A fatal case of Harlequin ichthyosis: Experience from low-resource setting.

Harlequin ichthyosis is a severe and fatal presentation of ichthyosis with an autosomal recessive inheritance. Infants with Harlequin ichthyosis have a high mortality rate, and a dismal prognosis; therefore the majority of neonates die shortly after birth from infection, heat loss, dehydration, electrolytic imbalances, or respiratory distress. The aim of this case report was to present a fatal case of Harlequin ichthyosis with no family history of any inherited skin disorder. A 3-day-old baby was presented to the emergency room with congenital abnormalities at birth, fissured hyperkeratotic sk

Keratitis following leech therapy for periocular eczematous dermatitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The medicinal leech therapy (MLT) is a kind of complementary treatment method used for various diseases. The leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) have been used for more than 2500 years by surgeons. The substances presenting in the saliva of leeches have anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, platelet inhibitory, thrombin regulatory, analgesic, extracellular matrix degradative and antimicrobial effects. The method is cheap, easy to apply, effective and its mechanisms of action have been clarified for specific diseases. Infection particularly Aeromonas infection is the most common complication o

Delayed pharyngocutaneous fistula caused by molecular targeted therapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Molecular-targeted agents used as a treatment for cancer can cause some rare and serious adverse events such as, delayed wound healing. Depending on the anticancer drug used, temporary withdrawal may be recommended before and after surgery to avoid complications. Once a surgical incision has healed and closed completely, wounds rarely open because of the initiation of molecular targeted therapy several months to years after surgery. Here, we aimed to describe a rare complication of pharyngocutaneous fistula in two patients that was thought to be caused by molecular targeted therapy

Disseminated infection by Fusarium solani in acute lymphocytic leukemia: A case report.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the rate of immunosuppressed patients has increased rapidly. Invasive fungal infections usually occur in these patients, especially those who have had hematological malignances and received chemotherapy. Fusariosis is a rare pathogenic fungus, it can lead to severely invasive Fusarium infections. Along with the increased rate of immune compromised patients, the incidence of invasive Fusarium infections has also increased from the past few years. Early diagnosis and therapy are important to prevent further development to a more aggressive or disseminated infection.

Number of mesothelial cells as a measure of adequacy criteria for pleural effusions: A multi-institutional study.

BACKGROUND: The development of a terminology system is essential to allow uniformity in reporting serous fluid specimens. An important topic to cover is the issue of specimen adequacy. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate whether there is a correlation between number of mesothelial cells and overall improved sensitivity and adequacy control of tests. METHODS: Cases of negative pleural fluids with concomitant positive pleural biopsies were selected from two referral institutions, with observation of the number of mesothelial cells in 10 high-power fields, comparing the results with a con

Spanish multicentre study on morbidity and pathogenicity of tracheal bronchus in children.

Tracheal bronchus (TRB) has been generally considered an anatomical variant of the tracheobronchial tree without a precise pathological effect. Its prevalence is estimated to be between 0.2% to 3% of all children undergoing bronchoscopy and scientific information has been limited to case reports or small case series. Our working hypothesis was that TRB could trigger by itself recurrent or persistent respiratory symptoms. The objective of this retrospective and multicentre study of children with a diagnosis of TRB, coming from the main paediatric pulmonology units of Spain, was to determine the

Benign multicystic mesothelioma and peritoneal inclusion cysts: are they the same clinical and histopathological entities? A systematic review to find an evidence-based management.

PURPOSE: Peritoneal mesothelial cysts (PMC) are a clinical dilemma because of their true pathogenic nature. Many definitions have been associated with PMC, including "benign multicystic mesothelioma", "cystic mesothelioma", "multilocular peritoneal inclusion cysts", ''inflammatory cysts of the peritoneum" or "postoperative peritoneal cyst". METHODS: We herein performed a systematic review of the literature focusing on clinical and histopathological aspects of PMC, diagnosis, and therapies. Moreover, we described our experience with a case of PMC in a young female. RESULTS: Since there is oft

Management of infected carotid artery rupture.

Carotid artery rupture (CAR) is a life-threatening complication of head and neck cancer, and infection complicates its management. The purpose of this study was to review our experience with the treatment of infected CAR and to summarize the existing literature on this topic. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients treated in our department from 2000 to 2011 and re-analyzed cases reported in the literature during the same time period. We analyzed etiology, anatomic location, treatment, and rates of recurrent hemorrhage for each case. A total of 46 episodes of infected CAR o

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and autoimmunity: does gender matter?

Autoimmune disorders are more frequent in women, whereas most non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) are common in men; yet, sexspecific autoimmune–lymphoma associations are rarely reported. Detailed data on autoimmune disease were abstracted from medical records of 791 cases (including 316 diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs); 228 follicular lymphomas (FLs); 127 marginal zone lymphomas (MZLs); 64 T-cell lymphomas and 38 mantle cell lymphomas) and 872 controls. The combined prevalence of autoimmune disease was higher among women (15.7% controls; 19.7% cases) than men (6.6% controls; 14.5% cases), but

[Angle closure glaucoma in association with relative anterior microphthalmus (RAM) after premature birth-retinopathy (ROP)].

BACKGROUND: The infantile angle-closure glaucoma is a common and well characterized complication of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Progressive shallowing of the anterior chamber by retrolental fibrous masses is mostly responsible for the pressure elevation during the first years of life. Apart of this pathogenesis, ROP-associated glaucoma is totally different in cases that do not manifest until adulthood. Only few cases are described in the literature. CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old female patient presented with symptoms of acute intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation and fundus results of a cic

Minoxidil and Prostaglandin Analogs for Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) is common, distressing, and markedly impairs patients' quality of life. Although scalp cooling is the only approved preventive strategy, its effectiveness and accessibility remain limited. Therefore, alternative pharmacologic approaches, such as minoxidil and prostaglandin analogs, have been explored. METHODS: This scoping review aimed to explore the available evidence on minoxidil's efficacy and safety and the potential role of prostaglandin analogs in alopecia. PubMed, Cochrane Library, Medical Online, and Ichushi-Web were comprehensively sear
