Motivational interviewing for alcohol use reduction in Thai patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Alcohol consumption is a major public health issue, linked to a wide range of physical, psychological, familial, and social harms, as well as increased rates of violence, accidents, and mortality. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a motivational interviewing program in reducing alcohol consumption patterns among Thai patients. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study included a control group (CG) and an experimental group (EG), each consisting of 30 patients. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS, utilizing both d

Optimizing measures of drinking to predict alcohol-related consequences.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use surges in late adolescence, particularly among college students, and is associated with a wide variety of negative socio-emotional, academic, legal, and health consequences. Although most studies assess risk for these consequences through self-report of drinking quantity and frequency, ample evidence indicates that youth who drink alcohol can be inaccurate in reporting their drinking behavior and that estimates become increasingly biased as drinking increases. In the current study, we examined two approaches for optimizing self-reported alcohol consumption estimates to

Predictors of Replacing Alcohol With Cannabis Among Adult Women.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use among women varies by age, with younger women more likely to binge drink and older women more often engaging in consistent, long-term consumption. Both groups face health risks, including chronic disease, mental health conditions, and sleep disturbance. Cannabis has been proposed as a harm reduction substitute for alcohol because of its lower risks of dependency and health harms. The aims of this study are (a) to identify differences between younger and older women regarding their choices to use cannabis products as a substitute for alcohol and (b) to explore multiple d

Patient Awareness of Alcohol Consumption and Breast Cancer Risk.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the proportion of female patients from Mayo Clinic Family Medicine and Community Internal Medicine clinics who are aware of alcohol use as a breast cancer (BC) risk factor. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One thousand women aged 21 to 70 completed a survey collecting information on demographics, medical/family history, frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption, and other health behaviors. Participants were also asked to grade how likely certain factors were to increase lifetime BC risk. RESULTS: Most participants (844/990 [85.3%]) identified a family history of BC as a BC ri

Alcohol consumption and associated psychosocial factors in medical students.

A high prevalence of alcohol consumption has been described among medical students. However, due to possible variations in the patterns of alcohol consumption and possible biological, social and cultural differences among different populations, it is relevant to address the relations that exist between at-risk alcohol consumption and associated social and psychological factors in a group of medical students. A cross-sectional study was carried out. In the AUDIT, at-risk alcohol use was defined as ≥ 8 (males) and ≥6 (females). Associations were assessed using multivariable logistic regression.

Imbalance of the Immune Response According to Alcohol Consumption Patterns.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol intake promotes the translocation of endotoxins, stimulating immune cell activation and the production of cellular mediators, dysregulating the inflammatory process. We simultaneously evaluated the number of immune cells and cytokine concentrations, in relation to the pattern of alcohol consumption. METHODS: A cross-sectional study included five groups according to alcohol intake (hazardous drinking [HD], low alcohol use disorders [AUDs] [l-AUDs], moderate-severe AUDs [ms-AUDs], no decompensated cirrhosis, and alcohol-associated hepatitis [AH]). The control (CT) group was

The Impact of Parental Alcohol Misuse on Children: A Systematic Review.

Background: Although the impact of parental alcohol misuse has been widely published in various studies, there is very little that is known about the lives and experiences of children affected by the issue from their own perspectives. Denial and secrecy are hallmarks of this issue, and children's voices too often go unheard. Moreover, most studies rely on a small homogeneous sample limiting generalisability. The perspectives of minority ethnic families and children are absent. Equally so, are gaps in studies about middle-class society who are more able to mask their issues and less frequently

Recent advances in alcohol metabolism: from the gut to the brain.

