Cervical spine metastasis from adrenal pheochromocytoma.

Metastatic tumours are the most common type of tumours in the spine of which only 10% occur in the cervical spine. We report a rare presentation of metastatic pheochromocytoma of the cervical spine which was successfully treated operatively. Adequate precautions should be taken during surgery as the tumour is very vascular. Radiotherapy is useful in the treatment of residual tumour.

Treatment Strategy for Impending Instability in Spinal Metastases.

BACKGROUD: Determining surgical management of a spinal metastasis is difficult owing to the involvement of multiple factors. The spinal instability neoplastic score (SINS) system is a reliable tool to evaluate instability in spinal metastases. The intermediate SINS (scores 7-12) indicates impending instability, which makes it difficult to determine the proper treatment strategy. In this study, we aimed to compare the initial status and treatment outcomes of a conservative group versus an operative group among patients with spinal metastases with an intermediate SINS of 7-12. Further, we evalua

Role of MRI in Acute Spinal Cord Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The clinical indications and added value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the acute phase of spinal cord injury (SCI) remain under investigation. Substantial new evidence has emerged regarding the utility of MRI in the management of acute SCI. Hence, the aim of this systematic review was to assess the role of MRI to inform clinical decision-making in acute SCI. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. Database searches (Medline, Embase, CENTRAL) were conducted from inception to March 2026 to identify studies addressing six key questions: di

Comparison of canine umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cell transplantation times: involvement of astrogliosis, inflammation, intracellular actin cytoskeleton pathways, and neurotrophin-3.

Canine mesenchymal stem cells (cMSCs) derived from umbilical cord blood represent a potentially useful source of stem cells for therapy. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different transplantation times of cMSCs after spinal cord injury (SCI). A total of 21 dogs were subjected to SCI by balloon-induced compression of the first lumbar vertebrae for 12 h. Of the 21 dogs, 12 were divided into four groups of three according to the time of stem cell (1 × 10(6)) transplantation at the injury site: control no treatment, 12 h, 1 week, and 2 weeks. The remaining 9 animals were negativ

Bilateral open-door cervical expansive laminoplasty with hydroxyapatite spacers and titanium screws.

OBJECT: The authors report a simple method for bilateral open-door cervical expansive laminoplasty in which hydroxyapatite (HA) spacers are secured by titanium screws. A biomechanical study was also conducted to confirm the strength of the screw fixation. METHODS: A unilateral posterior approach was used to allow preservation of the posterior supporting elements (the posterior tension band) until the laminae were cut at the base. A bilateral open-door expansive laminotomy was then performed in standard fashion. Appropriate-sized HA spacers were selected, held with a specially designed holder,

The authors report on a prospective multicenter study with regard to the operative treatment of acute fractures and dislocations of the thoracolumbar spine (T10-L2). The study should analyze the operative methods currently used and determine the results in a large representative collective. This investigation was realized by the working group "spine" of the German Trauma Society. Between September 1994 and December 1996, 682 patients treated in 18 different traumatology centers in Germany and Austria were included. Part 2 describes the details of the operative methods and measured data in stan

Extensive thoracic spontaneous epidural hematoma presenting with position-induced transient paraplegia: successful conservative management in the resource limited settings.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is a rare condition with an estimated incidence of 0.1 per 100,000 individuals. It is usually characterized by sudden spinal pain followed by rapidly progressive neurological deficits. Surgical treatment is generally indicated if a patient presents with neurological deficits. We report a case of SSEH presenting with neurological deficits relieved after position change, recovering without surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 73-year-old woman developed sudden, severe pain in the neck, back, lumbar region, and abdomen while sitting

Prophylactic Radiotherapy Of MInimally Symptomatic Spinal Disease (PROMISSeD): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Early palliative/pre-emptive intervention improves clinical outcomes and quality of life for patients with metastatic cancer. A previous signal-seeking randomized controlled trial (RCT) demonstrated that early upfront radiotherapy to asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic high-risk osseous metastases led to reduction in skeletal-related events (SREs), a benefit driven primarily by subgroup of high-risk spine metastasis. The current RCT aims to determine whether early palliative/pre-emptive radiotherapy in patients with high-risk, asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic spine metastase

Surgical Outcomes in Selective Laminectomy and Conventional Double-Door Laminoplasty for Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy.

Several postoperative problems have been reported in conventional cervical laminoplasty (C-LAMP), such as loss of cervical curvature, sagittal imbalance, and loss of range of motion (ROM). Selective laminectomy (S-LAM) is a less invasive procedure that may prevent the problems associated with conventional C-LAMP. In this study, the authors prospectively compared neurological outcomes and radiological parameters in C-LAMP and S-LAM for the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy. Fifty-three patients were enrolled, with 25 patients receiving conventional double-door C-LAMP and 28 patients

[Melanocytoma and meningeal melanocytosis, similar but different lesions].

BACKGROUND: Meningeal melanomatosis is an extra-axial well-encapsulated malignant tumour with diffuse meningeal growth and dark coloration (due to high melanin contents), while meningeal melanocytoma is the focalized benign variant. Melanocytic lesions may be secondary to melanoma or be histologically benign, however, their diffuse nature makes them impossible to cure. Melanocytosis is a diffuse tumour that can form solitary extra-axial tumours, which invades the parenchyma and presents signs of malignancy with increased mitosis and Ki67, observed in 1 to 6% of immunopathological exams. Cystic dilation of a ventriculus terminalis. Case report and review of the literature.

The ventriculus terminalis (VT) is a small ependyma-lined cavity within the conus medullaris that is in direct continuity with the central canal of the spinal cord. Cystic dilatation of the ventriculus terminalis on its own is an extremely rare pathological event in adults whose pathogenesis is uncertain. VT has been described in children as a normal developmental phenomenon. These lesions are often diagnosed incidentally during imaging and are in most cases asymptomatic, especially in children. Symptomatic dilatation of VT in adults is a rare condition with 61cases being reported to date. Sym

Holocord spinal epidural abscess: Case report and literature review.

Holocord spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is a rare condition. To our knowledge, five cases of SEA have been reported so far, and no consensus has been made on the treatment yet. In this article, we report a case of holocord SEA and review literature to further understanding of SEA. The advent of antibiotic treatment and the recognition of surgical debridement have been important in searching for alternatives to recovery, so the patient was treated surgically together with systemic antibiotics. The patient remained neurologically stable and continued to be clinically in good condition without any

Movement disorders and other motor abnormalities in adults with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Movement abnormalities are frequently reported in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), but knowledge in this area is scarce in the increasing adult population. We report on five individuals illustrative of movement disorders and other motor abnormalities in adults with 22q11.2DS. In addition to an increased susceptibility to neuropsychiatric disorders, seizures, and early-onset Parkinson disease, the underlying brain dysfunction associated with 22q11.2DS may give rise to an increased vulnerability to multiple movement abnormalities, including those influenced by medications.
