Spin trapping with cyclic nitrones coupled to electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) enables the detection and characterization of oxygen-derived free radicals, such as superoxide and hydroxyl radicals, in living cells. Detection is usually performed on cell suspensions introduced in glass capillaries, gas-permeable tubing, or flat cells, even when cells normally require attachment for growth. However, radical production may be influenced by cell adhesion, while enzymatic or mechanical cell harvesting may damage the cells and alter their metabolic rates. Here, we describe the detection on adher

Diabetes affects approximately 30 million persons in the United States. Diabetes ketoacidosis is one of the most serious and acute complications of diabetes. At the time of presentation and during treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), several metabolic and electrolyte derangements can ultimately result in respiratory compromise. Most commonly, hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia and hypophosphatemia can eventually lead to respiratory muscles failure. Furthermore, tachypnea, hyperpnea and more severely, Kussmaul breathing pattern can develop. Also, hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic pulmonary edema ca

Polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM) are different disease subtypes of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). The main clinical features of PM and DM include progressive symmetric, predominantly proximal muscle weakness. Laboratory findings include elevated creatine kinase (CK), autoantibodies in serum, and inflammatory infiltrates in muscle biopsy. Dermatomyositis can also involve a characteristic skin rash. Both polymyositis and dermatomyositis can present with extramuscular involvement. The causative factor is agnogenic activation of immune system, leading to immunologic attacks o

Pulmonary bed can retain microparticles (MP) larger than their capillaries' diameter, hence we offer a promising way for lung passive targeting following intravenous (IV) administration. In this study, enoxaparin (Enox)-albumin microspheres (Enox-Alb MS) were, optimally, developed as lung targeted sustained release MP for IV use. Lung tolerability and targeting efficiency of Enox-Alb MS were tested, and the pharmacokinetic profile following IV administration to albino rats was constructed. In vivo studies confirmed high lung targeting efficiency of Enox-Alb MS with lack of potential tissue tox

BACKGROUND: Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is a systemic disorder characterized by leukocytoclastic vasculitis involving the capillaries and by the deposition of IgA immune complexes. An association between HSP and atypical bacteria is uncommon in children.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Here we report three cases of children, aged 5, 4 and 16 years, who were diagnosed with HSP associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae or Chlamydia pneumoniae infection. In all presented cases, persistent cutaneous manifestations and abdominal pain were resistant to antibiotics and corticosteroids, but resolved during 48 h

Acute clinical antibody-mediated rejection is currently defined by (1), an acute renal failure occurring during the first months following transplantation, (2), at least a microcirculation inflammation (glomerulitis and peritubular capillaritis) on kidney biopsy and (3), the presence in peripheral blood of donor specific antibodies, mostly anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies. The prognosis of this rejection is scored using the severity of vascular lesions and the positivity of C4d on peritubular capillaries. Recently, a subclinical variety of antibody-mediated rejection was recognize

Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is a systemic disorder characterized by leukocytoclastic vasculitis involving the capillaries and the deposition of IgA immune complexes. Renal involvement is the principal cause of morbidity and mortality in children with HSP. We report here a 13-year-old girl with Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN) of International Study of Kidney Disease in Children (ISKDC) grade VI and persistent nephrotic syndrome despite receiving conventional therapy, such as prednisolone, methylprednisolone and urokinase pulse therapy and plasmapheresis (PP). The patient was treate

The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the clinical association of antiphospholipid autoantibodies (aPL) with a syndrome of hypercoagulability that can affect any blood vessel, irrespective of type or size. Involvement of larger vessels, such as arteries or veins, manifests in the form of thrombosis or embolism, whereas involvement of smaller vessels, including capillaries, arterioles, and venules, manifests as thrombotic microangiopathy. Virtually any organ in the body, including the kidney, can be affected. Here, we review the basic principles and rece

Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is a form of systemic vasculitis involving both arterioles and capillaries. HSP frequently is seen in children between the ages of 2 and 11 years, though adults with this disease are occasionally encountered. Although it primarily is a disease of early childhood, it can occur at any age. The clinical manifestations include a classic tetrad: rash, arthralgias, abdominal pain and renal disease. However, it may affect almost any other bodily tissue, such as myocardium, lungs, ureter and nervous system. Pulmonary hemorrhage is a rare complication of HSP, which largel

