(Don't) panic in the scanner! How panic patients with agoraphobia experience a functional magnetic resonance imaging session.

Although functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has gained increasing importance in investigating neural substrates of anxiety disorders, less is known about the stress eliciting properties of the scanner environment itself. The aim of the study was to investigate feasibility, self-reported distress and anxiety management strategies during an fMRI experiment in a comprehensive sample of patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia (PD/AG). Within the national research network PANIC-NET, n=89 patients and n=90 controls participated in a multicenter fMRI study. Subjects completed a retrosp

The impact of hospitalization on clinical assessments of suicide risk.

OBJECTIVE: Clinicians' assessments of patients' suicide risk at admission to and discharge from a psychiatric hospital were examined to learn how clinical estimates of risk changed over the course of hospitalization and to identify which demographic and clinical characteristics were associated with higher estimates of risk at admission and discharge. METHODS: Seventy-one treating physicians evaluated risk of self-harm of 241 patients at admission to and discharge from a short-term inpatient unit. Risk within the next week (short-term risk) and within the next year (long-term risk) was estimat

Relationship of sexual and physical abuse to pain description, coping, psychological distress, and health-care utilization in a chronic pain sample.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the association of physical/sexual abuse to pain description, coping, psychological distress, and health-care utilization in a heterogeneous sample of chronic pain patients. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, retrospective design was used. Patients were categorized as abused (n = 22) or nonabused (n = 58) based on responses to a valid and reliable sexual/physical abuse questionnaire. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pain description (Visual Analog Scale measures of pain intensity and frequency, and the McGill Pain Questionnaire); coping ability and attributional style (Functional In

Femoral Nerve Catheters Improve Home Disposition and Pain in Hip Fracture Patients Treated With Total Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Opioids have been the mainstay of treatment in the physiologically young geriatric hip fracture patient undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). However opioid-related side effects increase morbidity. Regional anesthesia may provide better analgesia, while decreasing opioid-related side effects. The goal of this study was to examine the effect of perioperative continuous femoral nerve blockade with regards to pain scores, opioid-related side effects and posthospital disposition in hip fracture patients undergoing THA. METHODS: Twenty-nine consecutive geriatric hip fracture patient

A feasibility pilot study on the use of complementary therapies delivered via mobile technologies on Icelandic surgical patients' reports of anxiety, pain, and self-efficacy in healing.

BACKGROUND: Complementary therapies (CT), such as relaxation technique, massage, guided imagery, and accupuncture have shown to benefit patients undergoing surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of using audio relaxation technique (ART), music intervention (MI), nature video application with music (NVAM), and nature video application without music (NVA) delivered via mobile technologies in a clinical setting. Secondary, the effects of ART, MI, NVAM and NVA on patients' state anxiety, pain perception, and perceived self-efficacy in healing were determined. METHODS: A r

The American College of Nurse-Midwives' home-based lifesaving skills program: a review of the Ethiopia field test.

The Home-Based Lifesaving Skills program (HBLSS) is a family- and community-focused, competency-based program that aims to reduce maternal and newborn mortality by increasing access to basic lifesaving measures within the home and community and by decreasing delays in reaching referral facilities where obstetric complications, such as postpartum hemorrhage and newborn asphyxia, can be managed. HBLSS was field tested in rural southern Ethiopia where over 90% of births take place at home with unskilled attendants. The program review assessed 1) the performance of HBLSS-trained guides; 2) managem

Management and leadership competencies in Emergency Medicine specialist training: a review with implications for African programmes.

INTRODUCTION: Management and leadership are core competency domains in emergency medicine (EM) specialist training worldwide, yet they remain less clearly articulated and less consistently assessed than clinical skills, particularly in African and other low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings. METHODS: Review of peer-reviewed and grey literature. Electronic searches of PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, ERIC, and Web of Science were conducted from database inception to March 2026, supplemented by hand-searching of five journals and six organisational repositories. From Past to Present: Transformation of Food Safety Management and Food Safety Culture in the California Almond Industry.

The California almond industry underwent a remarkable transformation in food safety management and culture following outbreaks of salmonellosis associated with the consumption of raw almonds in 2000-2001 and 2003-2004. However, limited studies have examined these changes from a longitudinal perspective. This study documents the transformation of food safety management in the California almond industry over an 18-year period, explores indicators of change in food safety culture, identifies the key factors driving these changes, and examines the determinants of industry-wide technology adoption.

Reasons for introducing self-intermittent urinary catheterization and long-term outcomes in individuals with multiple sclerosis: a retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with multiple sclerosis (IwMS) frequently suffer from bladder disorders, and intermittent self-catheterization (ISC) is often part of management. The aim of this study was to determine the main reason for ISC introduction, and assess the outcome of this management at short and long term. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective study included all IwMS who learned ISC between 2018 and 2024. Data were collected upon ISC introduction (T0), 6-12 months later (T1), and at the last follow-up (T2). RESULTS: One hundred fifty-nine participants were classified according to the reason fo

Methotrexate toxicity in psoriasis-A multicentric retrospective study.

Even today methotrexate (MTX) remains the backbone of psoriasis management in dermatological practice. The widespread usage as well as over the counter availability of drug in India has led to frequent incidents of overdosing, resulting in toxicity. However, there is a lack of large size, comprehensive study in literature emphasizing upon reasons behind drug toxicity, clinical manifestations, and various management aspects. The present study aims to evaluate risk factors, clinical features, and suggest best management protocol based upon our experience in the management of MTX toxicity. A mult

Wilms tumor is the most common pediatric extracranial solid tumor in Peru. Preoperative tumor rupture is an uncommon complication, and its management varies depending on the severity. If the bleeding is self-limited, does not affect hemodynamic stability, or is controlled with medical management, surgery may be delayed until after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. This report describes a three-year-old male patient with a right Wilms tumor extending into the ipsilateral renal vein, accompanied by bulky retroperitoneal lymph nodes and multiple bilateral pulmonary metastases.