Globally, alcohol is the most widely used psychoactive drug and a leading cause of premature death among individuals aged 15-49 years. Understanding the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of alcohol in the human body, otherwise known as alcohol pharmacokinetics, is essential for predicting its behavioral effects and toxic consequences. This review examines the evolutionary origins of alcohol consumption and metabolism, focusing on the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes across species, which serve as key catalysts in alcohol oxidation. It also highlights recent advances

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Alcohol Consumption and Mortality in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: Although there are racial/ethnic differences in alcohol use, there is little information about differences in mortality from all alcohol-related conditions or by cause of death. Furthermore, little is known about the degree to which racial/ethnic differences in mortality persist after adjusting for ethanol consumption. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to comprehensively assess racial/ethnic differences in alcohol-attributable deaths and reduced life expectancy. METHODS: Alcohol prevalence data were from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, and mortality d

Metabolomics in the study of alcohol use disorder: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is linked to multiple medical conditions, partly due to ethanol's toxic effects, which disrupt a wide range of molecular compounds. Metabolome research provides crucial insights that can improve the understanding and management of AUD and alcohol-related harm. This systematic review synthesizes recent evidence on metabolomic disturbances in individuals with alcohol use, risky alcohol consumption, and AUD. METHODS: A PRISMA-guided systematic review was conducted up to January 31, 2024, across PubMed, Scopus, and PsycInfo. Articles meeting the following cr

Hunger Recruits a Parallel Circuit Encoding Alcohol Reward.

Internal states like hunger, pain, thirst and arousal can bias behavior by affecting sensory and memory processing. Internal states are critical to understand in the context of alcohol addiction because they influence cravings, reinstatement, and relapse. Norepinephrine plays a key role in both hunger and alcohol-induced arousal and preference, but the circuit-level mechanisms through which it modulates the influence of hunger on alcohol preference are not well understood. We sought to address this using intersectional genetic tools for manipulating neurons expressing octopamine, the invertebr

Excessive alcohol consumption: a driver of metabolic dysfunction and inflammation.

With the increasing prevalence of alcohol-related diseases, expanding our understanding of the toxic effects of excessive alcohol consumption is critical for prevention and treatment of metabolic and inflammatory pathology. This review summarizes current knowledge on the metabolic dysfunction and inflammation caused by alcohol and their impact on the pathogenesis of alcohol-related liver disease (ALD), type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, and neurological damage. It highlights recent evidence that alcohol induces a cascade of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated lipid peroxi

Treatment approaches for alcohol use disorder with metabolic dysfunction.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and alcohol excess contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality through their multisystem effects, particularly on liver health. When combined with metabolic dysfunction--defined as obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and dyslipidemia--alcohol consumption has additive and synergistic effects that are associated with liver disease progression and increased risk of cardiovascular, cancer-related, hepatic, and all-cause mortality. Despite growing recognition of these overlapping risk factors, there remains no universally accepted threshold for "safe" alcohol

Circulating microRNAs and alcohol consumption in the multiethnic cohort study.

Excessive alcohol consumption is a significant public health concern and contributes to liver diseases and cancer. Modifiable lifestyle factors including alcohol consumption can influence circulating microRNAs (miRNAs), which are increasingly used as biomarkers for early disease detection. Yet limited studies have identified miRNAs associated with alcohol intake, particularly in multiethnic populations. We aimed to assess the association of alcohol consumption and circulating miRNAs in the Multiethnic Cohort Study. Participants (N = 917) had alcohol consumption data collected at baseline and m

Alcohol impairs learning and timing of conditioned eyeblink responses.

Alcohol impairs motor performance, but it remains unclear precisely why this is the case. Here, we examine the effects of alcohol intoxication on conditioned eyeblink responses, a form of classical conditioning dependent on the cerebellum. In experiment 1, the conditioned responses of 18 students before and after alcohol consumption up to 1 ‰ were compared against the performance of 26 non-drinking controls. In experiment 2, 17 students were tested repeatedly at increasing blood alcohol levels up to 1 ‰. The results reveal a gradual decrease in both the percentage and timing of conditioned res

Protective Effects of Curcumin against Alcoholic Fatty Liver.

Alcoholism is a global health concern. Due to its role as the principal site of ethanol metabolism, the liver endures the most significant amount of tissue damage from heavy drinking. Numerous liver lesions can result from chronic and heavy alcohol use, including steatosis, hepatitis, and fibrosis/cirrhosis. Fatty liver is caused by a redox shift from the oxidized to the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) caused by the ethanol oxidation reaction. The other molecular mechanisms related to the progression of alcohol-induced liver injury are increasing sterol regulatory elem
