Vitamin D deficiency and atopic dermatitis severity in a Bangladeshi population living in East London: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Atopic eczema is a common, chronic, inflammatory skin condition with considerable heterogeneity. South Asian people living in the UK frequently have low serum vitamin D3 (25(OH)D3), and those with atopic disease can present with severe eczema. The association between vitamin D deficiency and eczema severity, and the role of vitamin D supplementation in atopic eczema is inconsistent, and under-researched in people with Asian ancestry. OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study investigates the association between serum 25(OH)D3 and eczema severity in a cohort of South Asian children an

Determinants of pre-vaccination antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2: a population-based longitudinal study (COVIDENCE UK).

BACKGROUND: Prospective population-based studies investigating multiple determinants of pre-vaccination antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 are lacking. METHODS: We did a prospective population-based study in SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-naive UK adults recruited between May 1 and November 2, 2020, without a positive swab test result for SARS-CoV-2 prior to enrolment. Information on 88 potential sociodemographic, behavioural, nutritional, clinical and pharmacological risk factors was obtained through online questionnaires, and combined IgG/IgA/IgM responses to SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein were determined

Rolling out the radical cure for vivax malaria in Asia: a qualitative study among policy makers and stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Wide-spread implementation of treatment regimens for the radical cure of vivax malaria is hindered by a range of factors. This has resulted in an increase in the relative proportion of vivax malaria and is an important obstacle in the achievement of global malaria elimination by 2030. The main objective of this study was to explore the current policies guiding the treatment plans on vivax malaria, and the factors affecting the implementation of radical cure in South/South East Asian and Asian Pacific countries. METHODS: This was a qualitative study among respondents who represente

Do ethnicity, degree of family relationship, and the spondyloarthritis subtype in affected relatives influence the association between a positive family history for spondyloarthritis and HLA-B27 carriership? Results from the worldwide ASAS cohort.

BACKGROUND: The Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society (ASAS) defines a positive family history (PFH) of spondyloarthritis (SpA) as the presence of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), acute anterior uveitis (AAU), reactive arthritis (ReA), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and/or psoriasis in first-degree relatives (FDR) or second-degree relatives (SDR). In two European cohorts, a PFH of AS and AAU, but not other subtypes, was associated with human leukocyte antigen B27 (HLA-B27) carriership in patients suspected of axial SpA (axSpA). Because the importance of ethnicity or degree of fa

UK Food Standards Agency Workshop Report: an investigation of the relative contributions of diet and sunlight to vitamin D status.

The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) convened an international group of scientific experts to review three Agency-funded projects commissioned to provide evidence for the relative contributions of two sources, dietary vitamin D intake and skin exposure to UVB rays from sunlight, to vitamin D status. This review and other emerging evidence are intended to inform any future risk assessment undertaken by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition. Evidence was presented from randomised controlled trials to quantify the amount of vitamin D required to maintain a serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD

Finite nucleos(t)ide analog therapy for functional cure in HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B: Recent development in the paradigm shift.

Long-term nucleos(t)ide analog (Nuc) therapy in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) may lead to HBV suppression, ALT normalization, improvement of histological lesions, and prevention of liver disease progression, but rarely achieve HBsAg loss, the hallmark of functional cure. HBeAg-negative patients with CHB have often been recommended to continue Nuc therapy until HBsAg loss, which usually means indefinitely. However, long-term/lifelong Nuc therapy is associated with increasing costs and concerns of adverse outcomes subsequent to poor adherence and/or self-cessation/loss-to-follow-up. Hence, 2012 Asia

Effects of a culturally tailored intervention on medication adherence in Chinese and Vietnamese Americans with hepatitis B: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Asian Americans are disproportionately affected by chronic hepatitis B (CHB), which is caused by infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). While adherence to antiviral medication is an effective practical approach to managing CHB and preventing liver cancer, medication adherence rates among Chinese and Vietnamese Americans with CHB, two vulnerable yet understudied populations, remain largely unknown. METHODS: We designed and implemented a randomized controlled clinical trial to investigate the potential improvement of long-term adherence to HBV medication in Asian American populat

Measuring Doxycycline Postexposure Prophylaxis Use Relative to Sexually Transmitted Infection Rates at a San Francisco STI Clinic Reveals Racial Inequities in Disease Prevention Impact.

BACKGROUND: Doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP) must reach people at high risk for bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to reduce STI rates and inequities. PrEP-to-Need Ratios (PNR) identified inequities in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) by measuring PrEP prescriptions relative to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) rates. We evaluated a novel application of the PNR framework to doxyPEP for STIs to identify inequities in doxyPEP by race/ethnicity. METHODS: Using cross-sectional clinical and surveillance datasets, we compared doxyPEP use relative to STI diagnoses, a meas

Exploring the mediating role of blood metabolites in the relationship between gut microbiota and gastric cancer risk: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have established correlations between gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis, circulating metabolite alterations, and gastric cancer (GC) risk. However, the causal nature of these associations remains uncertain. METHODS: We utilized summary data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on GM (European, n=8,956), blood metabolites (European, n=120,241; East Asian, n=4,435), and GC (European, n=476,116; East Asian, n=167,122) to perform a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, investigating the causal effects of GM and metabolites on GC risk. Additionally, we c
