Posterior circulation in 82 children of "moyamoya" disease are studied. Two aspects of "moyamoya" disease, (ie; occlusive lesion of cerebral vessels and the development of abnormal vascular network as collateral channel,) are also detected in the vertebrobasilar system. Among 82 cases, 49 cases showed the occlusion of posterior cerebral artery at their quadrigeminal segment. Twenty-three showed the more proximal occlusive lesions. Vertebral artery occlusion were found in 3 cases. As the occlusive lesion progresses, abnormal vascular network at the posterior portion of skull base developed. Thi

Trigeminal neurinomas account for about 0.2 per cent of all intracranial tumors and for about 2 to 3 per cent of all intracranial neurinomas. Trigeminal neurinomas occur most frequently in persons in the middle decades of life, with the highest incidence between the ages of 38 and 40 years. They show no sex predilection. Although very rare, trigeminal neurinomas are of considerable interest to the neurotologist because of their relation to the temporal bone, skull base, sphenoid and maxillary sinuses, nasopharynx, infratemporal fossa, and, in rare instances, the oral cavity. In addition to pro

Oculodento-osseous dysplasia (ODOD) has been recognised in three South African patients from two kindreds of Dutch descent. Their ocular, nasal, dental and digital stigmata resembled those of previously reported cases, but their cranial hyperostosis and mandibular overgrowth were of much greater degree. In addition, the two survivors had serious neurological complications consequent upon spinal cord compression at the base of the skull and calcification of the basal ganglia. Two of the patients were the product of marriages between a pair of brothers and a pair of sisters, who were themselves

INTRODUCTION: For brain maturity assessment of infants aged above 6 months, T2-weighted MRI scans are recommended. Prior to automated brain tissue analysis, skull stripping is typically applied. However, most skull stripping tools neither focus on T2-weighted scans nor on pediatric cohorts. Here, we present the evaluation results of seven common skull stripping tools in a comparably large pediatric cohort.
METHODS: This study is based on 199 T2-weighted scans of children under the age of 5 years retrospectively acquired from the clinical routine at Hannover Medical School. We established a ma

The Gamma Knife Check software is an FDA approved second check system for dose calculations in Gamma Knife radiosurgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and the stability of the commercial software package as a tool for independent dose verification. The Gamma Knife Check software version 8.4 was commissioned for a Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion and a 4C unit at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in May 2012. Independent dose verifications were performed using this software for 319 radiosurgery cases on the Perfexion and 283 radiosurgery cases on the 4C units. Th

BACKGROUND: To develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted model for detecting skull fractures in neonates and infants using plain radiographs, enhancing diagnostic accuracy while minimizing radiation exposure.
METHODS: A retrospective dataset of skull X-rays from 1,184 patients with head trauma (2010-2021) was collected. Images underwent preprocessing, including background removal, Gaussian blurring, binarization, and CLAHE-based contrast enhancement. Three convolutional neural network architectures (ResNet-50, DenseNet-121, EfficientNet-B5) were trained, with DenseNet-121 optimized usi

BACKGROUND: Limited retrospective data suggest that dural venous sinus thrombosis (DVST) in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients with skull fractures is common and associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Prospective data accurately characterizing the incidence of DVST in patients with high-risk TBI are sparse but are needed to develop evidence-based TBI management guidelines.
METHODS: After obtaining institutional approval, 36 adult patients with TBI with skull fractures admitted to an Australian level III adult intensive care unit between April 2022 and January 2023 were prospe

We investigated spatial relations of the pterygoid hamuli to the hard palate on 65 skull bases: 31 disarticulated sphenoidal bones from the newborn up to 9 years of age, 19 skulls of adult skeletons (21-59 age group), and 15 skulls aged 60-100 years. We measured: (a) width of the hard palate in the choanal region, (b) length of the hamulus, (c) inclination of the hamulus from the perpendicular line, and (d) distance between the tips of the contralateral hamuli. The width of the hard palate in the choanal region was smallest in children (mean +/- standard deviation, 21.5 +/- 2.6 mm) compared wi

INTRODUCTION: Although cutting-edges antineoplastic therapies increase survival in children with malignancies, the optimal surgical strategy to address associated comorbidities such as chronic tympanic membrane perforation is still poorly documented. The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of type I tympanoplasty in pediatric cancer survivors who received chemo and/or radiotherapy to the skull and to identify potential associated risk factors.
METHODS: This case-control study included medical records review of oncologic patients (age <21) treated at the same Academic medical oncolog

Craniosynostosis is characterized by the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures, which can lead to abnormal skull shape and restricted skull growth. Although most cases are present in isolation, some are associated with genetic syndromes, such as Pfeiffer, Muenke, Couzon, Apert, and others, which increases the complexity of care. Today, a spectrum of surgical options to treat craniosynostosis are available and range from traditional open cranial vault remodeling to newer and less invasive suturectomy-based techniques. Which procedure is offered to a patient depends on not only the spe

