Optimizing Development of Plain Language Summaries of Clinical Trial Results.

BACKGROUND: Plain language summaries (PLSs) play a crucial role in communicating complex clinical trial information to patients and the public. Due to the European Union Clinical Trials Regulation (EU CTR) 536/2014 requirement to disclose PLSs in parallel with the technical results, clinical trial sponsors will need to develop such summaries swiftly and efficiently, while avoiding potential obstacles. Their creation can be challenging for sponsor company stakeholders who typically use highly technical, scientific language. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: This manuscript describes the PLS devel

A survey on optimization and machine learning-based fair decision making in healthcare.

Unintended biases introduced by optimization and machine learning models (a core area of artificial intelligence) are of great interest to medical researchers and professionals. Bias in healthcare decisions can cause patients from vulnerable populations (e.g., racially minoritized, low-income, or living in rural areas) to have lower access to resources and inferior outcomes, exacerbating societal unfairness. In this paper, we present a systematic review of the literature regarding fair decision making in healthcare until April 2024. We screened 801 unique references, identifying 114 articles w

Can Technology Use Alleviate Workforce Needs in Finnish Assisted Living Services? A Convergent Mixed-Methods Study of Automatic Medicine Dispensers and Night-Time Monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Workforce needs are growing in older people care, exacerbated by the aging population. Technological solutions offer potential means to address this challenge. However, their effects on work and worktime management remain unclear, especially in the setting of assisted living services. Our aim was to assess the potential of two established technologies, automatic medicine dispensing and night-time monitoring, in alleviating workforce needs in Finnish assisted living facilities. METHODS: The effects of the two technologies on workforce needs were studied using a convergent mixed-met

Cross-disciplinary "General Learning Objectives" for postgraduate medical training: Prioritisation of five competency domains using a Delphi process.

OBJECTIVE: The Swiss postgraduate education regulations stipulate that teaching be guided by cross-disciplinary "General Learning Objectives" (GLOs) based on the CanMEDS roles. Notwithstanding these regulations, teaching activities and performance criteria for GLOs are scarcely evident in postgraduate training programmes. The primary aim of this study was to determine the reasons why too little emphasis is placed on GLOs in postgraduate training programmes. A secondary aim was to define a reduced set of needs-based cross-disciplinary competencies that trainees should develop during their postg

Perceived Value of Certification for Nurses and Nurse Managers: Updated 2026 White Paper.

INTRODUCTION: Since the first orthopaedic nurse certification (ONC) examination in 1988, more than 16,000 nurses have earned the ONC credential, with nearly 5000 currently certified in orthopaedic nursing, advanced practice, or nurse navigation roles. Certification validates expertise in musculoskeletal care and supports improved clinical practice, professional identity, and organizational performance. METHODS: The Orthopaedic Nurses Certification Board survey included a representative sample of over 300 orthopaedic-certified nurses. Survey items were based on the Perceived Value of Certifica

A review of sleep-related indicators measured in large population-based cohort studies in Japan.

BACKGROUND: How to measure sleep has been the primary focus of sleep epidemiological studies. To address the lack of systematic evaluation of sleep-related indicators, we reviewed large population-based cohort studies in Japan, focusing on whether sleep was measured subjectively or objectively. METHODS: PubMed, Ichushi-Web, and official cohort study websites were systematically searched from January 1, 2004, to March 31, 2025, to identify studies that measured sleep-related indicators as exposures or outcomes in 19 large population-based cohorts in Japan. Data on sleep measurement methods and

Co-developing a survey on public understanding of sustainable clinical research: A study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Clinical research is essential for medical advancement but contributes to carbon emissions through activities such as travel, data management, and laboratory processes. As healthcare systems move towards net-zero targets, there is a growing need to understand public awareness of and attitudes towards environmental sustainability in clinical research. Public and patient involvement (PPI) can enhance the relevance and acceptability of research, however there is limited evidence on how best to co-develop tools to assess public understanding of sustainable clinical research. METHODS:

Managing radiological technologists' impatience: testing the effectiveness of a group work intervention.

