Mobility for sex work and recent experiences of gender-based violence among female sex workers in Iringa, Tanzania: A longitudinal analysis.

Female sex workers are highly mobile, which may influence their risk of experiencing physical and sexual violence. However, there remains a paucity of research, particularly longitudinal, from Sub-Saharan Africa exploring mobility and gender-based violence among female sex workers. To address this gap, this study examined the longitudinal relationship between work-related mobility and recent experience of physical or sexual gender-based violence from a client or partner among female sex workers in Iringa, Tanzania. A secondary data analysis was conducted using baseline and 18-month follow-up d

Sexual mixing patterns among social networks of HIV-positive and HIV-negative Beijing men who have sex with men: a multilevel comparison using roundtable network mapping.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are of immediate concern in China's HIV epidemic. In 2008, approximately 2.5-6.5% of China's eight million MSM were HIV positive, while MSM represented 11% of all new HIV cases. Two factors that will in-part determine HIV-transmission dynamics among MSM, are sexual mixing patterns and the social networks which shape them. Sexual mixing patterns and social networks of Chinese MSM, however, remain poorly understood with little refined data available. One reason is that stigma discourages disclosure of names and identifiers to researchers. Using an alternative netw

Motivations of Pregnant Women Initiating HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Within Routine Antenatal Clinics Enrolled in a Randomized Trial in Western Kenya.

Vertical HIV transmission remains a public health challenge in high-burden areas. This cross-sectional study analyzed baseline data from 600 pregnant women without HIV in western Kenya who initiated preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) between January 2022 and July 2023. We examined associations between participant characteristics, self-perceived HIV risk, and PrEP initiation motivations. Overall, 36.3% reported high HIV risk perception. High self-perceived risk was associated with having multiple sexual partners, high empiric risk scores, intimate partner violence (IPV), and anxiety. Unplanned preg

Childhood Trauma and Dissociative Intimate Partner Violence.

The present study assesses childhood abuse/neglect as a predictor of dissociative intimate partner violence (IPV) among 118 partner-abusive men. One third (36%) endorsed dissociative IPV, most commonly losing control (18%), surroundings seeming unreal (16%), feeling someone other than oneself is aggressing (16%), and seeing oneself from a distance aggressing (10%). Childhood physical abuse/neglect predicted IPV-specific derealization/depersonalization, aggressive self-states, and flashbacks to past violence. Childhood emotional abuse/neglect predicted derealization/depersonalization, blackouts

A national audit on the management of pelvic inflammatory disease in UK genitourinary medicine clinics.

The prompt and effective treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) may reduce the risk of complications such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy and pelvic pain. We conducted a national audit to investigate the treatment of women diagnosed with PID and associated rates of partner notification in genitourinary (GU) medicine clinics during 2008 and compared our results with the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) 2005 national guideline. Among a total of 1,105,587 female attendees, national data showed 18,421 cases of PID diagnosed in GU medicine clinics, giving an incidence

Determinants of genital wart case detection rates among STD clinic attendees in Athens, Greece.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To report significant sociodemographic and behavioral outpatient characteristics associated with the diagnosis of genital warts. METHODS: Cross-sectional hospital-based study (1990-96). RESULTS: Genital warts (n = 2988, 51.2%) represent the leading sexually transmitted disease (STD) among 5831 consecutive symptomatic Greek and foreign immigrant STD outpatients. In Greek heterosexuals a low rate of partner change was the main patient characteristic at diagnosis (median: one partner in the past 6 months). Lower detection rate and riskier behavior characterized immigra

Risk factors for Chlamydia trachomatis infection of the cervix: a prospective study of 2000 patients at a family planning clinic.

Two thousand and thirty-four patients attending a family planning clinic were tested for the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection of the cervix. The incidence of infection was 17.5%. Pregnant patients had a higher incidence of infection (23%), than nonpregnant patients (16.8%; p less than 0.05), and in the former this was not related to age. In nonpregnant women age was found to be an important determinant of infection rate, 22% in the 20 and under age group, and 9% in those over 25 years (p less than 0.01). There was a higher rate of infection in those with abnormal cervical smears, an

Human vomeronasal anatomy indexes sexual behavior and reproductive vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: The biological relevance of the human vomeronasal organ (VNO) remains unresolved, and it is often considered a vestigial structure lacking sensory function. However, the VNO exhibits marked interindividual anatomical variability that may reflect underlying reproductive or neuroendocrine biology rather than chemosensory signaling. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 102 adults (77 females, 25 males) recruited from a clinical setting between 2024 and 2025. High-resolution nasal endoscopy was used to assess VNO size, vascularity, and pit morphology, which were combined i

Sexual minority status modifies the association between HIV risk behavior and prevalent mood or anxiety disorders in British Columbia, Canada.

PURPOSE: This study aimed at determining to what extent sexual minority status modifies the association between HIV risk behavior and prevalent mood or anxiety disorder diagnosis in British Columbia (BC), Canada, using a population-based survey. METHODS: This analysis was based on the cross-sectional 2013-2014 Canadian Community Health Survey. The sample was restricted to respondents in BC with valid responses to the survey items considered. A multivariable logistic model, where the behavioral HIV risk score exposure was nested into the sexual minority status modifier, estimated the odds of h

Health associations for male survivors of unwanted and non-consensual sex.

Literature has established that men with non-consensual sexual experiences exhibit a higher likelihood of engaging in high-risk sexual behaviors; however, previous research does not explore men with unwanted sexual experiences, nor their sexual and general health outcomes. Weighted data from the 2011-2017 National Survey of Family Growth included men aged 18-49 years who ever experienced oral, vaginal, or anal sex by partners of any gender (N = 10,763). The Pearson χ2 test compared the sociodemographic of men with or without a history of unwanted or non-consensual sex. Logistic regressions wer
