Fluoxetine hydrochloride is the first selective serotonin uptake inhibitor introduced commercially in the United States. This report describes preliminary clinical experience with fluoxetine in 10 children and adolescents, aged 8 to 15 years, with primary obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) or Tourette's syndrome (TS) plus OCD. In general, fluoxetine, which was administered from 4 to 20 weeks at a dosage of 10 or 40 mg per day, was well tolerated. Adverse effects included behavioral agitation/activation in four patients and mild gastrointestinal symptoms in two patients. No abnormalities were

The literature on spasmodic torticollis is critically reviewed. The currently most popular etiological hypothesis characterizes torticollis as an extrapyramidal disorder, the symptoms of which are aggravated by stress, but there is no unequivocal evidence available to support this view. Psychological mechanisms have been suggested but not elaborated or tested in any detail. A wide range of treatments has been advocated but controlled studies have not been reported, and the problems of assessing outcome have never been tackled adequately. Behavioral treatments have been evaluated more rigorousl

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hoarding is a behavior that occurs across a variety of disorders, including hoarding disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and schizophrenia. Hoarding is also a normative human behavior within certain contexts, including the recent coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, when individuals became panicked about the availability of products such as toilet paper and antibacterial wipes. Previous research suggests that personality traits and personality disorder symptoms may be linked with hoarding behaviors. The purpose of this review is to provide a snapshot of recent resea

Several studies report the incidence of traumatic experiences in community and clinical samples, and substantial research demonstrates the impact of traumatic events on mental health and suicidal behavior, but this area remains unexplored in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLC). Thus, this study aims to (1) describe traumatic experiences, mental health levels and suicidal behavior among individuals from Portugal, Brazil and African Countries with Portuguese as an Official Language (ACPOL); (2) assess correlations between traumatic experiences and mental health and suicidal beh

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that is frequently diagnosed in children and adolescents. In pediatric OCD, family plays an important role in the development and maintenance of the disease. In this relationship, both genetic and behavioral factors, such as parental modeling and family accommodation, are significant. Parental modeling concerns the daily enactment of dysfunctional behavioral patterns by a parent with OCD, which may influence children. Family accommodation, in contrast, describes the direct participation of parents in their child's compulsive ri

PURPOSE: This study examined the association between children's emotion regulatory processes and parents' emotional problems.
DESIGN: A 5-year longitudinal study of families from Northwestern United States with data collected over 3 time points. Families were recruited in an effort to oversample for multiracial and African American families because these families have historically not been well represented in research studies.
METHOD: Parental hostility characteristics and subclinical levels of depression were assessed in combination with teachers' reports of children's externalizing and int

Rarely screened in psychiatric patients, primary and/or secondary Carnitine deficiency could be influencing and/or mimicking the mood symptoms of our patient population. The brain and specifically neurons are highly vulnerable to impairments in oxidative metabolism, which can lead to neuronal cell death and disorders of neurotransmitters causing changes in cognition and behavior. For this reason, identification of this disorder is important since its treatment could result in symptom improvement and better quality of life of our patients. We present a case where exacerbation of mood symptoms w

Cannabis use is prevalent among young adults and is influenced by a range of psychological, behavioral, and environmental factors. Although some individuals report using cannabis to manage stress or trauma-related symptoms, the relative contribution of early adversity and concurrent psychosocial factors to cannabis use-and whether these associations differ by sex-remains unclear. This study examined the extent to which adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), depressive and anxiety symptoms, alcohol use, and dissociative experiences are associated with cannabis use in men and women. A total of 1,

BACKGROUND: Persistent post-concussion symptoms affect a substantial subgroup of individuals following mild traumatic brain injury. Intensive exposure therapy may be an effective intervention by directly targeting psychological mechanisms underlying symptom maintenance. This study provides insight into the clinical processes of this therapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Therapy session-level data from two single-case experimental design studies with a total of eight participants was analyzed using mixed-methods.
RESULTS: The most frequently targeted feared expectations included: cognitive failure,

