Vasopressin released by nicotine in the monkey.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of i.v. nicotine on plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP), plasma osmolality, and behavior in the conscious monkey. Adult, female, chronically prepared monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were studied with i.v. infusion of 5% dextrose and water in control experiments without change in parameters. Nicotine infusion (100 mug/kg/min) in 14 experiments produced a significant increase in plasma AVP from control levels of 0.6 +/- 0.5 muU/ml to end-of-infusion levels of 35 +/- 17 muU/ml (p less than 0.001). During the 15-20 min of nicotine infusion, a behavio

High-fidelity avatars for behavior and cognition research in virtual environments: An accessible construction method for scientists.

Virtual reality is increasingly employed in behavioral research, providing immersive environments that combine high levels of experimental control with ecological validity. Within virtual reality, humans are represented by digital characters - or avatars - whose realism and behavioral fidelity are crucial for studying social cognition. This study introduces an accessible method for constructing avatars with facial animations of eye gaze and expression that can be used by behavioral scientists. In two pre-registered experiments, we validate the use of these avatars for psychological research. I

Time of the Day of Traumatic Brain Injury has Minimal Effects on Behavioral and Histological Outcomes in Mice of Both Sexes.

Transcription of > 50% of the mammalian coding genes follows circadian rhythm in an organ-specific manner. Recent findings highlighted the influence of time of the day in the progression of various neurological diseases and therapies. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of time of occurrence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on behavioral and neuropathological outcomes in mice of both sexes. Following a controlled cortical impact injury induced between Zeitgeber time (ZT)1-4 or ZT13-16, behavioral deficits and brain damage were evaluated. There were no significant differences in post-T

Rumination in the Context of Anger and Sadness: Differential Effects on State Agitation.

BACKGROUND: Agitation is an important transdiagnostic factor for several mental health disorders and a significant risk factor for dangerous or maladaptive coping behaviors. How an individual responds to experiences of agitation itself may also play a crucial role in conferring risk towards maladaptive behaviors. Specifically, ruminating on high arousal emotions, such as anger, will also be more likely to initiate and maintain agitation, thereby increasing risk for impulsive and maladaptive behaviors. METHODS: Undergraduate students (N=117) were randomly assigned to an emotion induction condi

Increased functional connectivity after stroke correlates with behavioral scores in non-human primate model.

Here we characterized the functional connectivity (FC) changes occurring after a controlled MCA stroke in a primate model. We hypothesize that if FC can inform about the neural changes after a stroke in the non-human primate (NHP) stroke model, then significant FC changes after the stroke would have to correlate with the remaining behavioral capacities. Eleven cynomolgus monkeys underwent an experimental middle cerebral artery occlusion while five monkeys remained as the control group. One month later the neurological function was assessed with a set of fine motor tasks and the Nonhuman Primat

Impulsivity, alexithymia and dissociation among pathological gamblers in different therapeutic settings: A multisample comparison study.

Since many psychopathological traits seem to be related to Gambling Disorder (GD), impulsivity, alexithymia and dissociation could play a central role in gambling behaviors, particularly in pathological gambling. We test this hypothesis in four distinct samples of gamblers, three undergoing different types of treatments and a control group. The study sample consists of 204 subjects (males 87.3%, mean age=47.75 years, SD=12.08) divided into four groups: (1) 59 subjects belonging to an Outpatients Treatment Program in the National Health System (NHS); (2) 60 subjects of an Outpatients Self-Help

Retention in medication-assisted treatment for opiate dependence: A systematic review.

Retention in medication-assisted treatment among opiate-dependent patients is associated with better outcomes. This systematic review (55 articles, 2010-2014) found wide variability in retention rates (i.e., 19%-94% at 3-month, 46%-92% at 4-month, 3%-88% at 6-month, and 37%-91% at 12-month follow-ups in randomized controlled trials), and identified medication and behavioral therapy factors associated with retention. As expected, patients who received naltrexone or buprenorphine had better retention rates than patients who received a placebo or no medication. Consistent with prior research, met

A comparison of adult outcomes for males compared to females following pediatric traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the association between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors and determine if these apply equally to males and females. METHOD: The association between adult psychosocial functioning and childhood TBI for males and females was examined using groups with a history of childhood TBI (mild or moderate/severe) or orthopedic injury (injury age, 1-17, assessed 18-31 at >5 years postinjury), including rates of depression and anxiety disorders, substance abuse/dependence and offending behavior. Phenotypic segregation of aphakia and Pitx3-null mutants reveals that Pitx3 deficiency increases consolidation of specific movement components.

Deficiency of the meso-diencephalic dopamine (mdDA) neuron specific transcription factor Pitx3 in aphakia (ak) mice results in the loss of the substantia nigra compacta (SNc). Concomitantly, reduced spontaneous locomotor behavior, symptoms reminiscent to those in Parkinson's disease, has been reported. However, the ak mouse line originates from the 1960s and has been compared to C57BL/6J inbred controls. Therefore, to define Pitx3 gene function in baseline and novelty-induced locomotor behavior and mdDA neuronal activity, we analyzed Pitx3-deficiency in a controlled genetic and epigenetic back

Behavioral effects of amphetamine in streptozotocin-treated rats.

Experimentally-induced diabetes can modify the behavioral and neurochemical effects of drugs acting on dopamine systems, possibly through insulin-related regulation of dopamine transporter activity. In this study, several behavioral procedures were used to examine possible changes in sensitivity to amphetamine and other drugs in rats rendered diabetic by a single injection of streptozotocin. Conditioned place preference developed to food (Froot Loops) in both control and diabetic rats, demonstrating that conditioned place preference with tactile stimuli can occur in streptozotocin-treated rats

Adherence to Recommended Preventive Behaviors During the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Role of Empathy and Perceived Health Threat.

