Using longitudinal qualitative research to explore the experience of receiving and using augmentative and alternative communication.

BACKGROUND: People who have communication difficulties may benefit from using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Understanding and measuring outcomes from the use of AAC is an important part of evaluating the impact of devices and services. Outcome measurement needs to reflect the changing nature of the impact of using AAC on an individual's ability to participate in activities of daily life. There is a limited understanding of the concepts that should inform the evaluation of outcomes from AAC device provision, nor how people's expectations from AAC may change over time. AIMS:

Pharmacological interventions for self-harm in adults.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm (SH; intentional self-poisoning or self-injury regardless of degree of suicidal intent or other types of motivation) is a growing problem in most countries, often repeated, and associated with suicide. Evidence assessing the effectiveness of pharmacological agents and/or natural products in the treatment of SH is lacking, especially when compared with the evidence for psychosocial interventions. This review therefore updates a previous Cochrane Review (last published in 2015) on the role of pharmacological interventions for SH in adults. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects

The Social Context of HIV Prevention and Care among Black Men Who Have Sex with Men in Three U.S. Cities: The Neighborhoods and Networks (N2) Cohort Study.

Background: In many parts of the world, stark racial disparities in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence, incidence, prevention, and care outcomes persist among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM), with Black MSM significantly impacted in the United States (U.S.). Individual-level characteristics, including sexual behaviors and socioeconomic status, do not fully account for racial/ethnic disparities in HIV among MSM. We hypothesize that neighborhood contexts and network characteristics influence risk for HIV infection as well as HIV-related prevention and care beh

Design and deployment of digital health interventions to reduce the risk of the digital divide and to inform development of the living with COVID recovery: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Digital health interventions can support health-related knowledge transfer, for example through websites or mobile applications, and may reduce health inequalities by making health care available, where access is difficult, and by translating content to overcome language barriers. However, digital health intervention can also increase health inequalities due to the digital divide. To reach digitally excluded populations, design and delivery mechanisms need to specifically address this issue. This review was conducted during the evolving COVID-19 pandemic and informed the rapid desi

Understanding the views of adult migrants around catch-up vaccination for missed routine immunisations to define strategies to improve coverage: A UK in-depth interview study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization's (WHO) Immunization Agenda 2030 emphasises ensuring equitable access to vaccination across the life course. This includes placing an emphasis on migrant populations who may have missed key childhood vaccines, doses, and boosters due to disrupted healthcare systems and the migration process, or differing vaccination schedules in home countries. Guidelines exist in the UK for offering catch-up vaccinations to adolscent and adult migrants with incomplete or uncertain vaccination status (including MMR, Td-IPV, MenACWY, HPV), but emerging evidence suggests

Momentary Influences on Self-Regulation in Two Populations With Health Risk Behaviors: Adults Who Smoke and Adults Who Are Overweight and Have Binge-Eating Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Self-regulation has been implicated in health risk behaviors and is a target of many health behavior interventions. Despite most prior research focusing on self-regulation as an individual-level trait, we hypothesize that self-regulation is a time-varying mechanism of health and risk behavior that may be influenced by momentary contexts to a substantial degree. Because most health behaviors (e.g., eating, drinking, smoking) occur in the context of everyday activities, digital technologies may help us better understand and influence these behaviors in real time. Using a momentary

The Engage with Developmental Language Disorder (E-DLD) project: Cohort profile.

BACKGROUND: Public awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is lower than other neurodevelopmental disorders, despite its high prevalence of 7.6%. This lower awareness means recruitment for DLD research studies is difficult. DLD is both underfunded and under-researched, resulting in relatively limited research investigating individuals with DLD. Engage with Developmental Language Disorder (E-DLD) is a response to these considerations. E-DLD is the first international participant database of those affected by DLD. Parents of children with DLD under 16 and young people and adults over

The association between generative AI use and university students' critical thinking: a moderated mediation model of GenAI feedback literacy and reflective thinking.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has rapidly become an everyday learning resource for university students, yet evidence on whether such use is associated with stronger or weaker critical thinking is sharply divided. Recent work documents both cognitive scaffolding and "metacognitive laziness" effects, suggesting that the AI-cognition relationship is contingent on how students engage with AI-generated feedback. Drawing on the extended-mind framework, cognitive load theory and feedback-literacy theory, we test a cross-sectional moderated mediation model in which GenAI feedback literacy

