Preliminary Study of Video-Based Pediatric Endoscopic Surgical Skill Assessment Using a Neonatal Esophageal Atresia/Tracheoesophageal Fistula Model.

PURPOSE: Thoracoscopic esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) repair in neonates is technically difficult because of the small working space and fragility of tissues. This study aimed to show the construct validity of the neonatal EA/TEF simulator by video-based assessment of endoscopic suturing skill. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A rapid-prototyped neonatal chest model with an artificial esophagus model similar to the actual neonatal esophagus was developed. Forty pediatric surgeons performed an endoscopic intracorporeal suturing task and a knot-tying task using the model, and a que

Three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic gait deviations in individuals with chronic anterior cruciate ligament deficient knee: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Altered joint motion that occurs in people with an anterior cruciate ligament deficient knee is proposed to play a role in the initiation of knee osteoarthritis, however, the exact mechanism is poorly understood. Although several studies have investigated gait deviations in individuals with chronic anterior cruciate ligament deficient knee in the frontal and transverse planes, no systematic review has summarized the kinematic and kinetic deviations in these two planes. METHODS: We searched five electronic databases from inception to 14th October 2013, with key words related to ant

Reporting quality of randomized controlled trial abstracts published in leading laser medicine journals: an assessment using the CONSORT for abstracts guidelines.

The objectives of this study were to assess the reporting quality of randomized controlled trial (RCT) abstracts published in leading laser medicine journals and investigate the association between potential predictors and reporting quality. The official online archives of four leading laser medicine journals were hand-searched to identify RCTs published in 2014 and 2015. A reporting quality assessment was carried out using the original 16-item CONsolidated Standards Of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) for Abstracts checklist. For each abstract, an overall CONSORT score (OCS) was calculated (score r

Teaching Parents How to Prevent Acquired Cranial Asymmetry in Infants.

Acquired cranial asymmetry is prevalent in infants today. This is largely attributed to the supine sleep position recommended for infant safety. The condition can become permanent, so prevention and early detection are important. A prevention project was initiated where guidelines for Swedish child health nurses were developed, tested in a pilot study, revised, and then incorporated into a short cranial asymmetry prevention program for nurses. The program included detailed information on what to teach parents of newborns. An intervention study was initiated where one group of nurses was taught

Clinical significance of increased cerebellar default-mode network connectivity in resting-state patients with drug-naive somatization disorder.

The cerebellum has been proven to be connected to the brain network, as in the default-mode network (DMN), among healthy subjects and patients with psychiatric disorders. However, whether or not abnormal cerebellar DMN connectivity exists and what its clinical significance is among drug-naive patients with somatization disorder (SD) at rest remain unclear.A total of 25 drug-naive patients with SD and 28 healthy controls were enrolled for a resting-state scan. The imaging data were analyzed using the seed-based functional connectivity (FC) method.Compared with the controls, patients with SD sho

Psychiatric symptoms in adolescents: FKBP5 genotype--early life adversity interaction effects.

Psychiatric disorders are multi-factorial and their symptoms overlap. Constitutional and environmental factors influence each other, and this contributes to risk and resilience in mental ill-health. We investigated functional genetic variation of stress responsiveness, assessed as FKBP5 genotype, in relation to early life adversity and mental health in two samples of adolescents. One population-based sample of 909 12-year-old adolescents was assessed using the Life Incidence of Traumatic Events scale and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. One sample of 398 17-year-old adolescents, e

The influence of caregiver depression on children in non-relative foster care versus kinship care placements.

Little is known about how the challenges faced by caregivers influence the variation in social, emotional, and behavioral (SEB) outcomes of youth placed in kinship versus non-relative foster care. This study examined SEB symptoms among youth in kinship and non-relative foster care settings, hypothesizing that changes in caregiver depression would modify children's change in behavior over time. Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) assessments of 199 children placed with kinship and non-relative foster care providers in a Mid-Atlantic city were conducted at time of placement and 6-12 months post-plac

Minimum information for reporting next generation sequence genotyping (MIRING): Guidelines for reporting HLA and KIR genotyping via next generation sequencing.

The development of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies for HLA and KIR genotyping is rapidly advancing knowledge of genetic variation of these highly polymorphic loci. NGS genotyping is poised to replace older methods for clinical use, but standard methods for reporting and exchanging these new, high quality genotype data are needed. The Immunogenomic NGS Consortium, a broad collaboration of histocompatibility and immunogenetics clinicians, researchers, instrument manufacturers and software developers, has developed the Minimum Information for Reporting Immunogenomic NGS Genotyping (

Social skills and psychopathic traits in maltreated adolescents.

Child maltreatment has frequently been associated with impaired social skills and antisocial features, but there are still controversies about the effect of each type of maltreatment on social behaviour. The aim of this study was to compare the social functioning and psychopathic traits of maltreated adolescents (MTA) with a control group (CG) and to investigate what types of maltreatments and social skills were associated with psychopathic traits in both groups. The types and intensity of maltreatment were evaluated through the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) in 107 adolescents, divided

An epidemiologic study of childhood sexual abuse and adult sleep disturbances.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is linked to negative consequences, including insomnia. Few studies have examined the enduring effects of CSA on adult insomnia. Given the relationship between sleep and poor health, a better understanding of these effects has clinical implications. We used a representative adult twin sample. Both sexes were assessed with a broad CSA variable, with a subset of females (n = 424) given additional items capturing escalating physical contact and abuse characteristics. A sum score of past-month insomnia symptoms was calculated from the Symptom Checklist-90 (shortened ve

Prevalence and Correlates of Psychological Symptoms in Chinese Doctors as Measured with the SCL-90-R: A Meta-Analysis.

Poor mental health in doctors appears to be a global phenomenon, but there are limited data on changes in doctors' psychological symptoms over time in mainland China. Through a detailed meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies, our aim was to examine the prevalence of psychological symptoms in Chinese physicians as measured with the Symptom Checklist 90-R (SCL-90-R) and to explore the factors associated with doctors' mental health. A comprehensive search was performed in major English and Chinese databases. Thirty studies involving a total of 6,099 subjects were included in the meta-analysis.
