The Role of Iconicity and Givenness in the Acquisition of Mandarin Before- and After-Sentences.

The acquisition of temporal clauses involves complex relationships between linguistic structure and cognitive development. This study examines the roles of iconicity and information structure (givenness) in Mandarin-speaking children's comprehension of before- and after-sentences. Using a forced-choice picture-selection task and an act-out task, we tested 45 children aged 3-5 years and 15 adults. The results revealed a robust advantage for iconic structure across both experiments. Children consistently showed better comprehension of iconic after-sentences than non-iconic before-sentences, a pa

Beyond the Approximate Number System: Evidence for spatialization of the Object Tracking System at birth.

Human numerical cognition relies on two core systems: the Approximate Number System (ANS), supporting approximate magnitude estimation, and the Object Tracking System (OTS), enabling precise individuation of up to 3 or 4 items. This study tested 32 healthy, full-term newborns (0-3 days old; 18 females) recruited from a maternity ward serving a socioeconomically and ethnically diverse population. Newborns familiarized with 2 elements (OTS range) preferred 1 element on the left, whereas those familiarized with 4 elements (ANS range) preferred 12 elements on the right. This pattern (η²p = 0.462)

Does communication-based belief attribution in 18-month-olds reflect an altercentric bias?

To successfully navigate the social world, young children may need to understand how others form beliefs and how these beliefs guide their behavior. While most studies targeted infants' tracking of others' beliefs based on visual access, it is unclear whether they can track communication-based beliefs. Here, we investigate 18-month-olds' understanding of others' beliefs induced via communication (Experiment 1: N = 34; Experiment 2 - replication: N = 35) through measuring their spontaneous pointing in a false-belief scenario. Infants' pointing was influenced by an agent's false-belief, revealin

Cross-Cultural Variation in the Noun Bias in Early Vocabulary Development: A Systematic Review.

Children's early vocabularies have been observed to be predominated by nouns, particularly concrete and animate nouns. This phenomenon, known as the "noun bias," is argued to reflect a universal conceptual advantage for concrete objects in early word learning, because such referents are perceived as bounded, individualized concepts that are ready to be mapped onto linguistic labels. The noun bias has been observed across a wide range of languages using multiple methodological approaches, establishing it as a robust feature of early lexical development. However, the magnitude and consistency of

The association between transportation noise exposure and mental health outcomes in children and adolescents in High Income Countries: A systematic umbrella review.

Transportation noise affects millions of people globally. This umbrella review assesses the quality of the evidence across existing systematic reviews on the association between environmental transportation noise (from roads, railways and aircraft) and child and adolescent mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, hyperactivity/inattention, behavioural problems, and emotional symptoms). It also identifies inequality in associations for factors such as deprivation and ethnicity. Seven databases were searched from January 2015 up to January 2025. Studies were screened for inclusion independen

Statistics in Motion: Does the Infant Motor System Predict Actions Based on Their Transitional Probability?

Motor theories of action prediction propose that our neural motor system combines prior knowledge about action outcomes with current sensory input to predict other people's behavior. This knowledge can be acquired through observational experience, more specifically statistical learning. Recently, it has been shown that infants can detect in a stream of actions two actions that follow each other deterministically and that their motor system uses this knowledge to predict upcoming actions. However, real-life actions are more complex: actions rarely follow one another with 100% probability, certa

Population Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic Modeling to Determine Ontogeny: A Quantitative Clinical Pharmacology Example in Pediatric Rare Disease.

Pediatric physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modelling plays an increasing role in selecting doses in children and addressing clinical pharmacology questions. Ethical concerns often limit clinical pharmacology studies that have no direct therapeutic benefit in children, highlighting the value of PBPK model predictions. However, regulatory acceptance of pediatric PBPK models remains limited because of uncertainties in system-specific information and inadequate model qualification. Ambiguous ontogeny data of drug metabolizing enzymes (DME) and transporters are recognized as significant

The high-altitude baby: Neonatal development and survival in hypoxic environments.

High altitude exposes the human fetus and newborn to chronic hypobaric hypoxia, markedly reducing oxygen availability during critical windows of development. While adults tolerate moderate hypoxia through well-described acclimatization mechanisms, neonates (particularly those born preterm) exhibit substantially greater vulnerability. Despite more than one million infants being born annually at high or very high altitude, neonatal care practices are still largely derived from sea-level evidence, often neglecting altitude-specific physiology. This review synthesizes current evidence on the effec

Paediatric Drug Optimization for Sickle Cell Disease: priorities for research and development in children.