BACKGROUND: Coping via empathic responding may play a role in preventive behavior engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic, and unlike trait empathy, is a potentially alterable target for changing health behavior. PURPOSE: Our goal was to examine the role of empathic responding in preventive behavior engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic, independent of trait empathy and perceived threat of COVID-19. METHODS: Participants (N = 2,841) completed a baseline survey early in the pandemic, and a follow-up survey approximately 2 weeks later (M = 13.50 days, SD = 5.61). Preventive health behaviors,

Repeated nicotine vapor inhalation induces behavioral sensitization in male and female C57BL/6 mice.

Electronic cigarette use has significantly increased over the past decade. However, there is limited preclinical research on the behavioral and abuse-related effects of nicotine vapor inhalation in rodents. The present study evaluates the effects of repeated nicotine vapor inhalation in male and female mice using a nicotine behavioral sensitization model. Male and female C57BL/6 mice were administered vaporized nicotine (0-10.0 mg/ml) or the positive control of intraperitoneally administered nicotine (0.5 mg/kg) once daily for 5 days, and locomotor activity was assessed. Body temperatures were

Ifenprodil infusion in agranular insular cortex alters social behavior and vocalizations in rats exposed to moderate levels of ethanol during prenatal development.

Moderate exposure to alcohol during development leads to subtle neurobiological and behavioral effects classified under the umbrella term fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Alterations in social behaviors are a frequently observed consequence of maternal drinking, as children with FASDs display inappropriate aggressive behaviors and altered responses to social cues. Rodent models of FASDs mimic the behavioral alterations seen in humans, with rats exposed to ethanol during development displaying increased aggressive behaviors, decreased social investigation, and altered play behavior. Evidence of phenotypic and genetic relationships between sociality, emotional reactivity and production traits in Japanese quail.

The social behavior of animals, which is partially controlled by genetics, is one of the factors involved in their adaptation to large breeding groups. To understand better the relationships between different social behaviors, fear behaviors and production traits, we analyzed the phenotypic and genetic correlations of these traits in Japanese quail by a second generation crossing of two lines divergently selected for their social reinstatement behavior. Analyses of results for 900 individuals showed that the phenotypic correlations between behavioral traits were low with the exception of signi

Behavioral effects of cocaine on a transgenic mouse model of cortical-limbic compulsion.

We previously created a transgenic mouse model of cortical-limbic induced compulsions in which dopamine D1 receptor-expressing (D1+) neurons in restricted regional subsets of the cortex and amygdala express a neuropotentiating cholera toxin (CT) transgene. These 'D1CT' mice engage in complex behavioral abnormalities uniquely resembling human compulsions, such as non-aggressive biting of cagemates during grooming, repeated leaping and episodes of perseverance of any and all normal behaviors. Because both compulsions and cocaine-induced behaviors may represent forms of psychomotor activation tha

Sex differences in autism-like behavior and dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra of juvenile mice prenatally exposed to valproate.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication and repetitive and restricted behaviors. Sex dimorphism in the brain, including midbrain dopaminergic circuits, can explain differences in social behavior impairment and stereotypic behaviors between male and female individuals with ASD. These abnormal patterns may be due to alterations in dopamine synthesis in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and substantia nigra (SN). We used an autism-like mouse model by prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure. CD1 pregnant female mice were injected with 500 mg

Motivational interviewing in promoting oral health: A literature review.

Behavioral sciences are a group of disciplines that involve the study of human actions. Various behavioral models have been used in the past 50 years in behavior modification. One behavioral model currently being studied for its application in oral healthcare is motivational interviewing (MI). Motivational interviewing is a patient-centered psycho-behavioral method used in various fields of medicine and psychology to help patients change their health-affecting behaviors. Effective health promotion is important, since in developed countries, the majority of deaths and diseases are caused by chr

Spatiotemporal Characteristics of Neural Dynamics in Theta Oscillations Related to the Inhibition of Habitual Behavior.

The human brain carries out cognitive control for the inhibition of habitual behaviors by suppressing some familiar but inappropriate behaviors instead of engaging specific goal-directed behavior flexibly in a given situation. To examine the characteristics of neural dynamics related to such inhibition of habitual behaviors, we used a modified rock-paper-scissors (RPS) task that consisted of a basic, a lose-, and a win-conditioned game. Spectral and phase synchrony analyses were conducted to examine the acquired electroencephalogram signals across the entire brain during all RPS tasks. Tempora

Occipital cortical thickness predicts performance on pitch and musical tasks in blind individuals.

The behavioral and neurofunctional consequences of blindness often include performance enhancements and recruitment of occipital regions for nonvisual tasks. How the neuroanatomical changes resulting from this sensory loss relate to these functional changes is, however, less clear. Previous studies using cortical thickness (CT) measures have shown thicker occipital cortex in early-blind (EB) individuals compared with sighted controls. We hypothesized that this finding reflects the crossmodal plasticity often observed in blind individuals and thus could reflect behavioral adaptations. To addres

Risk compensation and vaccination: can getting vaccinated cause people to engage in risky behaviors?

BACKGROUND: Some believe that vaccinating young women against human papillomavirus (HPV) will increase their risky behavior. In more formal terms, vaccination lowers risk perception, and people compensate for their lower perceived risk by reducing other preventive behaviors. PURPOSE: We test several predictions from the risk compensation hypothesis in the context of vaccination behavior. METHODS: We obtained a random sample of adults (N=705), interviewing them by phone just as the Lyme disease vaccine first became available to the public and again 18 months later. Analyses controlled for age
