PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surgical success of sulcus fixation of Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGIs) in special reference to corneal damage.

PURPOSE: To describe our clinical experience with ciliary sulcus-implanted Baerveldt glaucoma tube shunts entirely concealed behind the iris in undilated pseudophakic eyes (concealed tubes, CT group), compared with similarly implanted tubes whose openings remain fully exposed in the undilated pupillary area (nonconcealed tubes, NCT group).

BACKGROUND: Diffuse and cystic epithelial downgrowth occur rarely, but they represent a mostly preventable potential cause of blindness as sequels to trauma and surgery. The aim of this study is to report on the etiology and course of disease in patients with histologically verified epithelial downgrowth.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1986 until 2000 the ophthalmopathological laboratory of the University Eye Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf received 13 (4 external) referrals. Ten patients with cystic of diffuse intraocular epithelial downgrowth were treated and 9 eyes were operated on in the Hospital.

We report for the first time that cultured nonpigmented human ciliary epithelial (NPE) cell layers transport fluid. Cells were grown to confluence on permeable membrane inserts, and fluid transport across the resulting cell layers was determined by volume clamp at 37 degrees C. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cyclodialysis after ocular trauma or surgery may lead to hypotony and visual loss. A new surgical approach for the treatment of cyclodialysis is reported.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In three patients with long-standing cyclodialysis and hypotony, a pars plana vitrectomy with gas tamponade and transscleral cryotherapy to the region of the cleft was performed.
RESULTS: In all patients intraocular pressure increased to normal or near normal, choroidal detachment and retinal and disc edema resolved, and visual acuity increased.

We compared the effects of L-type voltage-dependent Ca2+ and ATP-sensitive K+ channels modulators on contractility in isolated bovine ciliary muscle with those in rabbit aortae. PURPOSE: We studied an unusual case of posterior scleritis in a patient with sarcoidosis.
METHOD: The medical record was reviewed for clinical manifestation, course, and tests performed, including laboratory evaluations, fluorescein angiography, and ultrasonography.
RESULTS: The patient had posterior scleritis and unilateral angle-closure glaucoma caused by an annular ciliochoroidal detachment. Sarcoidosis was confirmed by biopsy of an enlarged parotid gland.

PURPOSE: To determine the stoichiometry of Na+,K+,Cl- cotransport in fetal human nonpigmented ciliary epithelial cells and the effect of forskolin, an adenylyl cyclase activator, on Na+,K+,Cl- cotransport.
METHODS: 86Rb+ as a marker for K+ was used to study ouabain-insensitive, bumetanide-sensitive 86Rb+ uptake in cultured human nonpigmented epithelial (NPE) monolayers.
RESULTS: The dependence of ouabain-insensitive, bumetanide-sensitive 86Rb+ uptake upon Na+, K+, and Cl- concentrations was determined. Maximal uptake was observed at about 12 mM, 20 mM, and 120 mM of these ions, respectively.
