Traumatic dental injuries and their sequelae in visually impaired adolescents.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Traumatic dental injuries are a public health problem. Visual impairment can be considered a risk factor for traumatic dental injury given the difficulties imposed upon visually impaired patients by limited physical perception. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of traumatic dental injuries and their sequelae in adolescents with visual impairment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Adolescents (12-18 years) with visual impairment (blind or low vision) and no other special needs were included in the study. Data were collected after a clinical and radiographic examination. D

Brain Activity Associated With Expected Task Difficulty.

Previous research shows that people can use a cue to mentally prepare for a cognitive challenge. The response to a cue has been defined as phasic alertness which is reflected in faster responses and increased activity in frontal, parietal, thalamic, and visual brain regions. We examine if and how phasic alertness can be tuned to the expected difficulty of an upcoming challenge. If people in general are able to tune their level of alertness, then an inability to tune may be linked to disease. Twenty-two healthy volunteers performed a cued visual perception task with two levels of task difficult

Visual Experience Shapes the Neural Networks Remapping Touch into External Space.

Localizing touch relies on the activation of skin-based and externally defined spatial frames of reference. Psychophysical studies have demonstrated that early visual deprivation prevents the automatic remapping of touch into external space. We used fMRI to characterize how visual experience impacts the brain circuits dedicated to the spatial processing of touch. Sighted and congenitally blind humans performed a tactile temporal order judgment (TOJ) task, either with the hands uncrossed or crossed over the body midline. Behavioral data confirmed that crossing the hands has a detrimental effect

Cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation of the extrastriate visual cortex modulates implicit anti-fat bias in male, but not female, participants.

Explicit negative attitudes toward obese individuals are well documented and seem to modulate the activity of perceptual areas, such as the Extrastriate Body Area (EBA) in the lateral occipito-temporal cortex, which is critical for body-shape perception. Nevertheless, it is still unclear whether EBA serves a role in implicit weight-stereotypical bias, thus reflecting stereotypical trait attribution on the basis of perceptual cues. Here, we used an Implicit Association Test (IAT) to investigate whether applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over bilateral extrastriate visual co

Postretinal Structure and Function in Severe Congenital Photoreceptor Blindness Caused by Mutations in the GUCY2D Gene.

PURPOSE: To examine how severe congenital blindness resulting from mutations of the GUCY2D gene alters brain structure and function, and to relate these findings to the notable preservation of retinal architecture in this form of Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA). METHODS: Six GUCY2D-LCA patients (ages 20-46) were studied with optical coherence tomography of the retina and multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. Measurements from this group were compared to those obtained from populations of normally sighted controls and people with congenital blindness of a variety of causes

Zoom-out attentional impairment in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has long been associated with an inability to experience wholes without full attention to the constituent parts. A zoom-out attentional dysfunction might be partially responsible for this perceptual integration deficit in ASD. In the present study, the efficiency of attentional focusing mechanisms was investigated in children affected by ASD. We measured response latencies to a visual target onset displayed at three eccentricities from the fixation. Attentional resources were focused (zoom-in) or distributed (zoom-out) in the visual field presenting a small (cont

Feeling of presence in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: A feeling of presence (FP), that is, the vivid sensation that somebody (distinct from oneself) is present nearby, is commonly reported by patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), but its phenomenology has not been described precisely. The objective of this study was to provide a detailed description of FP in PD and to discuss its possible mechanisms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors studied 52 non-demented PD patients reporting FP in the preceding month (38 consecutive outpatients and 14 inpatients). FP characteristics were recorded with a structured questionnaire. The outpatients

IL-6 is not required for parathyroid hormone stimulation of RANKL expression, osteoclast formation, and bone loss in mice.

With each eye movement, a new image impinges on the retina, yet we do not notice any shift in visual perception. This perceptual stability indicates that the brain must be able to update visual representations to take our eye movements into account. Neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) update visual representations when the eyes move. The circuitry that supports these updated representations remains unknown, however. In this experiment, we asked whether the forebrain commissures are necessary for updating in area LIP when stimulus representations must be updated from one visual hemi