Angiogenesis or the formation of new vessels out of pre-existing capillaries is a sequence of events that is fundamental to physiology of the female reproductive tract and also pathologic processes such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Many factors include vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), angiopoietins and others involved in the regulation of angiogenesis have been identified. There are some endocrine control mechanisms, which stimulate or inhibit the angiogenesis. The studies indicate that the normal processes of folliculogenesis, ovulation and corpus luteum function in the ova

We report the identification and characterization of a novel cytokine-like gene family using structure-based methods to search for novel four-helix-bundle cytokines in genomics databases. There are four genes in this family, FAM3A, FAM3B, FAM3C, and FAM3D, each encoding a protein (224-235 amino acids) with a hydrophobic leader sequence. Northern analysis indicates that FAM3B is highly expressed in pancreas, FAM3D in placenta, and FAM3A and FAM3C in almost all tissues. Immunohistochemistry showed that FAM3A is expressed prominently in the vascular endothelium, particularly capillaries. We found

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granulomata belong to the group of inflammatory pseudotumours. They consist of granulation tissue usually following inflammatory processes or trauma.
PATIENT: We report on a 86-year old female suffering from chronic dacryocystitis. In the course of the treatment exstirpation of the lacrimal sac was performed. The removed tissue was analysed histologically.
RESULTS: Histological examination revealed a dense lymphoplasmacellular infiltration underlying the epithelium of the lacrimal sac. A mushroom-like tumour rising into the lumen of the lacrimal sac could be observed. Th

The contact thermometry has been performed at the center of lesions, at the periphery and at the adjoining healthy skin in 10 patients with alopecia areata (AA) of the scalp. The lowest temperature was recorded in the center of lesions (approximately 33.55 degrees C), slightly higher in the periphery (approximately 33.71 degrees C) and the highest in the adjoining healthy skin (approximately 34.01 degrees C). The authors suggest the skin temperature to be the result of the degree of vascularization. The obtained results were examined in reference to the results published elsewhere on the light

It has been reported that coronary diseases in patients with Fabry's disease are induced by deposits in endothelial cells and coronary smooth muscle cells. Most of those are ischemia due to stenosis. This report describes a case of patient with Fabry's disease who showed severe vasospasms without coronary artery stenosis during acetylcholine loaded coronary angiography. In this case, a myocardial biopsy revealed that the deposits in the endothelial cells of the myocardial capillaries were lamellated appearance. Recently, it is reported that endothelial cell damage could be an important cause o

Twenty-two consecutive patients with subacromial impingement syndrome underwent arthroscopic subacromial decompression. Measurements of the subacromial space pressure and the blood pressure were recorded along with the clarity of the visual field. The clarity of the visual field was objectively determined based on the pressure at which bleeding was observed from trabecular bone or the soft tissue capillaries. A direct correlation was found between systolic blood pressure (SBP), subacromial space pressure (SASP), and the clarity of the visual field. On average, maintaining a pressure difference

Although renal manifestations of the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) have received scarce attention until recently, the kidney probably is a major target organ in APS. Thrombosis may develop at any location within renal vessels, ie, renal artery trunk or branches, intrarenal arteries or arterioles, glomerular capillaries, and renal vein. The clinical consequences consist of highly variable degrees of proteinuria; systemic hypertension ranging from mild to malignant; cortical necrosis; thrombotic microangiopathy, pregnancy-associated or not; and slowly to rapidly progressive renal failure that

Traditionally leukocytes have been regarded as beneficial cells, owing to their immunologic and antimicrobial activity. Recent evidence suggests, however, an additional role of granulocytes and monocytes as mediators of cardiovascular complications, such as ischemia, reperfusion, diabetes, physiologic shock, venous ulceration, and other conditions. Granulocytes and monocytes have a large volume, and stiff cytoplasm; they have the ability to adhere to endothelium and to other substrates; and they exert several forms of cytotoxicity. Granulocytes and monocytes may be trapped in the microcirculat

Proton pump inhibitors are highly effective for gastric acid secretion and have been shown to be superior to histamine H2-receptor antagonists. The superiority of proton pump inhibitors over H2-receptor antagonists was more pronounced in duodenal ulcers. Omeprazole reduced the time required by H2-receptor antagonists the healing of duodenal ulcers by 2/3 to 1/2. On the other hand, unusual endoscopic findings, such as shallow white coat or protrusion of the ulcer floor, were noted in the healing stage of gastric ulcers with H2-receptor antagonists. Whereas these findings were rarely seen with c