Patient positioning and head fixation are two of the most important aspects of cerebral aneurysm surgery. These procedures require an accurate understanding of the anatomy of the scalp and skull and of the process for approaching aneurysms. We describe the basics of this procedure in frontotemporal craniotomy, which is most frequently used in cerebral aneurysm surgery, with a focus on head fixation using the MAYFIELD three-pin skull clamp(Integra LifeSciences). The insertion sites of the head pins should be avoided in areas with thin bone, such as the frontal sinus and temporal squama, and jus

A detailed understanding of the relationship between the ethmoidal sinus and the intracranial cavity is essential to prevent intracranial penetration during orbital surgery. The authors analyzed 10 postmortem orbits with their adjacent skull bases of 5 Asian cadavers (3 males and 2 females; mean age of 80 years at death). After removing all orbital contents, skull and brain, the medial orbital wall, ethmoidal cells, and ethmoidal roof were also removed. From the intracranial cavity view, the ethmoidal roof was situated just lateral to the cribriform plate. From the orbital view, the location o

Breech babies were shown to have a smaller mean biparietal diameter (BPD) neonatally compared with that of a matched group of vertex babies. This was due to a mild skull deformation which occurred in at least one-third of 100 consecutive term breech babies examined. Features of this skull deformation (dolichocephaly, a prominent occiput with a suboccipital shelf, an elongated face and a parallel-sided head) constitute the 'breech head'. The caliper-determined occipitofrontal/biparietal diameter ratio (OFD/BPD) in these newborn infants was consistently above 1 . 30. This ratio, when calculated

We have reviewed our experience in the radiographic and ophthalmologic evaluation of 1001 patients with symptoms suggesting the presence of a pituitary, prolactin-secreting adenoma. Twenty-seven patients had abnormal or suspicious radiographic examination of the sella turcica. Twenty-two of those had hyperprolactinemia. In only one instance was an abnormality noted on polytomography that was not seen on a conventional four-view study of the skull. Based on these findings, a four-view plain conventional radiographic assessment of the skull suffices as a screening procedure in patients with amen

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Rhabdomyosarcoma and Langerhans cell histiocytosis are malignant lesions that can affect the skull base with similar radiographic characteristics on CT and MR imaging. We hypothesized that location within the temporal bone determined radiographically can provide useful adjunctive information in differentiating these distinct neoplasms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified patients with Langerhans cell histiocytosis and rhabdomyosarcoma by using an imaging data base and International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision codes at a tertiary care academic medical ce

Cephalometric analysis is frequently used in orthodontics for diagnostic purposes, in order to evaluate the positional relationship of the upper and lower jaw to the cranial base, as well as to objectively asses the way dental arches relate to one another and to the skeletal base. As with other dento-skeletal anomalies, the normal growth process can induce changes in these parameters. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the skeletal and dental changes that occur in growing patients with Angle Class II division 2 malocclusion. The study also focuses on analyzing and comparing several param

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis is not common in our community but can occur as a result of severe facial trauma or significant connective tissue disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and psoriatic arthritis, and unfortunately as a result of iatrogenic causes. Ankylosis surgery is aimed at gap arthroplasty and mobilization of the joints. However, the removal of the bony ankylosis and the production of a gap between the ramus of the mandible and the base of the skull is often difficult because of the size of the ankylosis and the anatomy on the inner aspect of the mandible. BACKGROUND: Earlier investigations suggest that the morphologic features of patients with lambdoid synostosis include ipsilateral occipital flattening, an ipsilateral mastoid prominence, downward cant of the posterior skull base to the affected side, and contralateral hemifacial deficiency. These features are absent in patients with deformational plagiocephaly. The authors hypothesize that significant differences in craniofacial morphology exist between patients with lambdoid synostosis and those with deformational plagiocephaly.
METHODS: Craniometric measurements were performed on patients w

Numerous complications following impacted third molar extractions have been described previously. Among these are swelling, infection, subdermal hematomas, nerve injuries, injuries to adjacent teeth and mandibular fractures. The parapharyngeal space is a funnel-shaped space with its base located at the base of the skull and its apex near the hyoid bone. It is bounded medially by the superior constrictor muscle and the tonsillar fossa and laterally by the medial pterygoid muscle, the mandibular ramus, the deep lobe of the parotid gland and the posterior belly of the digastric muscle. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Jugular foraminal stenosis (JFS) or atresia (JFA) with collateral emissary veins (EV) has been documented in syndromic craniosynostosis. Disruption of EV during surgery can produce massive hemorrhage. Our purpose was to describe the prevalence of prominent basal emissary foramina (EF), which transmit enlarged EV, in syndromic craniosynostosis. Our findings were correlated with phenotypic and molecular diagnoses.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records and imaging examinations of 33 patients with syndromic craniosynostosis and known fibroblast growth factor receptor (F