Impatience is closely associated with stress, anxiety, and tension, all of which can adversely affect task performance and decision-making. Previous research analyzing incident reports from radiological technologists (RTs) has shown that impatience contributes to incidents regardless of years of experience. Based on these findings, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a group-work intervention designed to regulate feelings of impatience. A group-work session titled "Coping with Impatience and Its Effects" was conducted with 16 RTs at Kyoto University Hospital (mean experience: 5.2

Virtual & mixed reality fatigue questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Virtual Reality (VR) generates an artificial environment in which users interact with computer-generated scenarios and sounds. Using devices such as headsets and motion sensors, users are immersed in a simulated world. Augmented reality (AR) is an interactive overlay of the real environment that provides an additional wrapper over the environment, and the user experiences an immersive and interactive environment. In Mixed reality (MR), VR and AR elements are combined; computer graphics interplay with real objects, allowing users to interact with virtual and physical objects at the

De-implementation of routine laboratory testing in a surgical intensive care unit: lessons from a two-phase quality improvement initiative.

Excessive laboratory investigations in the intensive care units (ICUs) contribute to increased risk of line infections, iatrogenic anaemia, environmental burden and healthcare costs without clear mortality benefit. Despite Choosing Wisely recommendations advocating clinically indicated testing, overutilisation of laboratory tests in ICUs remains common. In our surgical ICU, ordering practices were driven by unclear consultant expectations, reassurance-seeking, junior doctor inexperience, ease conferred by order sets and limited awareness of value-based care.We conducted a two-phase quality imp

Why do Canadians host refugees? A sequential explanatory mixed-methods study protocol.

Refugee homestay hosting, in which private citizens or permanent residents provide temporary accommodation and informal support to refugees and displaced persons, is increasingly used as a community-based response to housing insecurity, social isolation, and settlement barriers. Although prior scholarship has examined refugee experiences within hosting arrangements, comparatively little is known about the motivations, readiness, attitudes, empathy, satisfaction, and advocacy behaviours of hosts, or about the organizational supports required to sustain hosting in Canada. The study is informed b

Perfectionism and School Non-Attendance Reasons in Adolescents: A Latent Profile Analysis: Perfectionism and School Non-Attendance.

INTRODUCTION: Limited prior knowledge exists regarding perfectionism and other relevant educational variables, such as the wide spectrum of School Attendance Problems. However, perfectionism has been related to somatic complaints and symptoms, school burnout, and negative emotionality. Therefore, this study analyzes the association between this personality trait and reasons for school non-attendance, using a person-centered approach. METHOD: The sample consisted of 681 students aged 12 to 18 (M = 14.98, SD = 1.84), of whom 295 were boys, 374 were girls, and 12 self-identified as others. They

How many infection control staff members are needed in acute care hospitals? A Delphi approach.

INTRODUCTION: The Dutch recommendation on infection prevention and control (IPC) staffing in acute care hospitals from 2007 is outdated due to evolving hospital care, including shorter admissions, more complex and day-care procedures, more vulnerable patients, increasing antimicrobial resistance, and enhanced regulatory demands. Therefore, an updated staffing norm for IPC is needed. METHODS: Minimum weekly hours required for IPC activities was determined by a Delphi method across three model hospitals: academic, large non-academic, and small non-academic. Four questionnaire rounds were conduc

Gastroenterologist's Guide to Assess for Alcohol Use.

PURPOSE: Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) carries significant health care burden as it is the leading indication for hospitalization and liver transplantation among patients with chronic liver disease. Key challenge with ALD remains a delay in its diagnosis during the asymptomatic stage warranting the need for improved screening for heavy alcohol use. Further, given the impact of alcohol use in steatotic liver disease, accurate assessment of alcohol use is paramount. The aim of this study is to review the challenges associated with alcohol assessment, importance of subjective assessment,

From awareness to action: building monitoring capacity for tobacco and nicotine industry interference-experience from the JA PreventNCD project.

Industry interference remains a major barrier to effective tobacco control. WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Article 5.3 obliges Parties to protect public health policies from industry influence, yet systematic monitoring of interference is often lacking. The emergence of new nicotine products and actors further complicate implementation and monitoring. Within Joint Action PreventNCD, we assessed monitoring and information exchange practices related to tobacco and nicotine industry interference in five European countries (Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, and Slovenia).