Sickle cell disease remains a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. In September, 2025, WHO convened the Paediatric Drug Optimization for Sickle Cell Disease process to review approved therapies, pipeline candidates, and potentially curative approaches, and define priorities for children and adolescents. Hydroxyurea (hydroxycarbamide) was confirmed as the leading near-term priority, with age-appropriate soluble or dispersible formulations identified as essential to improve equitable paediatric access; preferred and minimum characteristics were de

Beyond motor learning: Insights from infant magnetic resonance imaging on the critical role of the cerebellum in behavioral development.

Although the cerebellum is now recognized for its crucial role in non-motor functions such as language, perceptual processes, social communication, and executive function in adults, it is often overlooked in studies of non-motor behavioral development in infancy. Recent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) research increasingly shows the cerebellum is key to understanding the emergence of complex human behaviors and neurodevelopmental conditions. This review summarizes studies from diverse MRI modalities that link early cerebellar development from birth to age two with emerging non-motor behaviors

The role of electric cooking in providing sustainable school meals in low-income and lower-middle-income countries.

Approximately 418 million children are beneficiaries of school meal programmes globally. In general, supportive infrastructure is necessary for the successful delivery of school meals, but in many low-income and lower-middle-income countries (LLMICs), schools have poor access to essential facilities such as kitchens, electricity, and clean water. Moreover, schools in LLMICs often rely on charcoal or firewood for cooking with consequent negative health, social, economic, and environmental impacts that disproportionally affect women and children. The increasing availability of electricity and la

Rethinking the study of newborn sociality: Challenges and opportunities.

Growing empirical evidence from the past quarter century reveals surprising sociality in newborns-infants in the first 28 postnatal days-including their ability to elicit and sustain contingent interactions with mutual gaze, social smiling, and sensitively timed, speech-like vocalizations. Newborns seem to have communicative expectations and behave as if they predict others' goal-directed actions. Despite these discoveries, I review key barriers to progress in newborn developmental science. First, newborn social behavior research has almost exclusively focused on "average" development-based pr

Defining Developmental Language Disorder and Dyslexia in Schools: A Mixed-Methods Analysis.

PURPOSE: Interprofessional practice requires regular communication between professionals from different disciplines using shared terminology. Within schools, many professionals are tasked with supporting children with language disorders, namely, developmental language disorder (DLD) and/or dyslexia. Limited information exists as to (a) how school-based professionals' definitions of DLD and dyslexia align with research definitions, (b) how different school-based professionals define language disorders, (c) how school-based professionals' definitions of DLD and dyslexia align across professional

[Effect and mechanism of obstructive sleep apnea on maxillofacial development in children].

In recent years, a large number of studies have demonstrated that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can lead to the abnormal development of maxillofacial region in pediatric patients, which may result in a 'vicious circle' aggravating OSA, therefore adversely affecting quality of life. Understanding the effect and mechanism of OSA on children's maxillofacial development is helpful to better prevent and treat OSA and maxillofacial dysplasia in children.

The three-dimensionality of the "gummy smile".

The "gummy smile" is a complex developmental issue that requires a three-dimensional approach to diagnosis and treatment. This article explores the multifaceted nature of the gummy smile, tracing its origins to early childhood growth patterns and breathing dysfunctions. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the interplay between skeletal development, soft tissue function, and breathing modalities in the formation of craniofacial structures. The article discusses how early mouth breathing and tongue dysfunction can lead to maladaptive skeletal growth, resulting in vertical maxillary exc

In Tandem Intragenic Duplication of Doublesex and Mab-3-Related Transcription Factor 1 (DMRT1) in an SRY-Negative Boy with a 46,XX Disorder of Sex Development.

Disorders of sexual development (DSDs) encompass a group of congenital conditions associated with atypical development of internal and external genital structures. Among those with DSDs are 46,XX males, whose condition mainly arises due to the translocation of SRY onto an X chromosome or an autosome. In the few SRY-negative 46,XX males, overexpression of other pro-testis genes or failure of pro-ovarian/anti-testis genes may be involved, even if a non-negligible number of cases remain unexplained. A three-year-old boy with an SRY-negative 46,XX karyotype showed a normal male phenotype and norma
