Essential oils as an alternative control against cattle ticks in México: an integrative review.

The control of cattle ticks (Rhipicephalus microplus) is critical in livestock farming, especially in pasture-based systems, as these ectoparasites are vectors of diseases such as bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis. However, chemical pesticides have led to the development of resistance in tick populations, as well as in the elimination of beneficial soil fauna and the animal itself, making essential the development of alternative control methods. Essential oils (EOs), derived from plants, have emerged as a promising alternative due to their natural acaricidal and repellent properties. EOs rich

Suppression of essential oil biosynthesis in sweet basil cotyledons under hypergravity conditions.

The mechanism through which gravity influences the biosynthesis of essential oils in herbs is an important issue for plant and space biology. Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) seedlings were cultivated under centrifugal hypergravity conditions at 100 g in the light, and the growth of cotyledons, development of glandular hairs, and biosynthesis of essential oils were analyzed. The area and fresh weight of the cotyledons increased by similar amounts irrespective of the gravitational conditions. On the abaxial surface of the cotyledons, glandular hairs, where essential oils are synthesized and st

Edible chitosan-based Pickering emulsion coatings: Preparation, characteristics, and application in strawberry preservation.

The long-term application of plant essential oils in food preservation coatings is limited by their poor water solubility and high volatility, despite their recognized synergistic antimicrobial effects in postharvest fruit preservation. To overcome these limitations, a Pickering emulsion loaded with thyme essential oil (TEO) was developed by utilizing hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions to induce cross-linking of chitosan particles. This novel emulsion was subsequently applied in the postharvest storage of strawberries. The shear-thinning behavior (flow index <1) and elastic gel-li

[Research progress in the regulation of pathogenesis and the transformation of chronic liver disease by short-chain fatty acids].

Short-chain fatty acids are metabolites of the intestinal flora and serve as the main energy source for intestinal epithelial cells. At the same time, as important signaling molecules, it regulate a variety of cellular inflammatory responses and homeostatic proliferation through receptor-dependent and independent pathways. Short-chain fatty acids regulate the gut-liver axis and thereby directly act on the liver, participating in the pathogenesis and transformation of various liver diseases, including alcoholic liver disease, metabolic dysfunction-related liver disease, autoimmune liver disease

Short-chain fatty acids: Important components of the gut-brain axis against AD.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) comprises a group of neurodegenerative disorders with some changes in the brain, which could lead to the deposition of certain proteins and result in the degeneration and death of brain cells. Patients with AD manifest primarily as cognitive decline, psychiatric symptoms, and behavioural disorders. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are a class of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) produced by gut microorganisms through the fermentation of dietary fibre ingested. SCFAs, as a significant mediator of signalling, can have diverse physiological and pathological roles in the brain t

Intragastric administration of short chain fatty acids greatly reduces voluntary ethanol intake in rats.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) represents a public health crisis with few FDA-approved medications for its treatment. Growing evidence supports the key role of the bidirectional communication between the gut microbiota and the central nervous system (CNS) during the initiation and progression of alcohol use disorder. Among the different protective molecules that could mediate this communication, short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) have emerged as attractive candidates, since these gut microbiota-derived molecules have multi-target effects that could normalize several of the functional and structural p

Optimizing the winemaking process: NIR spectroscopy and e-nose analysis for the online monitoring of fermentation.

BACKGROUND: In the winemaking process, the rapid determination of specific quality parameters such as sugar content, pH, acidity, concentrations of phenolic compounds, anthocyanins and volatile organic compounds is crucial for high-quality wine production. Traditional analytical methods allow for precise quantification of these parameters but are time-consuming and expensive. This article explores the potential application of non-destructive analytical technique (NDAT) (near infra-red [NIR] and e-nose), as efficient alternatives for online monitoring of fermentation working on two different wi
