Potential for biodegradation and sorption of acetaminophen, caffeine, propranolol and acebutolol in lab-scale aqueous environments.

Sorption and combined sorption-biodegradation experiments were conducted in laboratory batch studies with 100 g soil/sediments and 500 mL water to investigate the fates in aqueous environments of acetaminophen, caffeine, propranolol, and acebutolol, four frequently used and often-detected pharmaceuticals. All four compounds have demonstrated significant potential for degradation and sorption in natural aqueous systems. For acetaminophen, biodegradation was found to be a primary mechanism for degradation, with a half-life (t(1/2)) for combined sorption-biodegradation of 2.1 days; in contrast, s

Perioperative considerations in diabetic patients.

Diabetes mellitus is an increasingly common disease that affects people of all ages, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Diabetic patients require more frequent hospitalization, have greater lengths of stay, and cost more to manage than non-diabetics. The major risk factors for diabetics undergoing surgery are the end-organ diseases associated with diabetes: cardiovascular disease, autonomic neuropathy and immune deficiency. Physicians should pay extra attention to preoperative and preprocedure evaluation and treatment of these diseases to ensure optimal perioperative management.

Tonic nociceptinergic inputs to neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus contribute to sympathetic vasomotor tone and water and electrolyte homeostasis in conscious rats.

Central administration of nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) produces bradycardia, hypotension, diuresis, and antinatriuresis in rats. Because N/OFQ peptide (NOP) receptors exist in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus, we hypothesized that N/OFQ acts in the PVN to alter cardiovascular and renal function. To test this premise, N/OFQ (10 and 100 pmol) or artificial cerebrospinal fluid (vehicle) was microinjected into the right PVN of conscious, chronically instrumented rats infused i.v. with isotonic saline. After injection, N/OFQ, but not vehicle, dose-dependently decreased renal

Why are mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists cardioprotective?

Two clinical trials, the Randomized ALdosterone Evaluation Study (RALES) and the EPlerenone HEart failure and SUrvival Study (EPHESUS), have recently shown that mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) antagonists reduce mortality in patients with heart failure on top of ACE inhibition. This effect could not be attributed solely to blockade of the renal MR-mediated effects on blood pressure, and it has therefore been proposed that aldosterone, the endogenous MR agonist, also acts extrarenally, in particular in the heart. Indeed, MR are present in cardiac tissue, and possibly aldosterone synthesis occur

[Cortical arousal, autonomic arousal. Evaluation techniques and clinical importance].

The respiratory disorders expressed by obstructive hypopneas and apneas during sleep, as well as the sequences of crescendo in respiratory effort without hypopneas or apneas which define the upper airway resistance syndrome, terminate with (thanks to) an arousal, defined by EEG changes. In some cases, the activation of the central nervous system is restricted to a sympathetic activation, which has been mainly studied in the cardiovascular area, and is not always accompanied by a cortical arousal. Various approaches (heart rate, blood pressure, pulse transit time, peripheral arterial tonometry)

Pasteurella multocida in psittacines: prevalence, pathology, and characterization of isolates.

Although the pathogenicity of Pasteurella multocida for psittacines (parrots and their relatives) has been documented in several case reports, the associated pathologic syndromes have not been well defined nor have the isolates been characterized. In addition, the prevalence of P. multocida in psittacines has not been determined. Three hundred twenty-eight psittacines (253 clinically healthy and 75 clinically ill) were cultured for P. multocida. Pasteurella multocida was not isolated from the pharynx, choana, or cloaca of psittacines. However, in five dead psittacines submitted for necropsy, P

Diabetic autonomic neuropathy: abnormal cardiovascular reactions under general anesthesia.

The influence of diabetic autonomic neuropathy upon the behavior of the circulatory system was investigated in 56 patients who had undergone ophthalmological surgery. A standardized test combination (variability in heart rate during deep breathing. Valsalva ratio, 30:15 ratio, change in blood pressure from lying to standing, sustained handgrip test) was used to study the patients' cardiovascular reflectory reactions. The patients were then divided into the following groups: Group I, non-diabetics. Group II, diabetics without autonomic neuropathy. Group III, diabetics with autonomic neuropathy.

Response to hypercapnia and exercise hyperpnea in graded anesthesia.

We examined the relationship between response to hypercapnia and ventilatory response to exercise under graded anesthesia in eight dogs. The response to hypercapnia was measured by the CO2 rebreathing method under three grades of chloralose-urethan anesthesia. The degrees of response to hypercapnia (delta VE/delta PETCO2, 1 X min-1 X Torr-1) in light (L), moderate (M), and deep (D) anesthesia were 0.40 +/- 0.05 (mean +/- SE), 0.24 +/- 0.03, and 0.10 +/- 0.02, respectively, and were significantly different from each other. Under each grade of anesthesia, exercise was performed by electrically s

Neurogenic suppression of carotid sinus reflexes by vagal afferents in sodium-depleted dogs.

