Adapting a school readiness intervention for children with sickle cell disease: an intervention mapping for adaptation approach.

BACKGROUND: Preschool children with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at high risk for early and progressive neurocognitive deficits that negatively affect academic outcomes. Preschoolers with SCD are more likely to display deficits in school readiness skills such as early literacy, numeracy, and self-regulation. Previous behavioral interventions for children with SCD have displayed highly variable feasibility and adherence. The goal of this study was to formally adapt an evidence-based school readiness intervention for children with SCD. METHODS: The Intervention Mapping for Adaptation (IM Adapt

Prevalence and Determinants of Vitamin A Supplementation Among Somali Children (6-59 Months): A Cross-Sectional Study Using Insights From the SDHS 2020.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a pressing public health issue for young children in low- and middle-income countries like Somalia, significantly increasing risks of morbidity, mortality, and impaired development. High-dose Vitamin A supplementation (VAS) is a crucial preventative intervention, yet data on its coverage in Somalia's complex humanitarian context are scarce. This study aims to assess the prevalence of VAS and identify its sociodemographic determinants among Somali children aged 6-59 months. METHODS: This study utilized a quantitative, cross-sectional design, a

Preliminary study of the social withdrawal (hikikomori) spectrum in French adolescents: focusing on the differences in pathology and related factors compared with Japanese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Social withdrawal (hikikomori) has become an internationally recognized phenomenon, but its pathology and related factors are not yet fully known. We previously conducted a statistical case-control study on adolescent patients with hikikomori in Japan, which revealed the non-specificity of pathology in patients with hikikomori. Further, environmental factors, such as the lack of communication between parents and Internet overuse, were found to be significant predictors of hikikomori severity. Here, we aimed to conduct a similar preliminary case-control study in France and to compar

Infant feeding in Mali, West Africa: variations in belief and practice.

Research conducted in Mali during 1982 and 1983 reveals a wide range of variation in both the growth and development of infants and infant feeding practices. Overall, growth patterns of the Malian children (N = 136) are similar to those reported for children in other West African urban or rural poor populations. However, the use of the averages of growth measures disguises the fact that some children are severely malnourished, while others are growing at or above the 50th percentile of NCHS standards. Socio-economic status, as an indicator of the family's financial ability to provide food and

Correlation between time pressure, emotional exhaustion, and children's behavioral problems among primary and secondary school homeroom teachers.

This study explored the relationship between homeroom teachers' time pressure, emotional exhaustion, and students' behavioral problems, as well as the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying these associations. A total of 86 primary and secondary homeroom teachers and 1,287 students were recruited and surveyed via standardized scales. Results showed that teachers experienced moderate time pressure, with administrative work occupying teaching time as the most prominent issue; secondary school teachers reported higher time pressure than primary school teachers. Nearly half of the teachers

Indirect But Lasting: Linking Indirect Aggression Use Over Childhood to Future Adjustment While Considering Conduct Problems.

Frequent and recurrent indirect aggressive (IA) behaviors (e.g., spreading false rumors, ignoring) are associated with later detrimental consequences. This high IA use appears to be more frequent among children with conduct problems, making it difficult to determine whether the negative outcomes of IA are related to other conduct problems or whether IA makes a distinct contribution. Therefore, the present study aims to determine whether a high trajectory of IA use from around 8 years of age to around 13 years of age is associated with negative outcomes at around 17 years of age controlling for

Cross-cultural conceptions of third-party intervention across childhood.

Third-party intervention is a cornerstone of cooperative societies, yet we know little about how children develop an understanding of this social behavior. The present work generates a cross-cultural and developmental picture of how 6-, 9-, and 12-year-olds (N = 447) across four societies (India, Germany, Uganda, and the United States) reason about third-party intervention. To do so, we measured children's obligation judgments and unstructured descriptions of third-party intervention. Although some cultural differences emerged, 6-year-olds largely considered bystanders as obligated to respond

Relationships between feeding problems, eating behaviours and parental feeding practices in children with Down syndrome: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Research investigating feeding problems in children with Down syndrome is scarce. This study investigated feeding problems, eating behaviours and parental feeding practices in children with Down syndrome (n = 40), and typically developing (TD) children of the same age and sex (n = 40). METHOD: Parents of children aged 6-months to 5-years in the UK completed questionnaires assessing their child's feeding problems and eating behaviours and parental feeding practices. RESULTS: For children with Down syndrome, feeding problems were: significantly greater than for TD children; negativ

Social Media Use Subgroups Differentially Predict Psychosocial Well-Being During Early Adolescence.

