficiency and related to that of LDH and MDH. One of these heterozygotes showed a deficient phenotype in all her follicles, while the remaining 19 had different proportions of deficient, intermediate, and normal follicles. This is in accordance with a previous estimate. Because of the broad fiducial limits at the 5% level and because of some developmental considerations, this value cannot be interpreted as indicative of the number of primordial cells for scalp epidermis at the time of X-chromosome inactivation, as previously sta

Synthesis of multi-channel fetal ECG using generative modeling.

Objective. Fetal electrocardiography (fECG) provides beat-to-beat cardiac information, offering the potential to improve the assessment of fetal response to uterine activity. However, the accuracy of fECG-derived cardiotocograms depends on signal quality. Scalp electrode recordings offer reliable fECG but are invasive and measurable only during labor. In contrast, non-invasive fECG measurements suffer from a low signal-to-noise ratio and maternal interference. To advance research on the use of non-invasive fECG, there is a need for large datasets with non-invasive multi-channel fECG recorded s

Ossifying Fibromyxoid Tumor of Soft Parts in the Head and Neck: A Systematic Review Addressing Surgical Management and Adjuvant Therapies.

Background: Ossifying fibromyxoid tumors (OFMTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with behaviors ranging from benign to malignant. Although most occur in the extremities and trunk, 9-13% are found in the head and neck, such as the oral cavity, scalp, and calvarium. Diagnosis is challenging due to their rarity and histological similarity to other neoplasms. This review synthesizes evidence on the clinical presentation, diagnostic features, and treatment outcomes of OFMTs in the head and neck, focusing on surgical management and adjuvant therapies. Methods: A systematic review was conducted accord

Sink-index: a network-based EEG marker for frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Frontotemporal dementia is a complex neurodegenerative illness characterized by a progressive deterioration in temperament, judgement, behaviour, and communication. Misdiagnosis and late diagnosis occur frequently due to the complexity of the phenotypes, overlaps of features with other neurodegenerative syndromes and psychiatric disorders, and ill-defined preclinical phases of the illness. Diagnosis relies on structural or functional brain imaging to show characteristic atrophy, hypoperfusion or hypometabolism profiles. The sensitivity of neuroimaging is lower in the earliest phases of the ill

Comment on a Multicenter Retrospective Descriptive and Analytical Study of 129 Cases of Trichoteiromania.

We have read Ramos Costa et al.'s publication "Trichoteiromania: A multicentre retrospective descriptive and analytical study of 129 cases" in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology, and comment on some critical issues related to the nosology, nomenclature, and methodology. The term trichoteiromania was originally coined for the rubbing of the hair due to an underlying psychiatric disorder without further specifications. Based on case observations of patients with trichoteiromania, it was later reported that in contrast to trichotillomania that represents an obsessive-compulsive di

Utility and rationale for continuous EEG monitoring: a primer for the general intensivist.

This review offers a comprehensive guide for general intensivists on the utility of continuous EEG (cEEG) monitoring for critically ill patients. Beyond the primary role of EEG in detecting seizures, this review explores its utility in neuroprognostication, monitoring neurological deterioration, assessing treatment responses, and aiding rehabilitation in patients with encephalopathy, coma, or other consciousness disorders. Most seizures and status epilepticus (SE) events in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting are nonconvulsive or subtle, making cEEG essential for identifying these otherwise

Retinoic acid drives hair follicle stem cell activation via Wnt/β-catenin signalling in androgenetic alopecia.

BACKGROUND: Depletion or permanent quiescence of the hair follicle stem cell (HFSC) pool underlies pathogenesis in androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Reactivation of quiescent HFSCs is considered an efficient treatment strategy for hair loss. The retinoic acid (RA) is critical to ensure stem cell homeostasis and function. However, little is known about whether RA regulates HFSC homeostasis. We aimed to investigate the impact of RA on HFSC homeostasis and the underlying mechanisms, in order to provide new potential targets for medical therapies of AGA. METHODS: Microdissected hair follicles from the

Comprehensive Review of Tinea Capitis in Adults: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, Clinical Presentations, and Management.

Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp and hair caused by dermatophyte molds, that most often affects children and may also affect adults. Previous estimates suggest that between 3% and 11% of all tinea capitis cases worldwide occur in adults, although updated epidemiological studies are needed to reassess the prevalence of tinea capitis in adult populations specifically. Postmenopausal adult women are most often affected by tinea capitis, with African American or Black women particularly at risk. Adults who experience crowded living conditions, who live in close proximity to animals

Hair follicle punch grafts in hard-to-heal wounds: A monocenter study and patient survey.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Chronic wounds present a growing challenge in the aging population, resulting in an extended course of treatment and an increased influx of patients with recalcitrant wounds seeking admission to hospitals. Furthermore, the general trend in patient care is toward simple and inexpensive treatment methods, feasible in an outpatient setting with little material costs. This retrospective case study aims to elucidate the operative procedure and outcomes associated with hair follicle unit transplantation utilizing punch grafts from the scalp for the management of hard-to-heal wou

Electrocochleographic frequency-following responses as a potential marker of age-related cochlear neural degeneration.

Auditory nerve (AN) fibers that innervate inner hair cells in the cochlea degenerate with advancing age. It has been proposed that age-related reductions in brainstem frequency-following responses (FFR) to the carrier of low-frequency, high-intensity pure tones may partially reflect this neural loss in the cochlea (Märcher-Rørsted et al., 2022). If the loss of AN fibers is the primary factor contributing to age-related changes in the brainstem FFR, then the FFR could serve as an indicator of cochlear neural degeneration. In this study, we employed electrocochleography (ECochG) to investigate t

Brain functional connectivity-based prediction of vagus nerve stimulation efficacy in pediatric pharmacoresistant epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Although vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a common and widely used therapy for pharmacoresistant epilepsy, the reported efficacy of VNS in pediatric patients varies, so it is unclear which children will respond to VNS therapy. This study aimed to identify functional brain network features associated with VNS action to distinguish VNS responders from nonresponders using scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) data. METHODS: Twenty-three children were included in this study, 16 in the discovery cohort and 7 in the test cohort. Using partial correlation value as a measure of whole-brain func

The Prevalence, Associated Factors, and Clinical Characterization of Malassezia folliculitis in Patients Clinically Diagnosed with Acne Vulgaris.

BACKGROUND: The clinical presentation of Malassezia folliculitis (MF) can imitate acne vulgaris (AV), making it difficult to distinguish between the two conditions. Moreover, MF can coexist with AV in the same patient. The incidence of MF in patients clinically diagnosed with AV may be underestimated. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, associated factors, and clinical characterization of MF patients diagnosed with AV. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred twenty new acne patients were questioned regarding general information, including age, sex, itchy symptoms, and past treatment hi

miR-140-5p in Small Extracellular Vesicles From Human Papilla Cells Stimulates Hair Growth by Promoting Proliferation of Outer Root Sheath and Hair Matrix Cells.

The application of dermal papilla cells to hair follicle (HF) regeneration has attracted a great deal of attention. However, cultured dermal papilla cells (DPCs) tend to lose their capacity to induce hair growth during passage, restricting their usefulness. Accumulating evidence indicates that DPCs regulate HF growth mainly through their unique paracrine properties, raising the possibility of therapies based on extracellular vesicles (EVs). In this study, we explored the effects of EVs from high- and low-passage human scalp follicle dermal papilla cells (DP-EVs) on activation of hair growth, a
