Childhood predictors of violent behavior.

In this study, prospective childhood data from birth to 7 years of age were used to determine predictors of subsequent violent behavior. The childhood predictors found for the girls accounted for more variance in the reported later violent offenses: 24.9% compared to 3.8% for the boys. This large difference may be due partly to the fact that violent behavior is more unusual among girls; thus, those girls who are violent are more readily differentiated from the others. The only two early childhood variables that were found to predict for both genders were: (a) less normal behavior and (b) prese

Reading disabilities with and without behaviour problems at 7-8 years: prediction from longitudinal data from infancy to 6 years.

Seven-year-old children with reading disabilities (RD-only), behaviour problems (BP-only), both conditions (RD-BP) and neither condition (Comparison) were compared on indices including temperament and behaviour, gathered in five periods between infancy and 6 years of age. The RD-BP group differed clearly from the RD-only group from infancy onwards. This comorbid group was similar to the BP-only group, while the RD-only group was similar to the Comparison group, until school age. The gender composition of the two RD groups differed, and the RD-BP boys showed the most problematic characteristics

Temperamental origins of child and adolescent behavior problems: from age three to age fifteen.

We assessed relations between early temperament and behavior problems across 12 years in an unselected sample of over 800 children. Temperament measures were drawn from behavior ratings made by examiners who observed children at ages 3, 5, 7, and 9. Factor analyses revealed 3 dimensions at each age: Lack of Control, Approach, and Sluggishness. Temperament dimensions at ages 3 and 5 were correlated in theoretically coherent ways with behavior problems that were independently evaluated by parents and teachers at ages 9 and 11, and by parents at ages 13 and 15. Lack of Control was more strongly a

Premorbid emotional and behavioural adjustment in children with mild head injuries.

This study investigated the hypothesis that children sustaining a mild closed head injury have a higher prevalence of premorbid behavioural problems than children in the general community. The prevalence of emotional and behavioural problems among children with a mild closed head injury was compared with the prevalence of problems in children with a severe closed head injury, children in the general community, and children referred to a psychiatric outpatient clinic. The results showed that the children with a mild head injury did not have significantly more premorbid emotional and behavioural

Effect of very low birth weight and subnormal head size on cognitive abilities at school age.

BACKGROUND: We tested the hypothesis that very-low-birth-weight (less than 1.5 kg) infants with perinatal growth failure whose head size is not normal by eight months of age (corrected for prematurity) have significantly poorer growth and neurocognitive abilities at school age than very-low-birth-weight children with a normal head size at eight months. We also hypothesized that these differences would persist even after control for major neurologic impairment and perinatal and sociodemographic risk factors. METHODS: We have followed a cohort of very-low-birth-weight children since their birth

Intelligence, behavior, and dysmorphogenesis in the fetal alcohol syndrome: a report on 20 patients.

In a sample of 20 patients with the fetal alcohol syndrome, ages 9 months to 21 years, the average IQ was 65, with a range of 16 to 105; 60% of the patients had IQ's more than two standard deviations below the mean. The sample included patients who ranged in severity of dysmorphogenesis from mild to severe. The severity of the dysmorphic features was related to degree of mental deficiency; children with the most severe manifestations of FAS had an average IQ of 55, whereas children with lesser manifestations had an average IQ of 82. All children were growth deficient for height and/or head cir

Childhood autism. A review of the clinical and experimental literature.

This review of the literature on childhood autism discusses the clinical characteristics, differential diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of the autistic behavioral syndrome from a developmental perspective. It includes a discussion of the influence of prenatal and perinatal antecedents, genetic and socio-familial factors, and epidemiologic considerations. Neurologic, electro-encephalographic and experimental neurophysiologic, metabolic, biochemical and hematologic investigations are reviewed. Special emphasis has been given to the changing clinical manifestations which accompany maturation an

Examining the relationship between higher educational attainment, trauma symptoms, and internalizing behaviors in child sexual abuse survivors.

The trauma symptoms of child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors don't end with the abuse, or even with the advent of adulthood. Instead, these symptoms can persist into all the realms of a survivor's life, including education, which sets the foundation for career advancement. This retrospective study of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse (n=260) examined the relationships between trauma symptoms, dissociation, dissociative amnesia, anxiety, depression, sleep problems and higher education attainment. The purpose of this study was to determine if these factors are associated with higher educati

Pharmacologic treatments for the behavioral symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorders across the lifespan.