Despite the salience of the social media context to psychosocial development, little is known about social media use patterns and how they relate to psychological and social functioning over time during early adolescence. This longitudinal study, therefore, identified subgroups of early adolescents based on their social media use and examined whether these subgroups predicted psychosocial functioning. Adolescents (N = 1205; 11-14 years; 51% female; 51% white) completed surveys at baseline and a six-month follow-up. There were three social media use subgroups at baseline: high overall social me

Understanding the Participation in Home, School, and Community Activities Reported by Children with Disabilities and Their Parents: A Pilot Study.

Participation has significant impact on children's health and well-being. Knowledge is limited on how children with disabilities perceive their participation and whether their perceptions differ from their parents. This pilot study aimed to explore whether self-reported frequency of participation and prioritized activities differ between children with disabilities and their parents. Thirty children with disabilities eligible for special education in elementary school and their parents were included. Each of them were interviewed with the Chinese version of Picture My Participation (PMP), separ

The influences of neighborhood disorder on early childhood externalizing problems: The roles of parental stress and child physical maltreatment.

AIMS: The current study examined both the direct and indirect influences of neighborhood disorder on early childhood externalizing problems among 3,036 three-year-old children. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data used in this study were drawn from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3,036). The results of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) indicated that living in disordered neighborhoods is directly associated with higher levels of early childhood externalizing problems. Moreover, parental stress and physical maltreatment significantly mediated the relationship between neighborhood dis

Task-avoidant behaviour and dyslexia: A follow-up from Grade 2 to age 20.

Task-avoidant behaviour is correlated with reading skills and may have an impact on achieving educational and occupation goals in the long run. Longitudinal studies on task avoidance and its links to reading difficulties are non-existent, however. The present study examines changes and stability of task-avoidant behaviour from childhood (Grade 2), through adolescence (Grades 7 and 9), to early adulthood (age 20) among participants identified with (n = 46) and without dyslexia (n = 151) at Grade 2, with gender effects also examined. Results showed significant changes in task avoidance from Grad

Maternal Psychosocial Maladjustment and Child Internalizing Symptoms: Investigating the Modulating Role of Maternal Sensitivity.

In light of evidence suggesting that maternal adaptation may impact early child emotional development, this study investigated the interactive effects of maternal psychosocial maladjustment and maternal sensitivity on child internalizing symptoms, with the aim of investigating the potentially protective function of maternal sensitivity. Families (N = 71 to 106 across measures, with gender spread almost evenly: number of boys = 31 to 51 across measures) took part in four assessments between child ages 1 and 3 years. Mothers completed measures of parental stress, psychological distress, and mari

Further evaluation of response interruption and redirection as treatment for stereotypy.

The effects of 2 forms of response interruption and redirection (RIRD)-motor RIRD and vocal RIRD-were examined with 4 boys with autism to evaluate further the effects of this intervention and its potential underlying mechanisms. In Experiment 1, the effects of motor RIRD and vocal RIRD on vocal stereotypy and appropriate vocalizations were compared for 2 participants. In Experiment 2, the effects of both RIRD procedures on both vocal and motor stereotypy and appropriate vocalizations were compared with 2 additional participants. Functional assessment and behavioural intervention for eating difficulties in children with autism: a study conducted in the natural environment using parents and ABA tutors as therapists.

Two functional assessments (interview and direct observation) were used with three children with autism to identify the functions maintaining mealtime behaviour including acceptance, mouth clean, refusal, and other disruptive behaviours such as crying and pushing the spoon. Based on results of the functional assessments it was hypothesized that appropriate and disruptive mealtime behaviour was maintained by different contingencies. A non-concurrent multiple baseline design across participants was utilized to validate the effectiveness of the intervention. Intervention for all participants incl
