Genetics of vocal quality characteristics in monozygotic twins: a multiparameter approach.

The main purpose of this study was to determine the vocal quality characteristics among the 45 monozygotic cotwins (MT). As the performance of the voice is related to several genetically determined anatomical and physiological factors, the authors hypothesized that the vocal characteristics and the overall vocal quality by means of the Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) will be identical in MT. An additional objective of this study was to determine whether sex and age influence vocal similarities in MT and to compare the voice characteristics of MT with the normative data of unrelated peers. Effects of glucocorticoid receptor antagonist on CAPs threshold shift due to short-term sound exposure in guinea pigs.

OBJECTIVE: The steroid drugs are used for the standard treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss. However, clinical results on the effect of glucocorticoids in acoustic trauma have not yet been understood well. The effects of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) antagonist, mifepristone, on the cochlea sensitivity loss due to short-term sound exposure were studied in the guinea pig. METHODS: Mifepristone (20 mg/kg) was injected subcutaneously immediately after the noise exposure to 4 kHz pure tone of 100 or 120 dB SPL for 10 min and also at 1 day and 3 days later. Seven days after the sound expo

Behavioural profiles of inbred mouse strains used as transgenic backgrounds. I: motor tests.

One of the characteristic manifestations in several neurodegenarative diseases is the loss of voluntary motor control and the development of involuntary movements. In order to determine the suitability of six mouse strains as transgenic background strains we investigated performance on a variety of tasks designed to identify subtle changes in motor control. On both the accelerating and the staggered speed rotarod all six mouse strains performed well. However, latency to fall from the rod was sensitive to both rotarod speed and repeated exposure to the apparatus. Performance of the DBA/2 mouse

Role of the somatosensory system in primary dystonia.

The pathophysiology of dystonia is still not fully understood, but it is widely held that a dysfunction of the corticostriatal-thalamocortical motor circuits plays a major role in the pathophysiology of this syndrome. Although the most dramatic symptoms in dystonia seem to be motor in nature, marked somatosensory perceptual deficits are also present in this disease. In addition, several lines of evidence, including neurophysiological, neuroimaging and experimental findings, suggest that both motor and somatosensory functions may be defective in dystonia. Consequently, abnormal processing of th

Ultrasonic characterization of articular cartilage.

Osteoarthrosis is the most important joint disease that threatens health of the musculoskeletal system of elderly people. Today, there is a need for sensitive, quantitative diagnostic methods for successful and early diagnosis of the disorder. In the present study, we aimed at evaluating the applicability of ultrasound for quantitative assessment of cartilage structure and properties. Bovine articular cartilage was investigated both in vitro and in situ using high frequency ultrasound. Cartilage samples were also tested mechanically in vitro to reveal relationships between acoustic and mechani

Is there a relationship between speech and nonspeech auditory processing in children with dyslexia?

A group of 8 young teenagers with dyslexia were compared to age-matched control participants on a number of speech and nonspeech auditory tasks. There were no differences between the control participants and the teenagers with dyslexia in forward and simultaneous masking, nor were there any differences in frequency selectivity as indexed by performance with a bandstop noise. Thresholds for backward masking in a broadband noise were elevated for the teenagers with dyslexia as a group. If this deficit in backward masking had an influence on speech perception, we might expect the perception of "b

Hirschsprung's disease: a more generalised neuropathy?

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Aberrant neural crest migration is implicated in the pathogenesis of hindgut aganglionosis in Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR). Neural crest progenitors also give rise to a variety of cell types outside the gut, including nerves of the inner ear and peripheral nervous system. This study aims to determine whether such nerves are also affected in HSCR. METHODS: Pure tone audiometry and oto-acoustic emission tests were performed on 53 patients with Hirschsprung's disease and 28 age-matched controls. Forty-two children with Hirschsprung's disease and 30 age-matched controls also

Saccadic suppression induces focal hypooxygenation in the occipital cortex.

