Simplified Easy-Accessible Smartphone-Based Photogrammetry for 3-Dimensional Anatomy Presentation Exemplified With a Photorealistic Cadaver-Based Model of the Intracranial and Extracranial Course of the Facial Nerve.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Smartphone-based photogrammetry (SMPhP) was recently presented as a practical and simple algorithm to create photorealistic 3-dimensional (3D) models that benefit from volumetric presentation of real anatomic dissections. Subsequently, there is a need to adapt the techniques for realistic depiction of layered anatomic structures, such as the course of cranial nerves and deep intracranial structures; the feasibility must be tested empirically. This study sought to adapt and test the technique for visualization of the combined intracranial and extracranial course of th

High-resolution 3-dimensional tomography may be a useful tool for understanding the anatomy of hiatal hernias and surgical planning of patients eligible for laparoscopic or robotic antireflux surgery.

BACKGROUND: 3D computed tomography (CT) has been seldom used for the evaluation of hiatal hernias (HH) in surgical patients. This study aims to describe the 3D CT findings in candidates for laparoscopic or robotic antireflux surgery or HH repair and compare them with other tests. METHODS: Thirty patients with HH and/or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) who were candidates for surgical treatment and underwent high-resolution CT were recruited. The variables studied were distance from the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) to the hiatus; total gastric volume and herniated gastric volume, perce

Combined Impact of Excess Zinc and Cadmium on Elemental Uptake, Leaf Anatomy and Pigments, Antioxidant Capacity, and Function of Photosynthetic Apparatus in Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea L.).

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) is a medicinal plant that has the potential to be used for phytoextraction of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) from contaminated soils by accumulating these metals in its tissues. Additionally, it has been found to be more tolerant to excess Zn than to Cd stress alone; however, the interactive effects of the combined treatment with Zn and Cd on this medicinal herb, and the protective strategies of Zn to alleviate Cd toxicity have not yet been established in detail. In this study, clary sage plants grown hydroponically were simultaneously exposed to Zn (900 µM) and Cd (

Anatomical Step-by-Step Dissection of Complex Skull Base Approaches for Trainees: Surgical Anatomy of the Middle Fossa Approaches and Anterior Petrosectomy, Surgical Principles, and Illustrative Cases.

Introduction  The middle fossa (MF) approaches encompass a group of versatile surgical accesses to pathologies in the MF, internal auditory canal (IAC), and superomedial aspect of the posterior fossa. Although many descriptions of the MF approaches have been published, a practical surgical guide that allows an easy understanding for Skull Base trainees is needed. Methods  Three formalin-fixed, colored-injected specimens were dissected under microscopic magnification (six sides). A MF craniotomy followed by IAC drilling was performed on three sides, and anterior petrosectomy (AP) was performed

Temporal profile of the vascular anatomy evaluated by 9.4-tesla magnetic resonance angiography and histological analysis in mice with the R4859K mutation of RNF213, the susceptibility gene for moyamoya disease.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a chronic, occlusive cerebrovascular disease with an unknown etiology. Recent genome-wide and locus-specific association studies identified the RNF213 gene (RNF213) as an important susceptibility gene of MMD among East Asian populations; however, the mechanism by which an abnormality in RNF213 leads to MMD has not yet been elucidated. Therefore, we herein generated Rnf213-knock-in mice (RNF213-KI) expressing a missense mutation in mouse Rnf213, p. R4828K, on Exon 61, corresponding to human RNF213, p. R4859K, on Exon 60, in MMD patients, and investigated whether they d

Evaluation of domestic and Yucatan swine nasal sinus anatomy as models for future sinonasal research of medications delivered by standard instruments used in functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to find an animal model to study new medications to improve mucosal wound healing after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Current literature suggests swine as a potential candidate. The lack of information correlating swine computer tomography (CT) and endoscopic sinonasal anatomy prompted us to investigate them in the domestic and Yucatan swine to determine their feasibility as models to test new medications and drug-embedded stents applied using FESS techniques. METHODS: Two domestic pig heads and 2 Yucatan pig heads were imaged using helical thin slice

Anomalous right coronary artery arising next to the left coronary ostium: unambiguous detection of the anatomy by computed tomography and evaluation of functional significance by cardiovascular magnetic resonance.

