Beliefs related to the use of oral contraceptives by African American women, ages 18-35.

This study looked at modal, salient beliefs regarding intention to use and use of oral contraceptives (OC) in a group of African American women aged 18-35 in a midwest urban community. Data were collected in face-to-face audio taped interviews using a format devised by Ajzen and Fishbein. Questions related to the identified behavior of deliberate action to avoid unwanted pregnancy by instituting the use of a contraceptive method. Twenty-five women consented to participate. Of these, 20 women (80%) reported using oral contraceptives as their primary birth control method. The study reports on wo

Reproducibility of oral contraceptive histories and validity of hormone composition reported in a cohort of US women.

Histories of oral contraceptive (OC) use were reported by 116,686 women aged 25 to 42 years in the Nurses' Health Study II on a self-administered questionnaire accompanied by a color photo booklet of all OC preparations ever marketed in the US. To evaluate the quality of this information, we compared the responses of a randomly selected sample of 215 participants with their data from a subsequent, detailed telephone interview using a structured life events calendar. Agreement for a history of ever having used OC was high between the two methods (exact agreement 99%). Reported durations of use

The effect of a desogestrel-containing oral contraceptive on glucose tolerance and leptin concentrations in hyperandrogenic women.

Ovarian hyperandrogenism can be associated with insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, glucose intolerance, and obesity. High levels of the lipostatic hormone, leptin, have also been reported in this condition. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of an oral contraceptive (OC) of low androgenicity containing desogestrel on glucose tolerance in hyperandrogenic women and the impact of changes in androgenic/estrogenic status on leptin concentrations. Sixteen nondiabetic hyperandrogenic women, aged 29 +/- 1 yr with a body mass index (BMI) of 36.8 +/- 1.8 kg/m2, underwent an or

Effect of topiramate on the pharmacokinetics of an oral contraceptive containing norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol in patients with epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Because enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) can affect pharmacokinetics of oral contraceptives and thereby cause contraceptive failure, the potential effect of topiramate, a new AED, on the pharmacokinetics of the combination oral contraceptive norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol was evaluated. METHODS: Twelve women receiving stable valproic acid (VPA) monotherapy for epilepsy received a combination norethindrone 1.0 mg/ethinyl estradiol 35-microg tablet daily for 21 days followed by seven daily doses of inert tablets for four 28-day cycles. After a baseline cycle (cycle 1), topir

Feasibility of a telephone follow-up on use of emergency contraceptive pills in a college health center.

The authors examined the feasibility and effectiveness of a telephone follow-up procedure on use of emergency contraceptive pills (ECP) at a college health center. They made 264 telephone calls to the 97 women who had received ECPs during one 16-week academic semester and were successful in reaching 65 (67%) of the women, who responded with information about their experiences with ECPs. The women demonstrated a high rate of adherence to the medical regimen and reported very few side effects from ECPs; a majority said that ECPs did not affect their ability to carry out daily activities. Leuprolide and estrogen versus oral contraceptive pills for the treatment of hirsutism: a prospective randomized study.

The administration of long-acting GnRH analogs (GnRH-a) results in gonadotropin and androgen suppression in hyperandrogenic women. Nonetheless, no randomized studies are available comparing GnRH-a with currently used treatments for hirsutism. We have hypothesized that the greater degrees of androgen suppression achieved with GnRH-a therapy could result in a more rapid improvement in hirsutism compared to oral contraceptive (OCP) administration. To test this hypothesis, we studied 17 hirsute women before and during 6 months of randomized treatment with 1) leuprolide depot (3.75 mg/month) plus c

Combined use of condoms with other contraceptive methods among inner-city Baltimore women.

Data from a street survey conducted among 717 women aged 17-35 in two inner-city Baltimore communities in 1991-1992 indicate that 17% of the entire sample, 38% of women using the pill and 11% of users of methods other than the pill used a condom in addition to another method the last time they had intercourse. Although adolescents reported the highest rate of combined condom and pill use (22% of 17-19-year-olds), condom use was significantly associated with pill use among adult women (odds ratio of 1.57) but not among adolescents (odds ratio of 1.03). Condom use was negatively associated with

Safety implications of transferring the oral contraceptive from prescription-only to over-the-counter status.

The idea of making oral contraceptives available without prescription has a long history, and has been recently revived in the US and the UK. High dose oral contraceptives have generally been replaced by low dose formulations and, subsequently, most cardiovascular risks have been reduced and a protection against ovarian and uterine cancers has been consistently demonstrated. Oral contraceptive compliance, however, continues to be a problem, but there is no reason to assume that wise practice would be any more or less if oral contraceptives were available over-the-counter (OTC). Some countries

Breast-cancer risk and oral contraceptive use in Slovenian women aged 25 to 54.

Results of a previous case-control study in Slovenia showed a significantly elevated risk of breast cancer for ever-OC users aged 25 to 54 years. A further study was conducted in 1988-1990 in the whole of Slovenia, employing more rigorous epidemiological methodology. Cases were 624 women with breast cancer, aged 25 to 54 years, diagnosed at the Institute of Oncology in Ljubljana and other Slovenian hospitals. Controls were 624 women identified through the Population Registry, randomly selected and matched with cases by date of birth and commune of residence. Data were collected by personal int

Oral contraceptives, menopausal estrogens, and the risk of breast cancer: a case-control study in Greece.

In a hospital-based case-control study in Athens, we examined the association between the use of oral contraceptives and menopausal estrogens and the risk of breast cancer. Eight hundred and twenty patients with confirmed breast cancer were compared with 795 orthopedic patient controls and 753 healthy visitor controls, matched to the cases by age and interviewer. The data were modeled through logistic regression, controlling for demographic and reproductive variables. Odds ratio patterns were similar for the 2 control series, which were therefore combined to increase precision of the estimates

Effect of low-dose oral triphasic contraceptives on blood viscosity, coagulation and lipid metabolism.

The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between hemorheological profile, i.e. blood viscosity, and other risk factors for cardiovascular and thrombotic diseases in women taking oral contraceptives and if blood viscosity may be considered a marker of cardiovascular risk in OC users. Plasma levels of coagulation parameters, serum lipids, blood viscosity and RBC deformability were determined in a group of 10 women taking OC vs. 10 controls. The blood parameters were evaluated before OC use and thereafter at 3 and 6 months. A significant change in the partial thromboplastin time

Defects in carbohydrate metabolism in oral contraceptive users without apparent metabolic risk factors.

We performed oral glucose tolerance tests and frequently sampled iv glucose tolerance tests in a cross-sectional sample of women taking monophasic norgestrel containing oral contraceptives (OC). The goal of the study was to quantify the individual factors that determine glucose tolerance to assess responsibility for the reduced glucose tolerance associated with the use of OCs. Subjects were selected using stringent criteria to exclude confounding effects of ethnicity, adiposity, or conditions that may predispose subjects to metabolic disorders. Users of the low dose OC (Lo/Ovral and Nordette)