Healthy Madrasas: a qualitative study using normalisation process theory and co-production approach to explore translation of a childhood obesity prevention intervention in Islamic religious settings from one UK city to another.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity remains high in the UK, with a higher prevalence among children from ethnic minority groups. The 'Healthy Madrasa' programme was developed and implemented in Bradford, UK, to support obesity prevention in Muslim children by working with Islamic religious settings such as madrasas. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore how the 'Healthy Madrasa' programme could be adapted for delivery in another UK city where the proportion of people from the Muslim faith is lower and the ethnic composition is more diverse. DESIGN: A qualitative study involving a co-pro

Lee Byeong-haeng's Taegeuk Acupuncture and the Debate over the Modernization of Korean Medicine.

This study examines the life and scholarly achievements of Lee Byeong-haeng (1906-1975), who passed the Qualifying Examination for Korean Medical Doctors in 1954 and subsequently established himself as both a clinician and a theorist. By exploring one dimension of the debate over the "modernization" of traditional Korean medicine in which Lee played a significant role, the study seeks to illuminate the intellectual shifts that shaped the 1960s and 1970s, formative decades in the development of contemporary Korean medicine. The analysis draws on major works by Lee, including Annotation of Midni

The evolution of SSRI research: trajectories of knowledge domains across four decades.

BACKGROUND: Since their introduction in 1982, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) have fundamentally transformed psychiatric care, becoming the first-line pharmacological treatment for depression and expanding to treat anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other conditions. Over four decades, SSRI research has generated an expansive, multidisciplinary scholarly landscape spanning neuropharmacology, psychiatry, somatic medicine, and environmental sciences. While specialisation creates deep expertise, it also risks intellectual isolation, underscoring a growing need f

Implementing Shared Decision-Making in Haemophilia Care: Best Practice Recommendations From a Western European Multi-Stakeholder Delphi Process.

INTRODUCTION: Shared decision-making (SDM) is a collaborative process in which people with haemophilia (PWH) and healthcare professionals (HCPs) make treatment decisions informed by the best available evidence and aligned with patient values, preferences and goals. The expanding treatment landscape, including standard, extended and ultra-half-life factors, rebalancing agents, bispecific antibodies and gene therapy, has made SDM an essential element of quality haemophilia care. Despite recognition of its importance in international health policy frameworks and haemophilia-specific guidelines, i

Supporting continuous glucose monitoring for people with serious mental illness and type 2 diabetes: a co-design study for a structured intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI), such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, are at a two- to threefold increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and face significant health inequalities, including reduced life expectancy. Diabetes self-management in this population is challenging, and existing interventions are poorly suited to their needs. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) offers potential benefits but remains underused. This study aimed to co-design a logic model and programme theory for a structured CGM intervention tailored to adults with SMI and type 2 dia

Barriers and facilitators in access to cervical cancer secondary prevention in Cochabamba, Bolivia: a qualitative study of healthcare providers' perceptions.

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of cervical cancer (CC) screening in Bolivia, coverage remains low and uneven across municipalities. This suggests the presence of barriers to effective secondary prevention, which involves early detection through screening and treatment of precancerous lesions. There is limited research on the perceptions of healthcare providers (HCPs) regarding the challenges that women in Bolivia face when accessing CC secondary prevention. This study therefore explored HCPs' perceptions of barriers and facilitators for women's access to CC secondary prevention in Cochab

'The evidence is out there…': perspectives of healthcare providers on improving asthma and COPD prevention and care within a major health authority region of British Columbia, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) impose substantial morbidity and health system burden in Canada. Within Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), a large and geographically diverse health authority in British Columbia, variation in service availability, access and care coordination creates barriers to prevention and high-quality chronic respiratory disease management. This project sought to document healthcare professionals' (HCPs') experiences and recommendations to inform a regional strategy to improve asthma and COPD care. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative qua

"It's more than just blood pressure and stitches": a critical examination of paramedic services from the perspectives of intimate partner violence advocates.

BACKGROUND: As a detrimental and persistent criminal, social, and health issue, intimate partner violence (IPV) is a severe threat to the well-being of survivors. The healthcare system, specifically the emergency department, has provided access to services and supports for survivors of IPV when seeking healthcare. However, many survivors of IPV are unable to attend the hospital and access the corresponding services. Paramedics, versatile in-community service providers, could play a vital role in linking survivors to healthcare and support services. In-community IPV advocates understand the cir