This review outlines pharmacologic treatments for the behavioral symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in children, adolescents, and adults. Symptom domains include repetitive and stereotyped behaviors, irritability and aggression, hyperactivity and inattention, and social impairment. Medications covered include serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs), mirtazapine, antipsychotics, psychostimulants, atomoxetine, α-2 agonists, D-cycloserine, and memantine. Overall, SRIs are less efficacious and more poorly tolerated in children with ASDs than in adults. Antipsychotics are the mo

Dialectical behavior therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder related to childhood sexual abuse: a pilot study of an intensive residential treatment program.

Dialectical behavior therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (DBT-PTSD) is tailored for adults with PTSD from childhood sexual abuse (CSA). It uses principles from DBT and trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral approaches. To evaluate acceptance and safety, the authors treated 29 women with chronic CSA-related PTSD plus at least one other comorbid diagnosis. The Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS), Symptom Checklist 90-Revised, Beck Depression Inventory, and State Trait Anxiety Inventory were administered prior to, at the end of, and 6 weeks after 3 months of intensive residential treatment. Mothers' protection of their children after discovering they have been sexually abused: an information-processing perspective.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to understand why some non-offending mothers did not protect their children consistently after they knew they were sexually abused. METHODS: The sample included 85 mothers who were involved with child protective services: 48 mothers who protected their children consistently were compared to 37 mothers who did not. RESULTS: Several variables explained 47% of the variance in the multivariate analysis. If the mother did not ask the abuser whether the abuse occurred, attributed responsibility to the abuser, believed consistently that the abuse occurred, a

[Life leaves its marks].

BACKGROUND: The article highlights how environmental factors early in life, in combination with genetic vulnerability, can influence development and partly explain variations in mental health. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A selection of key articles identified on Medline. RESULT: The plasticity of a child's brain makes it particularly susceptible to environmental factors. This provides a significant potential for learning and adaptation, but also causes vulnerability with respect to, for instance, mental illness. There are no studies showing that a specific trauma or strain causes a specific psychol

The role of psychopathology in the parenting of drug-dependent women.

This paper explores the parenting of drug-dependent women and the contributions of comorbid psychopathology to their parenting. A sample of 32 children whose mothers were dependent on opioid drugs during pregnancy and 37 children whose mothers were not drug users were followed from birth to middle childhood. Multivariate regression analyses were conducted contrasting whether maternal substance abuse or psychopathology was more closely linked to parenting behaviors and continuity in parenting over time. Maternal drug dependence was related to whether mothers were able to remain primary caregive

Novel features in the evolution of adenylosuccinate lyase deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Adenylosuccinate lyase (ADSL) deficiency is an autosomal recessive disorder of the purine synthesis which results in accumulation of succinylpurines (succinyladenosine (S-Ado) and succinylamino-imidazole carboxamide riboside (SAICAr)) in body fluids. Patients present developmental delay, often accompanied by epilepsy and autistic spectrum disorders. OBJECTIVES: To describe atypical neurological features in the evolution of three novel unrelated cases of ADSL deficiency. PATIENTS: A 9-year-old boy with severe cognitive impairment and autistic behaviour received d-ribose therapy fo

Learning disabilities and school problems in a regional cohort of extremely low birth weight (less than 1000 G) children: a comparison with term controls.

We compared the prevalence of learning disabilities at age 8 years in a subgroup of 68 of 129 (53%) regional cohort of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) children who were considered "normal" neurologically and intellectually (IQ greater than or equal to 85) with that of 114 term group matched controls (C). Both groups were tested with a battery of psychoeducational measures, and parents and teachers completed questionnaires on the school performance of the children. ELBW children were comparable with C on measures of intelligence (ELBW 101 +/- 8, C 104 +/- 11), language, and academic achieveme

Child and adolescent traumatic brain injury: correlates of disruptive behaviour disorders.

A record review focused on children and adolescents, with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI), who were consecutively admitted to a brain injury clinic in which all new patients are psychiatrically evaluated. Correlates of post-injury oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD) and post-injury attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AHD) were investigated. Subjects who developed ODD/CD following TBI, when compared to subjects without a lifetime history of the disorder, had significantly more impaired family functioning, showed a trend toward a greater family history of alco