Reduction of sodium intake affects both the renin-angiotensin and sympathetic nervous systems, but the effects on the latter are less well understood. To clarify this relationship, the responsiveness of the baroreceptor reflex was compared in groups of normal and sodium-depleted dogs prepared with a single innervated carotid sinus and left vagus nerve after anesthesia with morphine-chloralose. Three weeks of sodium depletion did not affect the mean arterial blood pressure, but cardiac output (-50%) and stroke volume (-38%) were reduced, whereas there was a large compensatory increase in total

The sodium-potassium pump in volume expanded hypertension.

Decreased arterial Na+-K+ pump and cardiac Na+, K-+ATPase activities have now been demonstrated in several types of experimental volume expanded hypertension. The changes are not secondary to elevated pressure since they also occur in veins and right ventricle where the pressure is not elevated. Decreased arterial Na+-K+ pump activity can be reproduced by acute volume expansion of the normal rat and plasma extracts from this rat suppress pump activity when applied to arteries from another rat. Suppression of Na+-K+ pump activity in arteries, veins and heart, with ouabain for example, leads to

"More Kairos, Less Chronos": Sleep, circadian rhythms and the path to cardiovascular, neurological and metabolic protection.

Sleep supports cardiovascular, metabolic, neurologic, and psychological health. Beyond duration, circadian alignment is crucial because regular sleep, light exposure, feeding, and activity synchronize central and peripheral clocks. Modern chronodisruption from artificial light, irregular schedules, shift work, late eating, and insufficient sleep misaligns these rhythms and increases chronic disease risk. This review summarizes evidence linking sleep and circadian disruption to cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction, and neurodegeneration. The American Heart Association's Life's Essentia

Cardiometabolic protective mechanisms and efficacy of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in SLE.

SLE is a chronic autoimmune disease associated with substantial cardiovascular, metabolic and renal morbidity. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), initially developed for type 2 diabetes (T2D), have demonstrated beneficial effects beyond glucose lowering, including improvements in metabolic, cardiovascular and renal outcomes. These effects span multiple domains, including glycaemic control, body weight and blood pressure reduction, heart failure and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease outcomes, kidney function preservation and potential immunomodulatory pathways. This narrat

Exploiting a unified vascular framework to predict organ-specific complications and accomplish disease modification in systemic sclerosis.

Immune-mediated vascular endothelial injury is considered one of the earliest pathological features in systemic sclerosis and is thought to occur simultaneously within a broad range of organs, although typically clinically manifesting only as Raynaud's phenomenon in the early stages. Overt vascular systemic sclerosis manifestations include Raynaud's phenomenon, abnormal nailfold capillary morphology, digital ulcers, pulmonary arterial hypertension, cardiovascular disease (primary and coronary), telangiectasia, renal crisis, and gastric antral vascular ectasia. Tissue ischaemia might also contr

Cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction in post-COVID-19 syndrome: a major health-care burden.

Cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction (CVAD) is a malfunction of the cardiovascular system caused by deranged autonomic control of circulatory homeostasis. CVAD is an important component of post-COVID-19 syndrome, also termed long COVID, and might affect one-third of highly symptomatic patients with COVID-19. The effects of CVAD can be seen at both the whole-body level, with impairment of heart rate and blood pressure control, and in specific body regions, typically manifesting as microvascular dysfunction. Many severely affected patients with long COVID meet the diagnostic criteria for two com

Brain and Heart Interactions Delineating Cardiac Dysfunction in Four Common Neurological Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Neurological and cardiovascular disorders are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. While the effects of cardiovascular disease (CD) on the nervous system are well understood, understanding of the reciprocal relationship has only recently become clearer. Based on disability-adjusted life years, this systematic review and meta-analysis present the pooled incidence and association of CD in 4 selected common, noncommunicable neurological disorders: (1) migraine, (2) Alzheimer disease and other dementias, (3) epilepsy, and (4) head injury. Methamphetamine-induced cardiotoxicity: in search of protective transcriptional mechanisms.

Crystalline methamphetamine hydrochloride is an illegal drug with a high addictive potential, better known by its colloquial name "ice" or "crystal meth". The abuse of this drug has led to significant health problems worldwide. Like other amphetamine-type stimulants, chronic consumption of methamphetamine leads to direct toxic effects on the central nervous system, causing cognitive impairment, depressive behavior, and other severe neurological or psychiatric symptoms. Besides its neurotoxicity, the drug exhibits numerous deleterious effects on the cardiovascular system, including hypertension
