Potentiometric titrations were used to estimate the surface charge density of SBA-15 mesoporous silica in different salt solutions. It was found that surface charge depends both on cation type, following a Hofmeister series (Cs(+) < Guanidinium(+) < K(+) < Na(+) < Li(+)), and on salt concentration (in the range 0.05-1 M). Micropatterned hydrogel stamps soaked in appropriate chemical etchants can imprint various types of micro- and nanoarchitectures into metals, conductive oxides, semiconductors, glasses, and crystals. Localized etching is mediated by a reaction-diffusion process initiated from the stamp microfeatures and gives lateral resolution down to approximately 300 nm. The method is well suited for the rapid prototyping of small-scale devices including multilevel microfluidic systems and curvilinear optical elements.

Accidental burial in sand is a tragically unrecognized risk associated with a popular childhood recreational activity. We describe 4 boys, aged 10 to 13 years, who were accidentally buried by sand. One boy died after his self-made tunnel in a sandbox collapsed. This work evaluated the flushing efficiency of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) using the co-surfactant of non-ionic ethoxylated sorbitan ester (Tween) and oilphilic sorbitan monooleate (Span 80), which formed more hydrophobic micelles than Tween alone. We report on experiments to characterize internal magnetic field gradients that are caused by magnetic susceptibility differences between the solid phase and the fluids filling the pore space. Our measurements focus on low-field relaxometry of brine and oil in sandstones from various reservoirs around the world. Our results show the need to understand the dependence of internal field gradients on diffusion length, pore size- and fluid distribution in order to predict the impact of internal gradients on the interpretation of NMR experiments.