Herein we report on the diagnostic potential of multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT) combined with cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) for the diagnostic workup in an adult patient with a rare coronary anomaly. MDCT unambiguously detected the anomalous right coronary artery (RCA), which originated next to the left coronary ostium and coursed inter-arterially between the ascending aorta and the pulmonary trunk. The intramural proximal intussusception of the ectopic RCA could be clearly appreciated on MDCT images, while multiple mixed plaques were detected in the left anterior desce

Anatomy and histology of the brain and sense organs of the antarctic plunderfish Dolloidraco longedorsalis (Perciformes: Notothenioidei: Artedidraconidae), with comments on the brain morphology of other artedidraconids and closely related harpagiferids.

In the high-latitude shelf waters of Antarctica, fishes in the perciform suborder Notothenioidei dominate the fish fauna and constitute an adaptive radiation and a species flock. The 25 species of notothenioid plunderfishes, comprising four genera of the family Artedidraconidae, contribute substantially to fish species diversity on the high Antarctic shelf. A mental barbel is an autapomorphy for the family. Dolloidraco longedorsalis is the most abundant artedidraconid at depths over 400 m in these waters. In this article we present the anatomy and histology of the brain and special sense organ

In vitro high-field magnetic resonance imaging-documented anatomy of a fetal myelomeningocele at 20 weeks' gestation. A contribution to the rationale of intrauterine surgical repair of spina bifida.

OBJECT: It remains uncertain if closure of a myelomeningocele at midgestation changes the neurological condition at birth in an infant born with spina bifida. The authors conducted a study to provide a detailed analysis of the morphology of the spinal cord with the myelomeningocele at the time fetal surgery usually is performed. METHODS: The myelomeningocele of a 20-week-gestation-age fetus was examined, and data were compared with those obtained in a neurologically intact specimen of the same age. In vitro high-field 9.4-tesla magnetic resonance (MR) microscopy was used to examine the fetal

Relationship of pain to the radiological anatomy of the hip joint in adults treated for congenital dislocation of the hip as infants: a long-term follow-up of patients treated by three methods.

Sixty female patients with congenital dislocation of the hip treated by three methods were followed up to a mean age of 27.3 years. Standard radiographic measurements of hip joint morphology, including stereoscopic measurements of acetabular and femoral neck anteversion, were made. The Severin score of the hip joint, but not acetabular or femoral neck anteversion, was related to symptoms. Hips treated by femoral derotation osteotomy had superior results to hips treated by traction reduction alone. Both of these methods gave much better results than treatment by closed manipulative reduction. T

Current concepts in isolated and combined injuries of the medial collateral ligament complex-Part I: Anatomy, biomechanics, clinical and radiological examination of the medial collateral ligament of the knee.

Injuries involving the medial collateral ligament (MCL), or combined injuries to both the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and MCL, are common and present considerable diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Better understanding of MCL anatomy and biomechanics, especially in combined ACL-MCL injuries, has driven the need for updated clinical examination and treatment approaches. The MCL complex comprises the superficial MCL (sMCL), deep MCL (dMCL), and the posteromedial complex (PMC), which includes the posterior oblique ligament (POL). Additional contributors to medial knee stability include t

Surgical anatomy and nuances of the expanded endonasal transdorsum sellae and posterior clinoidectomy approach to the interpeduncular and prepontine cisterns: a stepwise cadaveric dissection of various pituitary gland transpositions.

BACKGROUND: Excelsior knowledge of endoscopic anatomy and techniques to remove the natural barriers preventing full endonasal access to the interpeduncular and prepontine cisterns determines the ease of transposing the pituitary gland (hypophysiopexy) preserving the glandular function without manipulating the optic apparatus and the oculomotor nerves. METHODS: Throughout stepwise cadaveric dissections, we describe the expanded endonasal approach (EEA) to the interpeduncular and prepontine cisterns with special references to the intricate anatomy of the region and techniques for hypophysiopexy

Rationale and Options for Choosing an Optimal Closure Technique for Primary Midsagittal Osteochondrotomy of the Sternum. Part 1: A Theoretical and Critical Review of Functional Anatomy, Biomechanics, and Fracture Healing.

The sternum is central in binding the bilateral costal structures to form the anterior wall of the thorax. The airtight subatmospheric pressure cavity of the thorax during respiration and episodes of cough produces significant dynamic forces acting perpetually on its walls, influencing functions of the contained viscera. The embryonic development of the sternum concurs with that of the heart and parts of the pectoral girdle. Any imperfection of the sternum, whether congenital or iatrogenic, can significantly compromise the normal physiology of the thoracic wall and cardio-respiratory systems.
