Four fetuses with severe rhesus isoimmunization were transfused with packed red blood cells directly into the umbilical vein. The outcome was successful in three. In one infant, this ultrasound-guided technique resulted in resolution of severe fetal hydrops at 27 weeks, allowing delivery of a healthy nonhydropic infant at 33 weeks, and in the other three infants in prolongation of the pregnancy. To determine whether unconventional pathogens causing subacute spongiform encephalopathy may be present in blood products, a newly developed hepatitis B vaccine and a widely used blood product were injected into mice and rats. As only a few aged mice in the test and the control groups showed spongiform encephalopathic change of a sparse or mild degree and which differed from that seen in rodents infected with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the presence of unconventional pathogens in the tested inocula can be ruled out.

The ease with which Mycoplasma hominis can be recovered and the frequency of its occurrence in septicemia may not be fully appreciated. We detected the growth of M. hominis radiometrically with an automated blood culture instrument. We measured the cutaneous blood flow in positive standard patch test reactions by use of the laser-Doppler technique. The results were compared with conventional visual readings to develop a quantitative method. The present study investigated the feasibility of basal continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) in four patients with postoperative sepsis or extensive burns during continuous enteral hyperalimentation with 2,500 to 3,000 calories/day, containing approximately 390 g of simple carbohydrates. Peripheral blood T lymphocytes and T lymphocytes subsets have been quantified by an indirect immunofluorescence technique using monoclonal antibodies, in 10 patients with fatty liver, 8 with acute alcoholic hepatitis (AAH), 10 with inactive cirrhosis and 7 with cirrhosis and AAH. Fetal blood sampling was possible during the third trimester of pregnancy by direct puncture of the umbilical vein near its placental insertion, using a needle guided by ultrasound. Between 2 and 6 ml of pure fetal blood were obtained from three pregnancies without adverse effect on the fetuses. If this new procedure proves to have an acceptable complication rate it should widen the field of prenatal diagnosis for the detection of treatable diseases of the fetus.

We evaluated blood concentrations and clinical findings in 17 cases of isopropanol (IPROH) ingestion seen over a 8.5 year period at our institution. Eight ingestions involved IPROH alone ("pure") while the remainder involved at least ethanol in addition to IPROH ("mixed"). Fourteen patients had a history of alcoholism. Admission blood IPROH concentrations ranged from 5 to 70 mg/dL while the concentration of the acetone metabolite ranged from nondetectable to 220 mg/dL. Thirty-eight patients who ingested ethchlorvynol were seen at our institution over an 8.7 year period. Eleven involved ethchlorvynol alone ("pure") while the remainder included at least one other drug ("mixed"). Twenty-three of the patients were women. Six patients required hospitalization.
