Efficient Ethanol Dehydrogenation to Acetaldehyde and H2 via Synergistic Thermocatalysis and Electrocatalysis.

The dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde and H2 represents an attractive synthetic route, owing to the versatile applications of acetaldehyde and the high atom economy. In this work, efficient ethanol dehydrogenation was achieved at the anode of a high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyzer by integrating thermocatalytic ethanol dehydrogenation (EDHR) with electrochemical hydrogen oxidation (HOR) over Ru/C and PdAu/C composite catalytic layer. The Ru/C serves as a bifunctional catalyst for the EDHR and HOR, and the PdAu/C could rapidly electrooxidize retained acetaldehyde

Synergistic Cu-Zr and Cu-Mn Dual-Interfaces Boost CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

Designing highly active and stable Cu-based catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol is challenging due to an insufficient understanding of the critical role of interfacial sites. In this work, we construct a high-performance CuZrMn catalyst with abundant Cu-Zr/Cu-Mn dual interfaces. The optimized CZM-3 catalyst exhibits a CO2 conversion of 23.9% and a high methanol space-time yield of 857 g kgcat-1 h-1 under conditions of 4.5 MPa and 260 °C. By integrating in situ DRIFTS, TPSR-MS, and transient pulse experiments, we reveal a synergistic dual-channel mechanism involving *HOCO/*CO and *HCOO

Concurrent hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and thrombotic microangiopathy in a patient with Epstein-Barr virus infection and gastric adenocarcinoma: the puzzle started with microangiopathic hemolytic anemia.

Malignancy-associated-hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is rare and often seen in high-grade lymphomas and acute leukemias; solid-tumor-associated HLH is extremely uncommon. The diagnosis of malignancy-associated-HLH remains challenging in clinical practices as it masquerades as and coexists with many other conditions. Here we presented a case with concurrent solid-tumor-associated HLH and thrombotic microangiopathy. The patient was an 80-year-old male with microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA), progressive bi-lineage cytopenia, and active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Extensiv

Hypnosis: An aid in working with patients with narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is a primary neurological sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, and in a majority of patients, cataplexy, which is sudden muscle weakness brought on by strong emotion. While often thought of as an adult condition, narcolepsy can be present at any age and may occur as often as 1 in 2000 individuals. Regardless of age, its effects are far-reaching, resulting in missed school or work days, poor school or work performance and all associated ramifications. In children and young-adults, narcolepsy can masquerade for years as anxiety, depression, attention deficit d

[EPIPEN INSTRUCTIONS FOR ANAPHYLAXIS PATIENTS DURING DISPENSING: FACTORS RELATED TO THE QUALITY OF PHARMACISTS' INSTRUCTIONS].

BACKGROUND AND AIM: We previously reported that pharmacists working in pharmacies don't have enough knowledge and enough experience teaching anaphylaxis (An) and EpiPen use. We administered a questionnaire survey to pharmacists with experience handling EpiPen prescriptions. We investigated the relationship between the questionnaire results and the factors in the pharmacists' background regarding the explanation and guidance to patients. RESULTS: The percentage of pharmacists working in pharmacies who provided guidance using visual information and demonstrations was insufficient. Moreover, thi

Expanding the pH range of Fenton-like reactions for pollutant degradation: The impact of acidic microenvironments.

Heterogeneous Fenton reactions offer the opportunities to overcome iron sludge accumulation and limited recyclability of existing homogeneous Fenton process, but the sharp attenuation in their reactivity at near-neutral and even higher pH conditions, still remains a formidable challenge. In this work, we report a versatile and robust approach to create a local acidic microenvironment on BiOI with graphene oxide bonding, enabling the heterogeneous Fenton (BiOI@rGO/H2O2) system to sustainably degrade organic pollutants over a wide pH range (3.0-10.0). Notably, BiOI@rGO exhibits a superior cataly

Photoactivated Hydrogen Sulfide Donor with a Near-Infrared Fluorescence Report System for Accelerated Chronic Wound Healing.

Delayed wound healing is one of the major diabetes complications that occur in 25% of diabetic patients. Specific wound management and combination treatment are required to repair the wound, which still remains a challenge with few effective therapies available currently. In this work, a new H2S donor PRO-F, which is characterized by the capability to promote wound healing in diabetes, was designed. PRO-F can be activated by light without consuming endogenous substances and the accompanying fluorescent signal makes the real-time tracking of released H2S possible. PRO-F is able to deliver H2S i

Towards Simultaneous Noninvasive Arterial and Venous Oxygenation Monitoring with Wearable E-Tattoo.