INTRODUCTION: Although motor symptoms are the defining feature of dystonia, increasing evidence indicates that non-motor symptoms substantially affect patients' quality of life. Among these, social cognition remains insufficiently explored, particularly in relation to global cognitive functioning and affective-behavioral dimensions.
METHODS: In this study, 25 patients diagnosed with Idiopathic Focal Dystonia (IFD) and 25 healthy controls (HCs) underwent assessments of social cognition (cognitive and affective Theory of Mind [ToM] and empathy), global cognitive functioning (MoCA), depression (

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) such as frequency, urgency, and sensation of incomplete emptying are frequently attributed to bladder or urothelial disorders, but pelvic floor myofascial dysfunction is underrecognized as an etiologic factor. To present a conceptual framework for myofascial pelvic floor dysfunction (MPFD) as a contributor to urinary symptoms, review its urologic manifestations, discuss, and explore occult contributing factors, and propose integrated diagnostic and interventional therapeutic strategies. This is a narrative review and conceptual synthesis anchored on recent o

Depressive symptoms are a prevalent mental health concern among older adults. This study examined whether the frequency of receptive arts engagement was associated with depressive symptom scores through leisure-related relaxation and subjective well-being in a specified serial mediation model. Using cross-sectional data from the 2023 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), we analyzed 2332 adults aged 60 years or older. Hierarchical regression and bias-corrected bootstrap mediation analyses with 5000 resamples were conducted to examine the proposed model. We found that more frequent art activiti

INTRODUCTION: Clinical features associated with accurate clinico-pathologic correlation within cognitive-predominant progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) presentations have not been extensively studied. We identified features affecting PSP diagnosis within the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) dataset, a cognitive/behavioral research database.
METHODS: Autopsied NACC participants with clinical or neuropathologic PSP diagnoses were categorized by diagnostic modality (Clinical-only, Neuropathology-only, both). Group differences in clinical, demographic, neuropsychologic, and neuro

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms often occur in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and exacerbate the pathogenesis of AD. However, the neural circuit mechanisms underlying the AD-associated depression remain unclear. The serotonergic system plays crucial roles in both AD and depression.
METHODS: We used a combination of in vivo trans-synaptic circuit-dissecting anatomical approaches, chemogenetic manipulations, optogenetic manipulations, pharmacological methods, behavioral testing, and electrophysiological recording to investigate dorsal raphe nucleus serotonergic circuit in AD-associated

Lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) can manifest as a spectrum of voiding symptoms in childhood, including urinary urgency, frequency, hesitancy, and incontinence. In severe cases, it can lead to frequent urinary tract infections, hydronephrosis, kidney scarring, and chronic kidney disease. Non-neurogenic neurogenic bladder (NNNB) is a diagnosis of exclusion in which children develop discoordination between the detrusor smooth muscle and external urethral sphincter in the absence of neurological or obstructive lesions, resulting in severe LUTD. Historically, such disorders of voiding were t

In a comparative cross-sectional study, 26 adult individuals with clinically typical, genetically confirmed Dravet syndrome (DS) and an equal number of individuals with early onset, problematic epilepsy, and intellectual disability (ID) of comparable severity were included. The aim of the study was to find out whether patients with DS could be clearly distinguished from the comparison group with regard to neurological and behavioral symptoms. Significant differences were found in that individuals with DS clearly more frequently exhibited a symptom cluster characterized by bradykinesia, hypomim

INTRODUCTION: Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2 disease) is a rare pediatric neurodegenerative condition, which is usually fatal by mid-adolescence. Seizures are one of the most common early symptoms of CLN2 disease, but patients often experience language deficits, movement disorders, and behavioral problems. Diagnosis of CLN2 disease is challenging (particularly when differentiating between early-onset developmental, metabolic, or epileptic syndromes), and diagnostic delays often overlap with rapid disease progression. An enzyme replacement therapy (cerliponase alfa) is now availabl
