Electronystagmographic tracings were correlated with the histopathologic findings in the peripheral vestibular system of 66 temporal bones of 34 patients who complained of dizziness. Although some findings (e.g., spontaneous nystagmus, unilaterally reduced caloric response, and directional preponderance) seemed to have doubtful value in localizing vestibular system disease, other findings indicated a peripheral site of the vestibular lesions. Bilaterally reduced or bilaterally absent caloric responses were consistently associated with pathologic changes in the peripheral vestibular system. Sim

BACKGROUND: Intratympanic (IT) therapy is a common procedure to deliver drugs into the cochlear for the treatment of inner ear diseases. Round window niche veil (RWNV) is an extra anatomical barrier potentially impending drug delivery. However, RWNV's identification is neglected, and its effect on IT efficacy awaits investigation.
METHODS: Patients with unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), undergoing temporal bone HRCT examination and initiating IT therapy were enrolled and followed up for 30 days. Participants were independently assessed and identified into RWNV+ and RWNV- b

BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the reliability of panoramic imaging in assessing styloid process (SP), using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as the reference standard. CBCT is preferred for assessing SP as it displays the dimensions and morphology of the SP without superimpositions.
METHODS: SP elongation, calcification type (type 1: elongated, type 2: pseudoarticulated, type 3: segmented, and type 4: distant), and calcification pattern (calcified outline, partially calcified, nodular, and completely calcified) were evaluated on both panoramic and CBCT images of the same 407 pat

OBJECTIVE: The superior semicircular canal dehiscence is the most well-known otic capsule dehiscence. However, several other dehiscences affect the semicircular canals, cochlea, and vestibule. Our research aimed to examine the frequency, distribution, and correlation between radiologic otic capsule dehiscence in patients exhibiting symptoms of third window syndrome. Additionally, we proposed a new classification system for semicircular canal dehiscence.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, we included cases who applied to the Otolaryngology Department of our university hospital between Janua

To investigate the possible association of pathogenic mutations of SLC26A4 and computerized tomography (CT) phenotypes of inner ear, and explore the feasibility of using the method of gene sequence analysis. A total of 155 patients with bilateral hearing loss carrying SLC26A4 gene mutations were further subjected to high-resolution temporal bone CT and thyroid B ultrasound tests. The potential relationship between the pathogenic mutations of gene and the CT phenotypes were analyzed. As a result, 65 patients (41.9%, 65/155) carried SLC26A4 gene mutations, and 27 cases were detected with pathoge

Routine non-contrast material-enhanced head CT is one of the most frequently ordered studies in the emergency department. Skull base-related pathologic entities, often depicted on the first or last images of a routine head CT study, can be easily overlooked in the emergency setting if not incorporated in the interpreting radiologist's search pattern, as the findings can be incompletely imaged. Delayed diagnosis, misdiagnosis, or lack of recognition of skull base pathologic entities can negatively impact patient care. This article reviews and illustrates the essential skull base anatomy and com

Estimation of total number of neurons in the spiral ganglion (SG) at various ages and their functional status is important as these neurons are constantly exposed to noise and other environmental factors that may lead to neuronal loss with aging due to excitotoxic damage. Parvalbumin (PV) is a calcium-binding protein (CBP), found in highly metabolically active neurons. It helps in buffering cytosolic calcium, which is essential for neurotransmitter release. The neurons in the adult human SG express PV more strongly than other CBPs like calbindin and calretinin. These CBPs can be used as signat

BACKGROUND: Eagle's syndrome is characterized by the symptoms of recurrent throat pain, pharyngeal foreign body sensation, dysphagia, referred otalgia, and neck pain. The treatment for Eagle's syndrome can be pharmacologically, surgically, or both. The surgical management consists of two major procedures: the transoral approach or the extraoral-cervical approach.
CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old patient with a severe cervical pain on the left side was evaluated with no defined diagnosis. During physical examination, an elongated styloid process could be palpated and with CT scan image, the Eagle's

BACKGROUND: Gout is a common metabolic disorder that leads to elevated serum uric acid levels and deposition of urate crystals in tissues, leading to conditions such as arthritis and neuropathy.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Although the prevalence of gout has been increasing during the past two decades, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement is rare, with only 10 reports in the English-language literature. The authors present a rare case of gout involving the TMJ in a 51-year-old woman. They also review reported cases of gout involving the TMJ, including the clinical, radiographic and microscopic dia

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant neoplasm of the bone. Rarely, osteosarcomas occur at sites other than the bone, so-called extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS). ESOS is a rare malignancy that accounts for approximately 1% of all tissue sarcomas and present most commonly as a large soft tissue mass in the extremities. The patient was an 18-year-old Japanese man who presented with a stony hard mass in the left submandibular region. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy could not be performed due to the firmness of the mass. The patient underwent left selective neck dissection after enlarge

Post-lingual deafness is a stressful condition which is rendered even more painful by the sudden emotional isolation that the patient suffers. Cogan's syndrome is a rare autoimmune cause for post-lingual deafness characterized by non-syphilitic interstitial keratitis, bilateral audio vestibular deficiencies and systemic vasculitis. World over very few cases of Cogan's syndrome have been reported. Cochlear implant surgery in such a patient is a challenging but highly satisfactory experience due to the multitude of clinical problems the patient faces. This demands a proper work up, meticulous su