While noninvasive arterial blood oxygenation is easily estimated using peripheral pulse oximeters, noninvasive venous blood oxygenation monitoring is still a critical unmet need. Critical conditions that lead to inefficient extraction of oxygen from the blood, such as sepsis or shock, can only be detected by analyzing the oxygen content of the venous blood. In this work, we introduce a soft wearable e-tattoo sensor that simultaneously measures the arterial and venous pulses from the wrist. First, we prove that the origin of the signal is venous pulsatility. We hypothesize that a significant ob

The Effect of Sterilization on the Characteristics of Silk Fibroin Nanoparticles.

In recent years, silk fibroin nanoparticles (SFNs) have been consolidated as drug delivery systems (DDSs) with multiple applications in personalized medicine. The design of a simple, inexpensive, and scalable preparation method is an objective pursued by many research groups. When the objective is to produce nanoparticles suitable for biomedical uses, their sterility is essential. To achieve sufficient control of all the crucial stages in the process and knowledge of their implications for the final characteristics of the nanoparticles, the present work focused on the final stage of sterilizat

Precisely Tailoring Heterometallic Polyoxotitanium Clusters for the Efficient and Selective Photocatalytic Oxidation of Hydrocarbons.

Photocatalysis is a promising yet challenging approach for the selective oxidation of hydrocarbons to valuable oxygenated chemicals with O2 under mild conditions. In this work, we report an atomically precise material model to address this challenge. The key to our solution is the rational incorporation of Fe species into polyoxotitanium cluster to form a heterometallic Ti4 Fe1 cocrystal. This newly designed cocrystal cluster, which well governs the energy and charge transfer as evidenced by spectroscopic characterizations and theoretical calculations, enables the synergistic process involving

Evolutionary advantages of turning points in human cooperative behaviour.

Cooperation is crucial to overcome some of the most pressing social challenges of our times, such as the spreading of infectious diseases, corruption and environmental conservation. Yet, how cooperation emerges and persists is still a puzzle for social scientists. Since human cooperation is individually costly, cooperative attitudes should have been eliminated by natural selection in favour of selfishness. Yet, cooperation is common in human societies, so there must be some features which make it evolutionarily advantageous. Using a cognitive inspired model of human cooperation, recent work Re

Striking the balance with epistemic injustice in healthcare: the case of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

Miranda Fricker's influential concept of epistemic injustice (Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2007) has recently seen application to many areas of interest, with an increasing body of healthcare research using the concept of epistemic injustice in order to develop both general frameworks and accounts of specific medical conditions and patient groups. This paper illuminates tensions that arise between taking steps to protect against committing epistemic injustice in healthcare, and taking steps to understand the complexity of one's predicament and treat it accordingly. Work on epistemic injust

Design and Development of a Quasi-Passive Transtibial Biarticular Prosthesis to Replicate Gastrocnemius Function in Walking.

Lower-limb amputees experience many gait impairments and limitations. Some of these impairments can be attributed to the lack of a functioning biarticular gastrocnemius (GAS) muscle. We propose a transtibial prosthesis that implements a quasi-passive spring mechanism to replicate GAS function. A prototype biarticular prosthesis (BP) was designed, built, and tested on one subject with a transtibial amputation. They walked on an instrumented treadmill with motion capture under three different biarticular spring stiffness conditions. A custom-developed OpenSim musculoskeletal model, which include

Direct and Noninvasive Penetration of Bare Hydrophobic Quantum Dots through Live Cell Membranes.

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) possess outstanding optical properties as fluorescent probes, but their applications in live cell intracellular imaging are hindered by various cellular transport barriers. Inspired by membrane proteins inserting their nanometer-scale hydrophobic surface into biomembranes, the present work aims to investigate the possibility that bare hydrophobic QDs could penetrate through live cell membranes without disrupting the membrane integrity. We utilize live cell spinning disk confocal microscopy to image and track the cellular transport process of bare hydrophobic QD

[Deconstructing Kanner].

Kanner, in 1943, and Asperger, in 1944, published papers that have been considered the first descriptions of autism. Kanner is acknowledged as having been the first to recognise this condition, while Asperger is attributed with the identification of a milder form of autism which has been denominated Asperger's syndrome. Kanner's paper played an important role in the development of the conceptualisation of autism due to its being published in the United States, where it became popular in the field of child psychiatry. In contrast, Asperger's work, written in German during the period dominated b
