Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with severe symptoms and associated comorbidities. It is caused by the inactivity or lack of the UBE3a gene. Symptoms of the syndrome include intellectual disability and developmental delay. The current study investigated sleep disturbances (SD) in children and adolescents with AS, associations between SD and possible predictors of SD. Variables examined included age, gender, newborn and infancy history, challenging behavior, type of therapy received, genetic type of AS, and seizures. The sample included data from 109 participants with a

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a neurogenetic disorder that affects multiple organ systems, including the heart, kidneys, eyes, skin, and central nervous system. The neurologic manifestations have the highest morbidity and mortality, in particular in children. Clinically, patients with TSC often present with new-onset seizures within the first year of life. TSC-associated epilepsy is often difficult to treat and refractory to multiple antiseizure medications. Refractory TSC-associated epilepsy is associated with increased risk of neurodevelopmental comorbidities, including developmental d

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common pediatric motor disability with multiple symptoms and etiologies. CP is exhibited through sensorimotor delays, impaired posture resulting in limited activities and participation. Our recently concluded, single arm, unblinded, pilot study (NCT04882592) explored whether an intervention combining non-invasive spinal neuromodulation during an activity-based neurorehabilitation therapy (ABNT) can improve voluntary sensory-motor function captured via the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-88) scores (primary outcome). Sixteen children diagnosed with CP with Gro

Congenital nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) deficiency disorders are associated with pathogenic variants in the genes NADSYN1, HAAO, and KYNU. These disorders overlap with the anomalies present in vertebral, anal, cardiac, tracheoesophageal, radial and renal, and limb anomalies (VATER/VACTERL) association and often result in premature death. Children who survive typically have developmental delays or intellectual disability. Here, we describe two patients with compound heterozygous variants in NADSYN1 who presented with cardiac and vertebral defects overlapping with the VATER/VACTERL as

Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE) constitute an expanding group of severely disabling and, most frequently, drug-resistant disorders starting in the first year of life. Among them, there is DEE43, caused by dominant mutations in the GABRB3 gene. We present first neuropathological findings in a novel, molecularly confirmed case with the fatal course. The neuropathological analysis revealed co-existing developmental anomalies and retardation of myelination resulting from disturbed early brain growth as well as lesions caused by epileptic hypoxic-ischemic episodes. Developmental

In 2018, one in every 59 children was diagnosed in the United States with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a developmental disability, which is a biologically based neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a child's social interaction and communication skills. ASD includes repetitive patterns and restrictive behaviors, which could last a lifetime. Limited awareness of disease condition, less effective coping strategies, and inadequate guidance lead to increased stress levels among parents of children with ASD. Parents experience peaks and troughs of social, emotional, and financial chall

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a specific and persistent disability affecting the acquisition of written language. Prevalence is estimated to be between 5% and 17% of school-aged children; it therefore represents a major public health issue. Neurological in origin, its causes are unknown, although there is a clear genetic component. Diagnosis rests upon the use of standardized tests and tools to assess reading and spelling, as well as phonological skills. The importance of early diagnosis cannot be overemphasized and much current research is focusing on screening and prediction, particularly t

Pediatric multiple sclerosis has been increasingly recognized in the past 10 to 15 years; 3% to 5% of all multiple sclerosis patients experience their first attack in childhood. Childhood multiple sclerosis has a relapsing-remitting disease course. The first attack, or "acquired demyelinating syndrome," consists of optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, and monofocal or polyfocal neurological deficits. The diagnosis of multiple sclerosis necessitates the clinical or magnetic resonance imaging confirmation of dissemination in space and time and exclusion of o

We reviewed the clinical and electrophysiologic features of 293 children with Guillain-Barré syndrome admitted to the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between 2000 and 2009. The male/female ratio was 2.02, and the syndrome occurred most frequently in those between 1 and 4 years of age. There was no seasonal variation. A total of 46.1% patients had experienced an infection 1 to 4 weeks before the onset of the syndrome. The main subtype was acute motor axonal neuropathy (50.0%), with acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (38.1%) ranked as second in frequency.

Septic arthritis in children remains a serious disease with the potential for significant systemic and musculoskeletal morbidity. Staphlococcus aureus is the most common cause of bone and joint infections in all age groups. Microbial invasion of the synovial space occurs typically results from hematogenous seeding. Diagnosis in neonates and young infants can be difficult since the clinical signs are much less specific in these age groups. Early diagnosis by needle aspiration of the affected joint and prompt initiation of appropriate antimicrobial therapy in conjunction with drainage of the aff

In this study, a reading-level-match design was used to test the hypothesis that children with reading disability (RD) are characterized by poor phonological skills, and that a developmental lag, as opposed to a specific deficit, will be found in transparent orthographies. Spanish has a transparent orthography and thus children with RD should not show severe difficulties in the use of the phonological route, as in the English language. A sample of 118 participants was selected and organized into three different groups: 40 with RD, 38 normal readers matched in age with the former, and 40 younge

UNLABELLED: Fifty-four patients with dancing eye syndrome (DES), presenting over a 25-year period, were reviewed retrospectively. One third of them were on active follow up at the time of the study. Malignancy was uncommon, diagnosed in only 4 patients, neuroblastoma in 3 cases and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in 1. An intercurrent illness preceded onset of DES in 51% of the children and was of equivocal significance. There was no clear temporal relationship to immunization. The acute phase of the illness was severe and caused total immobilization in 88% of patients. A favourable initia

There is no consensus opinion on whether or not cognitive impairments are found in the Silver-Russell syndrome. An investigation of a substantial sample was undertaken, using standardised assessments, in 20 boys and five girls aged 6.0 years to 11.8 years. Mean (SD) birth weights were -2.65 (0.95) SD scores, corrected for gestation. At evaluation the children had a mean (SD) age of 8.8 (1.8) years and a mean height of -2.26 (1.5) SD scores. Tests of cognitive abilities included assessments of general intelligence, reading and arithmetic attainments, and a cognitive processing task. Most had so

The rectosphincteric responses of 22 spina bifida (SB) children, aged 3.0 to 11.0 years, with frequent neurogenic faecal incontinence were investigated by clinical and anomanometric techniques and a bowel habilitation programme based on the physiological rationale of timed regular and complete evacuations, regulation of bowel habit and faecal consistency by diet and biofeedback conditioning of rectosphincteric responses. Eighteen patients had perianal anaesthesia, flail anus and absent anorectal reflex, but some degree of (reduced) rectal sensation. Four had reduced perianal sensation and norm
