Neural Correlates of Social Exclusion and Childhood Trauma in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Introduction Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a cluster B personality disorder that is characterized by altered perceptions of self-image, affect, and behavioral difficulties, especially a fear of being abandoned or rejected. Individuals with BPD engage in impulsive behaviors such as substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, self-harm, excessive spending, or binge eating. Beyond the individual level, BPD has a damaging effect on the integrity and safety of societies. Subjects with borderline personality disorder have various types of traumatic childhood experiences and social exclusion.

Effects of Different Conditioning Activities on the Sprint Performance of Elite Sprinters: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: Postactivation performance enhancement (PAPE), which refers to the phenomena associated with the attainment of enhanced performance in sport-specific tasks after a conditioning activity, is an important objective of warming-up practices in many sports. This is even more relevant for sprinters, as potential increases in sprinting speed will directly influence their competitive results. This systematic review with meta-analysis evaluated the effects of different PAPE protocols (ie, using plyometrics, strength-power exercises, and resisted/assisted sprints) on the sprinting performance (

Language, theory of mind and cognitive skills in Arabic-speaking children with and without autism: Evidence from network and cluster analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social interactions, social communication, and repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Previous studies have reported mixed findings regarding the links between language (i.e., phonology, morphosyntax, lexicon, and pragmatics), theory of mind (ToM), executive functions (EFs), and central coherence measures in children with ASD. METHODS: A total of 163 Palestinian-Arabic-speaking children aged 4-11 participated: 76 with ASD and 87 with typical language development (TLD). The children`s phonological, morpho

Toward ECG-based analysis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: a novel ECG segmentation method for handling abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities in impulse propagation and cardiac repolarization are frequent in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), leading to abnormalities in 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs). Computational ECG analysis can identify electrophysiological and structural remodeling and predict arrhythmias. This requires accurate ECG segmentation. It is unknown whether current segmentation methods developed using datasets containing annotations for mostly normal heartbeats perform well in HCM. Here, we present a segmentation method to effectively identify ECG waves across 12-lead HCM ECGs. METHODS: W

External validation of a low fidelity dry-lab platform to enhance loupes surgical skills techniques for hypospadias repair.

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias repair is an index pediatric urology procedure that requires trainee familiarity with surgical loupes. A previous low-fidelity, 6-step curriculum was proposed that deconstructed the most important steps of loupe surgery. We expanded on this curriculum with an intermediate-fidelity silicone hypospadias model and designed an abbreviated version of the 6-step curriculum to precede the hypospadias repair simulation. OBJECTIVE: To assess the validity of our prior, low-fidelity conceptual model using the metric of improved performance on the intermediate-fidelity silicone

Differentiating characteristics of EMG signals in pediatric muscle tone disorders in the aspect of evaluating postural control.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities in muscle tone, such as postural hypotonia, can significantly affect motor development and postural control in children, often presenting with unclear origins and subtle clinical manifestations. These disturbances may also be associated with broader musculoskeletal dysfunctions. The presented research aims to examine whether electromyographic signal analysis can support the objective evaluation of muscle tone abnormalities in children. METHODS: Electromyography (EMG) signals were recorded from the sternocleidomastoid and rectus abdominis muscles during

Knee Arthroscopy: A Simulation Demonstrating the Imperial Knee Arthroscopy Cognitive Task Analysis (IKACTA) Tool.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality and cadaveric simulations are expensive and not readily accessible1. Innovative and accessible training adjuncts are required to help meet training needs. Cognitive task analysis (CTA) has been used extensively to train pilots and surgeons in other surgical specialties2-6. However, the use of CTA tools within orthopaedics is in its infancy. Arthroscopic procedures are minimally invasive and require a different skill set compared with open surgery. Residents often feel poorly prepared to perform this in the operating room because of the steep learning curve associate

First-order basis of second-order temporal loss in amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental visual disorder characterized by monocular visual impairment due to abnormal binocular experience in early childhood, with first-order (luminance-defined) and second-order (contrast-defined) processing deficits. While first-order temporal perception deficits in amblyopia are well-documented, the nature of second-order temporal deficits remains unclear, particularly whether they stem from intrinsic extrastriate dysfunction or secondary effects of first-order spatial impairments. This study investigated temporal perception deficits in anisometropic a

Why vital signs observations are delayed and interrupted on acute hospital wards: A multisite observational study.

