Gastric cancer in patients with gastric atrophy and intestinal metaplasia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIM: Intestinal metaplasia (IM) and gastric atrophy (GA) are precancerous lesions in the stomach. There is a large debate on natural course of these lesions and surveillance strategy in these patients. This meta-analysis was aimed to find the most appropriate follow up and the rate of progression from IM and GA to GC. METHODS: This meta-analysis is followed and reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Electronic databases including EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science databases, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library were searched u

Severe war-related trauma and personality pathology: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to war-related trauma has long been recognised to have an adverse effect on mental health. We attempted to investigate whether people who have clinically significant personality-related problems 15 years after a war are more likely to have been exposed to severe war-related trauma than those who do not have significant personality difficulties. METHODS: A case -control study was conducted in southern Croatia, fifteen years after the 1991-1995 war. We recruited 268 participants: 182 cases who scored positively on the International Personality Disorder Examination scale (IP

Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma of maxillary sinus: case report with review of literature.

ABSTRACT: COVID-19 led to a massive shutdown of businesses in the second quarter of 2020. Estimates from the Current Population Survey, for example, indicate that the number of active business owners dropped by 22% from February to April 2020. We provide the first analysis of losses in sales among the universe of businesses in California using administrative data from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Losses in taxable sales average 17% in the second quarter of 2020 relative to the second quarter of 2019 even though year-over-year sales typically grow by 3-4%. We find th

First year of ongoing invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b outbreak among middle-aged people who use drugs and people who experience homelessness in Hamburg, Germany, September 2024 to August 2025.

We report an ongoing outbreak of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease among people who use drugs (PWUD) and people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in Hamburg, Germany. Between 1 September 2024 and 31 August 2025, 20 adult Hib cases were reported. The cases were either residents of Hamburg (16/20) or stayed in Hamburg during the exposure period (4/20). Whole genome sequencing identified a link between 18 cases (median age 50 years (range 26-77); six female, 12 male, three died). An epidemiological link (i.e. drug consumption in the open drug scene) could be established for 15 of

Immune system adaptation during gender-affirming testosterone treatment.

Infectious, inflammatory and autoimmune conditions present differently in males and females. SARS-CoV-2 infection in naive males is associated with increased risk of death, whereas females are at increased risk of long COVID1, similar to observations in other infections2. Females respond more strongly to vaccines, and adverse reactions are more frequent3, like most autoimmune diseases4. Immunological sex differences stem from genetic, hormonal and behavioural factors5 but their relative importance is only partially understood6-8. In individuals assigned female sex at birth and undergoing gende

Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriage among homeless population in Lisbon, Portugal.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal carriage is a major risk factor for infection, namely among populations in the community with inherent prompting factors, such as the homeless. In Portugal, there are no data on S. aureus/MRSA nasal carriage among the homeless community. A total of 84 homeless individuals living in Lisbon (34 with no permanent address and 50 living in shelter) were nasally screened for S. aureus/ MRSA. All isolates were characterized to determine antimicrobial susceptibility and clonal type. A total of 43 (51.2%) S. aureus carriers were identified, inclu

The effectiveness of a group-based acceptance and commitment additive therapy on rehabilitation of female outpatients with chronic headache: preliminary findings reducing 3 dimensions of headache impact.

OBJECTIVE: Examine whether acceptance and commitment additive therapy is effective in reducing the experience of sensory pain, disability, and affective distress because of chronic headache in a sample of outpatient Iranian females. BACKGROUND: Chronic headaches have a striking impact on sufferers in terms of pain, disability, and affective distress. Although several Acceptance and Commitment Therapy outcome studies for chronic pain have been conducted, their findings cannot be completely generalized to chronic headaches because headache-related treatment outcome studies have a different emph

The association or otherwise of the functional somatic syndromes.

OBJECTIVE: To review the evidence for overlap in the phenomenology of the Functional Somatic Syndromes (FSS). The FSS show considerable comorbidity, leading some to suggest they may be aspects of the same disorder. METHODS: We conducted a selective review of peer-reviewed articles on the co-occurrence of FSS symptoms and diagnoses. RESULTS: Considerable evidence of overlap was found at the level of symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and clinical diagnoses made. CONCLUSIONS: Phenomenological commonalities support a close relationship between the FSS, although differences remain in other domains.

Course of disability and respiratory function in untreated late-onset Pompe disease.

Fifty-two untreated patients with late-onset Pompe disease completed questionnaires about their clinical condition and level of handicap at baseline and at 1-year (n = 41) and 2-year follow-ups (n = 40). During this period, declines in functional activities, respiratory function, handicap, and survival were recorded on a group level. This study illustrates the progressiveness of late-onset Pompe disease and indicates the need for close clinical follow-up of both children and adults with this disorder.

Longitudinal assessment of nonavalent vaccine HPV types in a sample of sexually active African American women from ten U.S. Cities.

BACKGROUND: Chronic infection with high-risk human papillomavirus is a necessary cause for cervical carcinogenesis. This study examined prevalence of nonavalent vaccine preventable HPV types over four months among sexually active women in the United States. METHODS: This sub-study obtained meta-data for 80 of the 1,365 women (18-25 years), enrolled in the BRAVO study, a randomized, open-label trial of home screening and treatment of asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis at high-risk for sexually transmitted infections conducted between 2008 and 2013. Phenome-wide diagnostic comparison among suicide deaths and living individuals with chronic pain diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain, regardless of its type, is a significant risk factor for suicide. However, not all individuals with chronic pain also experience suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Better characterization of clinical risk profiles and comorbidities across the medical spectrum among people with chronic pain who die by suicide is urgently needed to aid treatment and prevention strategies. METHODS: This case-control study leverages population-based data from the Utah Suicide Mortality Risk Study. Specifically, we identify clinical phenotypes from diagnostic data that differentiate between

The Role of Unknown Risk Factors in Myocardial Infarction.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis of coronary arteries is the most common cause of myocardial infarction (MI), which is initiated from childhood and progresses gradually by aging. Several risk factors influence its progress, and are categorized as classic, traditional and novel factors. The role of unknown risk factors is becoming increasingly more significant recently. The aim of this study is to underscore the novel risk factors despite the importance of classic factors and consider these factors for future studies. METHODS: This is a prospective study on 180 myocardial infarction cases, conducte

Psychiatric casualties in the Pacific during World War II: servicemen hospitalised in a Brisbane mental hospital.

World War II created many psychiatric casualties but precise incidences were not accurately established. Battle shock was under-reported as some commanding officers were reluctant to admit that their men experienced battle stress. The objective in triage of any casualties was to retain as many patients in the war zone as possible, if further useful service was feasible. This also applied to soldiers with stress-related symptoms, who were treated in base hospitals as near to an operational zone as possible. The main treating maxims were "immediacy, proximity and expectancy", which involved rapi

Cellular Organelle-Related Transcriptomic Profile Abnormalities in Neuronopathic Types of Mucopolysaccharidosis: A Comparison with Other Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of diseases caused by mutations in genes encoding lysosomal enzymes that catalyze reactions of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) degradation. As a result, GAGs accumulate in lysosomes, impairing the proper functioning of entire cells and tissues. There are 14 types/subtypes of MPS, which are differentiated by the kind(s) of accumulated GAG(s) and the type of a non-functional lysosomal enzyme. Some of these types (severe forms of MPS types I and II, MPS III, and MPS VII) are characterized by extensive central nervous system disorders. The aim of this work was to id