This study investigated how a decrease in neuronal activity affects cerebral blood oxygenation employing a paradigm of acoustically triggered saccades in complete darkness. Known from behavioral evidence as saccadic suppression, electrophysiologically it has been shown in monkeys that during saccades an attenuation of activity occurs in visual cortex neurons (Duffy and Burchfiel, 1975). In study A, using blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) contrast functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the authors observed signal intensity decreases bilaterally at the occipital pole during the performa

F-waves of the facial muscles in healthy control subjects and in patients with peripheral facial nerve disturbance.

F-waves were recorded from the mentalis muscles with surface electrodes following stimulation of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve in healthy control subjects during wakefulness, non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and voluntary contraction and in patients with Bell's palsy and acoustic neurinoma. The F-wave of the facial muscles results from the backfiring of antidromically activated alpha motoneurons in the facial motonucleus. Therefore, first, the F-waves were not easily elicited in patients with any disturbance in the proximal segment of the facial nerve (Bell's palsy and a

High-resolution MR cisternography of the cerebellopontine angle, obtained with a three-dimensional fast asymmetric spin-echo sequence in a 0.35-T open MR imaging unit.

High-resolution MR cisternography performed with 3D fast asymmetric spin-echo imaging (3D fast spin-echo with an ultra-long echo train length and asymmetric Fourier imaging) was optimized in a 0.35-T open MR imaging unit. The 0.35- and 1.5-T images of the two volunteers and three patients with acoustic schwannomas were then compared. The optimal parameters for images obtained by 3D fast asymmetric spin-echo imaging at 0.35 T were as follows: field of view, 15 cm; matrix, 256 x 256 x 40; section thickness, 1 mm; echo train length, 76; and imaging time, 10 minutes 44 seconds. Cell damage by lithotripter shock waves at high pressure to preclude cavitation.

Acoustic cavitation has been implicated as a cause of cell damage by lithotripter shock waves, particularly under in vitro conditions. When red blood cells were exposed to shock waves (from an electrohydraulic lithotripter) while under high hydrostatic pressure (> 80 atm), cell lysis was dramatically reduced over that seen at atmospheric pressure, which is consistent with damage due to acoustic cavitation. However, even at > 120 atm of pressure, lysis was still 97% above that of cells not exposed to shock waves, revealing significant damage that apparently was due to mechanisms other than cavi

The effect of changes in hearing status on speech sound level and speech breathing: a study conducted with cochlear implant users and NF-2 patients.

According to a dual-process theory of the role of hearing in speech production, hearing helps maintain an internal model used by the speech control mechanism to achieve phonemic goals. It also monitors the acoustic environment and guides relatively rapid adjustments in postural parameters, such as those underlying average speech sound level and rate, in order to achieve suprasegmental goals that are a compromise between intelligibility and economy of effort. In order to obtain evidence bearing on this theory, acoustic and aerodynamic measures were collected from seven adventitiously deaf speak

Snoring: analysis, measurement, clinical implications and applications.

Snoring was described in literature even before medicine. Common definitions do not consider acoustic measurements of snoring. In this paper we discuss the main pathophysiological aspects of snoring and the snoring-sleep relationship as the generating mechanisms. Snoring can be analysed and measured by the following methods: 1) Leq-Equivalent Continuous Sound Level, which only quantifies noisiness, annoyance, and damage to the partner's and snorer's hearing; 2) Power Spectrum, with frequency values, formantic structure data and typical shape, which can help to distinguish simple snoring from h

Pre- and posttreatment comparison of the kinematics of the fluent speech of persons who stutter.

This study reports changes in acoustic, respiratory, laryngeal, and articulatory kinematics of 3 males who stutter, following participation in a version of the Hollins Precision Fluency Shaping Program. Two nonstuttering controls received no treatment. Subjects repeated phrases of the form "He see CVC again" at self-selected slow, normal, and fast speaking rates. For experimental subjects, acoustic duration of the phrases increased significantly in 7 out of 9 comparisons of before- and after-treatment conditions, whereas controls decreased the duration of the phrases in 4 out of 6 comparisons