BACKGROUND: Vital signs monitoring is key to identifying deteriorating hospital patients. However, adherence to monitoring protocols is limited, with observations frequently missed or delayed. Previous studies of interruptions and delays to vital signs observations have been descriptive, with none attempting to conceptualise the types of tasks that are prioritised over vital signs observations. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to explore how nursing teams perform vital sign observations on acute hospital wards and conceptualises which types of work delay or interrupt them. DESIGN: Non-participant

Electronic oral health surveillance system for Egyptian preschoolers using District Health Information System (DHIS2): design description and time motion study.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is a major global health issue affecting millions of children. Mitigating this problem requires up-to-date information from reliable surveillance systems. This enables evidence-based decision-making to devise oral health policies. The World Health Organization (WHO) advocates the adoption of mobile technologies in oral disease surveillance because of their efficiency and ease of application. The study describes developing an electronic, oral health surveillance system (EOHSS) for preschoolers in Egypt, using the District Health Information System (DHIS2

Functional connectivity modeling of consistent cortico-striatal degeneration in Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a complex neuropsychiatric phenotype. In a recent meta-analysis we identified core regions of consistent neurodegeneration in premanifest HD in the striatum and middle occipital gyrus (MOG). For early manifest HD convergent evidence of atrophy was most prominent in the striatum, motor cortex (M1) and inferior frontal junction (IFJ). The aim of the present study was to functionally characterize this topography of brain atrophy and to investigate differential connectivity patterns formed by consistent cortico-

Visual noise effect on reading in three developmental disorders: ASD, ADHD, and DD.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Developmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Developmental Dyslexia (DD) are reported to have more visual problems, oral language difficulties, and diminished reading skills in addition to their different diagnostic features. Moreover, these conditions also have increased internal noise and probably an impaired ability of external noise filtering. The aim of the present study was to compare the reading performance of these groups in the presence of external visual noise which disrupts the automatic rea

Language Models for Multilabel Document Classification of Surgical Concepts in Exploratory Laparotomy Operative Notes: Algorithm Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Operative notes are frequently mined for surgical concepts in clinical care, research, quality improvement, and billing, often requiring hours of manual extraction. These notes are typically analyzed at the document level to determine the presence or absence of specific procedures or findings (eg, whether a hand-sewn anastomosis was performed or contamination occurred). Extracting several binary classification labels simultaneously is a multilabel classification problem. Traditional natural language processing approaches-bag-of-words (BoW) and term frequency-inverse document freque

Single-Trial Dynamics of Competing Reach Plans in the Human Motor Periphery.

Contemporary motor control theories propose competition between multiple motor plans before the winning command is executed. While most competitions are completed before movement onset, movements are often initiated before the competition has been resolved. An example of this is saccadic averaging, wherein the eyes land at an intermediate location between two visual targets. Behavioral and neurophysiological signatures of competing motor commands have also been reported for reaching movements, but debate remains about whether such signatures attest to an unresolved competition, arise from aver

Edge-Enabled Real-Time Gait Assessment for Degenerative Spinal Disease Using Wearable Inertial Sensors.

Gait analysis is used in the diagnosis, rehabilitation, and longitudinal monitoring of degenerative spinal disease (DSD). However, conventional gait assessment commonly depends on subjective visual observation or laboratory-based motion-capture systems, which restrict accessibility and routine clinical use. This study presents an edge-enabled real-time gait analysis framework for DSD using two ankle-worn inertial measurement units (IMUs). The proposed framework integrates causal gait-event detection with spatiotemporal gait estimation, including stride length, stride height, stride frequency,

The Influence of Music Reading on Spatial Working Memory and Self-Assessment Accuracy.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Previous research has suggested that Western musicians, who generally demonstrate proficiency in reading musical scores, exhibit superior performance in visuospatial working memory tasks compared to non-musicians. Evidence indicates brain activation in regions such as the left inferior parietal lobe and the right posterior fusiform gyrus during music reading, which are associated with visuospatial processing. This study aimed to explore how musical training influences spatial working memory and to examine the relationship between self-assessment accuracy and cognitive pe
